What on Earth...?
----------------------------------------

Children's drawings of the Earth as flat, or hollow with people inside, have led some psychologists to believe children develop naive, but coherent, mental models of what the planet is like based on their own observations. Such accounts predict that teaching science to children will be difficult because these entrenched beliefs must be overcome first.

But there are problems with interpreting children's drawings. They might draw a flat Earth because it's easier, for example. So Gavin Nobes and colleagues at the University of East London used a different technique.
They asked 62 children, aged from 5 to 10, to put 16 cartoon-style pictures of the Earth in order of how much they looked like the Earth. The pictures varied systematically along three dimensions - the Earth's shape, the location of people, and the location of the sky.

All the children consistently ranked the spherical depiction of the Earth as most realistic. Two thirds of the 7 to 10 year-olds also showed a clear preference for pictures showing people and the sky all around the Earth. The 5 to 6 year-olds showed no consistent preference for the location of the sky and/or people. None of the children ranked the pictures in a way consistent with an alternative, naive mental model of the Earth (as flat, with people and the sky only on top, for example).

"These findings indicate that even young children have some knowledge of the scientific view of the Earth", the authors concluded, adding: "The only theory that children acquire is the scientific theory that culture communicates, presumably through linguistic and visual means by school, parents and the media".

if i have children..i am going to try my best to get them intrested in astronomy..because i know what studying asrtronomy is like, and it is a huge experiense, it can even increase your faith in Allah, when you look and marvel at his creation, and you thank him that you are able to learn about it, that is a form of worship aswell praiseing Allah for all the wodnerful creations that are in existance

i believe astronomy is prolly the closest you can get to studying about the creation without actualy studying religion in general.

this is part of the reason i love the Qur'an and islam, becasue in islam..there is nothing that you have to follow blindly

there is nothing Allah says in the Qur'an that has no phsyical proof here on earth...though we have not discovered everyhting, i do believe every single sentence, in the qur'an canand will be proven on this earth

you can also test yourself

if you read a line in qur'an..and it disagrees with what is in relaity..in this life...then you knwo you ahve misinterperted it wrong, and you should look throughly at the very and study it untill it is clear

i think it is now safe for me to say that i have spent about 5/6th of my life in my room, thinking about stuff

and i really think true muslims will agree on me with what i have jsut said

and agree in a sence of KNOWING what i said is true...and not agrreeeing becasue you want to priase Allah or becasue it sounds good

i believe if people cangrasp the fact that there are proofs..in this dunyia..about everything, then they will better understand the Qur'an..and not have to turn to the scholars with every single question about the Qur'an

i ask that all our borthers and sister..at LEAST take an intrest in a big science like astronomy, even if it is jsut read an astronomy magazine..or heck..even biology, or zooology

Allah has given us knowlage and proof of his every word, we only have to find it for ourselves, please people..start thinking for yourself...

your dealing with wether or not you will burn in hell for eternity...do you wish to put all that in the hands of soemone else?

look for knwolage yourself..not what others think...this is partly why i dohn't liek 'scholars'

sorry for going off topic again

well said crono, theres alot of stuff to learn from the quran and if one spends every night reading a portion of it, it helps their deen alot.

astronomy/space is very interesting and it would be amazing if one day we could travel to other planets as we now travel to other countries.

but I dont think itll happen in our lifetimes.

they are already sending humans to mars...it will take 3 years to get there though..so it is a long jorney...but i don't doubt they will learn more about black holes and teleportation soon and we will be able to harness that power

i highly doubt allah made the universe for us to NOT explore it...and sence he did make it..there is a reasonable way to get about the universe...we only have yet to discover it

Oooooooo! Yes... astronomy is a fascinating subject.
Stars.... :inlove:... the moon... SubhanAllah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of the earth being a sphere, I was at Toys 'r' us (or whatever the store is called) the other day... saw this cool ermm... puzzle thingie. It was the earth... only all in puzzle form and a sphere. I thought it was cool, since you not only get to assemble it, but you get a bit of a know how on what countries exist out there. Interesting! Something that I would gift to a child for sure. :)

*Ahem* Something I would get for myself even. :D

Anyways... Americans need more of those kinda toys, being in the well far too long, seriously.

Hmmm.... speaking of which... *thinking*... business idea comes to mind.
*bling bling kaching!* :D

gastronomy is even better... haha.

seriously, there would be without a doubt that all followers will (or at least try)respect and adhere to their chosen/given religion. and i have no doubt that followers in same faith will unit together, eventually.

but what about the differences. will there ever be a possible to unit the differences?
