Assalaamu Alaikum,

OK, so after months of deliberation and serious thought and undecisiveness.. I have come to conclusion that it would be better to buy parts and build a computer :nervous: than to buy one.

I've spoken to the kind and generous Pheonix CG, who offered to help me and gave me this list of what I'd need to buy.

The black bits are what Pheonix has said I need.. and the Red bits is my spec of what I'd like.. the "err.." ones, mean I don't have a clue about the thing so need :help:

Now, if Athlon ends up being too expensive.. then If someone can find me a spec with P4 that'd be good too.

Ideally my budget is anything less than £700 ..the more under £700 it is the happier I am.. I'd love to be able to do this within the £500-£600 price range.. £650 is pushing me..

So the challenge is to find me all that at the cheapest ..PLEASE, help me!

Then I can buy it and hopefully fumble my way around building it..

Post your findings here so I can compare and purchase the cheapest.. help help help..

May Allah(swt) reward you all for your input :D ..and for helping a sister in need.

Wa alaikum as salaam,
CW

Pheonix my bro :)

Can we do this out here so I can get more feedback and input too?.. inshaAllah.. I'm hoping people can find all the bits online, and gimme links and prices for all the bits I need.. then I can pick the cheapest and best and buy it.. and THEN inshaAllah.. somehow build it.

Thats the plan anyway

Actually sis, I would advice you get a ready made from Dell or HP.

Computer nowdays are flimsey things. I once decided to build my own computer, I ordered the parts from e-buyer.com. Some of the parts didnt even work like harddisk and power supply unit, I had to return them and get different ones, the whole process took ages to assemble. unless you are a hardware expert I wouldnt recommend sis.

if you buy a ready made comp, you get the recovery CD with it, anytime your computer messes up, you just put the CD in and your comp is restored within minutes.

not the case with home-made computers..they have no on-site warranty and they always mess up a week before your coursework deadline.

Thats why I am saying buy one from Evesham, pick and choose a package you like.

Evesham are pretty good for customer service.

But Dell is evil and expensive.. I was going to buy Dell.. but there aren't any good deals around yet and I've gone off Dell.

Just checked out bro Baby Paws link.. the systems look good, but again it's expensive.. maybe I'm too fussy :(

And I'm getting mixed messages.. when I say "I'm buying off Dell" people say, Dell is just a name, they're expensive, they're not that good.. build your own its better etc etc.. and then when I go that way I get the opposite feedback.. LOL

And I'm undecisive at the best of times.. this is just plain confusing!

Unless I find the miracle deal from heaven.. I'm building it! (If I can get help picking the bits and figuring out what I need to do :embar: )

Evesham is good, check out their catalogue more thoroughly and see if they have anything you like.

We got ours from there over 3 years ago, after being given a raw deal via MESH Computers.

Once we got our refund we went with Evesham, good PC, still using it, never had any problems except the initial teething problems with drivers and wot not.

However, I appear to recall they was quite good with the customer services support.

why pay few hundred pound more for brand name?

its better to buy seperate parts, you can choose the best and they will have guarantee.

But will look through Evesham again later tonight inshaAllah.

I didnt add keyboard and mouse, i added fast ram , graphics card that is good it can run any game on the market but its not the best, its the monitor that shoots the price up... and aswell tfts do not have refresh rates, so it won't give u a headache. I want a 2 19" tfts cas my 22" crt is starting to get me paranoid about radiation. the case is a nice one, my sis has it, and has another case fan. I thought black would be cool. But you get the idea... (case has powersupply already) My sis has that case and its good imo

Oh u wanted black lol :D well thats all suited, ps all the black crt's where a bit tuty

Keyboard:

Im a lover for logitech:

crts own tft.

tft = expensive, resolution not as high as crt, blurring in games and chance of pixel dieing.

crts are good yes, but if u do not want brain cancer then hmm or head aches, at games they are clearly better but i dont think CW is like racing in making softwares in c++...lol.

