Dear people,

can anyone help me on the history or information on what the Furqan is? I knows the translation is "the criterion" (between right and wrong) but i was wondering if any of you could help interm of what is meant by this?

In the Quran it has been sent down for us or revealed to us. It is the Quran? because in some translations it seems it is mentioned as somethign else. Is it our knowledge? our consience?

Any opinions or help would be appreciated.

was salaam.

Furqan is often used in association with the Quran (Al Quran-Al Furqan). It is the 'standard' or rule book.

The word criterion is defined as a ' law or rule book by which a correct judgement can be made'

Thus, to my understanding the rule book itself is the Glorious Quran. It is synonymous.

Hello Ponderingstar

Al Furqan is usually translated into 'criteria' but lingusitically it actually means 'the divider' or 'The differentiator'. It is the differentiator between Al Haqq (truth) and Al Batil (evil).
It is the LAW part of a holybook. The Qur'an includes the Furqan in it.

You will notice that in verse 2.53 it says the book AND the Furqan.

002.053 وَإِذْ آتَيْنَا مُوسَى الْكِتَابَ وَالْفُرْقَانَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ
002.053 And remember We gave Moses the Scripture and the Criterion (Between right and wrong): There was a chance for you to be guided aright.

Notice it says the Scriptures AND the Criterion meaning they are two different things.
It is what in Judiasm is called the Ten Commandments (only mentioned as 9 in the Qur'an).

You will notice that it is never mentioned with the Injeel because there was no Law sent with Jesus. Only Mohamed (saaws) and Moses.

Actually the Distinguisher might be a better translation.
