:salams

I was just checking that website and then suddenly this question came to my mind. That is,

I assume that it is preferable to do dua's in its original form that is in arabic. But do they have the same effects if we do these dua's in another language instead of arabic ?

yes- i think that it is better to do the duas in arabic- but remember that Allah created languages and understands them all- so if i were you- what i do anyways is read the dua in arabic and then read it in english making the intention that it is sincere- and i think i can best do that by reading it in english- so do the same. its like prayer- you have to do it in arabic, but at the same time you should be in your head making a conscious effort as to what each verse/saying you r uttering means- so you arent just blindly going through it.
inshallah i will try to find a something of more substance for you than my mere opinion

Dua Before Studying

“Allahumma infa’nii bimaa ‘allamtanii wa’allimnii maa yanfa’uunii. Allahumma inii as’aluka fahmal-nabiyyen wa hifzal mursaleen al-muqarrabeen. Allahumma ijal leesanee ‘aiman bi dhikrika wa qalbi bi khashyatika. Innaka ‘ala ma-tasha’u qadeer wa anta hasbun-allahu wa na’mal wakeel.”

“Oh Allah! Make useful for me what you have taught me and teach me knowledge that will be useful to me. Oh Allah! I ask you for the understanding of the prophets and the memory of the messengers, and those nearest to you. Oh Allah! Make my tongue full of your remembrance and my heart with consciousness of you. Oh Allah! You do whatever you wish, and you are my availer and protector and best of aid.”

Dua After Studying

“Oh Allah! I entrust you with what I have read and I have studied. Oh Allah! Bring it back to me when I am in need of it. Oh Allah! You do whatever you wish, you are my availer and protector and the best of aid.”

Dua While Studying Something Difficult

“Allahumma la sahla illama ja-‘altahu sahla anta taj ‘alu al hazana eza ma shi’ta sahal.”

“Blessings of god be upon Muhammad and his progeny. O god, I ask you, the one who mentions goodness and actualizes it and commands it, remind me of that which the shaytan makes me forget.”

This shia-sunni thing is always very confusing to me and I wish there were never these kinda divisions in islam :(

I understand that there are some differences between shias and sunnis regarding beliefs and acts. But how come duas be such different ? Is it the words in the duas or what ? Arn't duas taken from the Quran ? Are the differences in shia-sunni dua's that significant ?

in islam some duas are from the quran some are from the prophet. the shia believe that certain members of the prophet's family recieved their knowledge through him and narrated hadith and duas from him. you will see many long duas that the shia have which the sunni usually dont know about. the shia get them from the ahlulbayt. an example is this book from the great grandson of the prophet http://www.duas.org/sajjadiya/sajjadiya.htm its not considered bidah casue in the opinion of the shia the duas come form the prophet. the sunni scholars are unlikely to accept duas that are not in their own books.