True, we haven't ahd any dead pixels in our tft's so far :) but it can happen due to over heating i would think...and think about space aswell. its personal preference down to cw really.

that should be good enough, you may want a slightly more powerful PSU and you have to add a case but the rest of the spec is fine.

i do really knwo what everyones knowlage abotu compuetrs is...but remebr..when buying thing that are cheap..YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR..soem things..shoudln't be cheap, for instance...video,sound,andnetowkr can all be onborad the motehr borard, that willr educe the price by alot...but that is for a very basic machine, if your a gamer...you want a good video card..that will run you 400$ dollars easly, sound card is never a big deal, network card sare uber cheap

CPU's..good ones, run abour $250ish dollars last time i checked, and depending on what you get..you will need a power supply that can power all the compents.

you need fans..lots of fans, the faster the cpu..the better the fan i always said..fans are cheap..usely between 3-5 dollars

ram..come on..a gig of ram?, wth do you need a whole gig for..i am a gamer..and i do fine on 192mb of ram..you really don't need a gig

harddrive...20gig..easly 20$

speakers...10 dolalrs..radioshak

mouse keyborad...i perosnaly have a generalk electric mouse form 'Big Lots!' that ahs alsted a yera or so, and i have an old WORKING fugly keyborad with buttons missing and what not..but it does jsut fine

i also got a ps2-to-pc adapter so i can use ps2 contorllers for pc games :P

monitor?...those do become pretty expensive...if your goignt ow atch dvds..get plasma..if ntp...get an old crt...15-17 inch shoudl be good

Hi,

<O:p

I built my own PC ‘bout 10 months. I was committed to buildin’ it due to 2 reasons, I had always wanted to build my own PC (and the learnin’ curve involved) and secondly I had a PC that I was using on daily basis.

<O:p

Here’s my 2 cents if you want to build your own PC:
<O:p

1: When buying parts from the Net, ensure you know the websites returns policy and be prepared to haggle in order to get returns order no. and replacement parts. You may also be expected to return the parts at your own expense in terms of P&P.
<O:p

2: When you buy from the internet be aware of the cost of delivery. Some companies, charge for delivery by weight, and so if u buy a tower, that can weigh a few kg, that could bump the price up and the deal won’t look a bargain after all.
<O:p

3. Compatibility: You need to do background research to ensure the parts you buy are compatible with each other. You don’t want a motherboard with an ‘A-Socket’ designed for P4 processor and heatsink (fan) when you’ve ordered an Athlon XP processor.
<O:p

Likewise, with RAM, you want to know what sticks your MB (motherboard) can contain (the number of slots it has for RAM). Mine has 3 slots, but I’m usin’ 2 * 512MB PC2700 333Mhz sticks.
<O:p

The MB has to be compatible with the tower… like ATX case for <ST1:place <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City>ATX</st1:City> <st1:State>MB</st1:State></ST1:p. Also bear in mind some towers don't come with PSU (Power Supply Unit). If not, then you'll have to invest in one. There's some good PSU's out there.
<O:p

4. You need lots and lots of patience. If you encounter probs, and can’t troubleshoot it instantly, then leave it, go to sleep, forget ‘bout it. Get up the next morn’, you’ll have fresh ideas and the chances you’ll find the solution increase. Its also advisable to have inet access this time too, so you can ask for assistance.
<O:p</O:p

5. If your m/c is runnin’ fine, then you need to have the patience and be dedicated to troubleshoot probs at that time too, and not just durin’ the build. Havin’ a warranty for the parts helps.
<O:p</O:p

6. Windows XP SP2 OS, Spyware detection, prevention (SpySweeper, Spyware Blaster, Dr. Spyware, Search & Destroy, Ad-aware, CounterSpy, MS Anti-Spyware), anti-viral software (Panda Platinum Internet Security 2005), firewall software is a must. You would have to pay for all that, it could set you back a couple of hundred pounds at least, unless you find a loophole in the vendors terms of use.

However, when you’re system is flyin’ as smooth as a Rolls Royce, well protected and shielded copin’ immaculately with the demands of your applications, you can breathe a sigh of relief and congratulate yourself for a sense of accomplishment your effort warrants.

Hopefully this doesn't add to your confusion :D

Hi Chained,

I am a computer technician. I usually go into a computer shop, pick all of the parts and have them put it togather, put the OS, drivers, burn it in, and deliver it (a local shop will do all that for ~$50-100. It has saved me countless hours of monkeying under the hood (90% of the time everything goes togather just fine).

As for parts, it really depends on what you want the system to be capable of.

If you are using it for animations, video, games, graphics, you want the best video card your money can buy. Such as a Radeon or GForce with at least 128MB of video ram.

If you are playing a lot of music, games, etc, you want a good sound card. I would recommend the Creative Labs Audigy. If you don't care about sound, use the on board sound card.

If you choose to go AMD processors, the Asus A7V8X (this one has been around a while), unless you want to go 64 bits. If you choose Pentium, I would go for an Intel motherboard (since they are made by the same company, some would debate this selection).

Make sure that you aren't buying an MB with on-board graphics capability, and that it has an AGP X4 slot or better, IF YOU INTEND TO UPGRADE YOUR VIDEO CARD.

Mice and keyboards, pick something comfortable, since you will be using it all the time. I use a Microsoft Intellipoint with a scrolling wheel.

Monitor. Since this is your window to the computer, don't skimp. If you are playing high speed, high graphic games, go with an analog CRT (this is recommended for FPS cames like Half Life, etc.). If you are doing desktop application, are pushing for desk space, and don't particularly care about things like 'frame rates over 60FPS) get a 17" LCD. The price mark is about 17", you might be able to find a deal on a 19" for ~$350 if you are lucky and frugal. The LCD generates less heat, cost you less energy, and doesn't spew EMR (electro magnetic radiation) like CRT's do.

GET 512MB RAM or better. 256 is not suffecient for Windows XP to run smoothly.

Hard drive, the key to picking the best hard drive.
#1- RPMS, the faster the RPM's, the better the data transfer rate will be, in general.
#2- Seek time <10ms. 7ms is about the fastest seek time. This is the time it takes to transverse the drive and pick up each file.

Put on Windows XP, Professional is just a bit better and not much more expensive.

Make sure you have Anti-Virus, Anti Spyware.

Windows comes with a firewall, but you have to update it to SP2. Microsoft has an Anti-Spyware application that is currently free.

if you feel liek destriyng a pegood pc..get windows xp..if you want a good pc that will actualy RUN...get win2k

xp is more suseptable to viruses and spyware becasue wqith windows XP..THERE IS NO HUMAN INTERVENTION..in it's built in virus scanner and spyware progs and all that...the problem with winxp is...it does everyhting wether you tell it to or not..anbd wether you know it or not

is not os consequence that my mother has to scanner her computer for ill things EVERYDAY..and she is on xp...

i am on win2k..and i don't even have a scanner for anyhting any more..why?..because i simply don't get viruses or anyhting..why?..becasue my computer doesn't do ANYTHING without asking me first

that, plus i have the knolwgae to be able to tell what programs are BS..and what are authentic

I wish MS provided a tool that would truly HARDEN XP PRO against stupid stuff like trojans and spyware, as well as meddling or fumbly fingers in explorer (deleting key files and folders and such).

However, with a good virus scanner, and MS anti spyware, XP performs better than Win2k (particularly with multi-media or games). If you are just doing desktop work, including graphics and in particular Autocad, Win2k is better. In my opinion.

xp has no built in virus scanner or anti spyware. you can make it run just like 2k and look like 2k if you know how to. (bit of difference of course but it can be customised alot).

the most popular os will always be the most prone to attacks.

if linux was popular in the home as XP it would have just as much viruses tbh.

Well yes, it's that time of the month again where CW hopelessly *thinks* about buying a computer again.

it don't look at that considering the budget you mentioned

first of all its a cdrw/dvd rom combo drive, which you'd rather want a dvd writer

your graphics card is on board(i think), didn't you not want that?

:crying: are you mocking me?

I'm very sensitive right now.. Not having a good time.

My mum was trying to make a doctors appointment in the morning.. but I was ~ahem~ logged on to the internet and again hogging the phoneline..

My dad flipped.. big time!

The annoying thing is, whenever this happens, its at a time when I've just logged on and haven't even been online for a long time.. yet they need to use the phone at the exact same time, or try to call the house at the exact same time and so it looks like I'm always on during the day from home..

But I'm NOT.. I'm always on from work (like now).. or at night when everyone's asleep.. But I sometimes pop on when I'm at home during the day, and they always manage to catch me online at those times..

Oh who am I kidding.. I'm always on ummah and I'm in trouble.

My dad is REALLY not happy. :nervous:

aww, oopsie, you need to get broadband really fast, i'm sure its almost the same price as what you paying now anyway. check telewest/blueyonder prices.

Spec looks alright, but I'm sure the techie bro's on here will convince you building it yourself again :p

inshaAllah they'll be fine when you get back:)

BTW for everyone else, I saw broadband for bt line people in the metro at 9.99 for 512 unlimited, arrghhh, i just started one for 17.99 and thought I got a good deal.

My dad said he wants me to take the computer out of my room and put it in the front room when I get back from work, lol.

He thinks I can carry that thing on my own?! Yeh like that's gonna happen.

But I will remove the extension for the phoneline if he asks why I haven't done anything about the computer. ..so that way I can't access internet from home.. so no more CW for a while maybe :(

I need to get married.

simmy, it might be capped ;) thats why the cheap price, but depends on what you use the net for...

And cw, i would definately put mroe ram, its a must, i would compromise the hard drive space for more ram, atlaest 512mb ddr in my opinion. so u want a desktop for sure then...? alrity then, i gotta go somewhere so i'll reply properly later lol inshaAllah

i think your first priority is not getting in there way so any speed of connection will do, i think the cheapest on telewest is 15 for 256, which is still 5 times faster.

InshaAllah everything will be fine when you get home :)

Bismiallah Ir-rahman Ir-rahim

My honest suggestion is as follows:

Processor: Intel Pentium 2.8 GHz or 3.0 GHz with 1 MB L2 Cache; 800 MHz Bus

Motherboard: Intel D865GBFNL with Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics and Audio on board with Intel Network Interface card.

Memory: 1.0 GB atleast (Kingston 400 MHz Bus DDR)

Floppy Drive: 1.44MB (3.5") Floppy drive (Sony/Panasonic)

Hard Drive: 80.0/120.0/160.0 GB of Seagate SATA Hard drive

DVD/CD-R/RW: Sony Combo

Casing/Chasis: What ever brand but will support Intet Hperthread Heat sink standards.

Monitor: Can buy 15"/17" TFT but they are expensive, if buy CRT, then buy 19"/21" Philips/Viewsonic.

Keyboard: Go for logitech or Microsoft

Mouse: Optical

for Internet, if you are using Broadband or DSL, its upto your service provider, but i suggest buy from D-Link or US Robbotics.

WebCam: Creative or Logitech

UPS: Go for APC

These are mine fair suggestions, i hope its all fit in yours budget.

Thanks

no problem :)
yeh ebuyer is cheapest :)

What u need is:

RAM 1G
CPU AMD Athlon 64
MOTHERBOARD errr..
GRAPHICS CARD umm, I hear GeForce is good? or Radeon(is that what its called)?
TOWER/CASE nice and black
MONITOR 17" or 19" TFT please
MOUSE optical is a must.. but I would love a cordless mouse+keyboard, but don't want to spend too much..
KEYBOARD should look nice and match with everything
NETWORK CARD (UNLESS IN BUILT ON MOBO) err..
SPEAKERS well, I dunno, just speakers that match with everything I guess
power supple err..
CPU FAN BIG err..
Case fan (to keep it all cool) err again..
Hard drive (sata is faster) 140 or 160 would be nice :D
DVD RW (i use that alot now for back ups) just anything thats good
CD RW (if u want two dvd rw's normally rw can copy cd's too, but i prefer having more drives cas im lazy) don't really want one if DVD RW does the job and I have a big HD
cables for inside the box, if there oem purchases. err..
i'd like a £3 floppy off ebuyer too maybe :p

windows cd unless u got ur own :P we all get em from pakistan :P lol

Alrite lets get this done before, i start messing around with the server n network...

Okay, So to choose the system, for obviously reasoning i would choose an amd 64, this is because when 64bit applications come out, your computer will be able to use them, so your system will last alot longer then a pentium 4 with ht, currently 32 bit.

Now I would say just use one supplier, which i would use, would be ebuyer or aria. Ebuyer is the cheapest i have so far found, sometimes they may send a faulty item, if so just use the rma. But it should be fine, i havent had a problem with them for a long time.

First we will choose the cpu and motherboard

So the cpu I have chosen for this is the 3200 amd xp 64bit, with socket 754, this means you will need a socket 754 motherboard...it is retail so it comes with a cpu fan :)
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=6773983976&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=62704

Now for the motherboard:
I have an MSI motherboard and it supports overclocking, so if you later on want to speed up your computer, you can use the bios to make ur cpu fsb faster, and increasing the total GHz of your CPU. MSI is cheaper then the other boards, and bundle more into it. This has 2 firewire, and 8 usb's which is quite alot...and its a nice colour :p http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=6774172412&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=52178

So far it has come up to 126ish, includign vat and delivery

Now I would say to add the RAM and the GRAPHICS CARD:

RAM:

For your system as you are a itno programming i assume, you won't require vasts amounts of ram, as i doubt you will play games at maximum settings, but i will reccomend 512mb ddr ram minimum, so i'd sayjust go for the 512mb, 1gb is minimum if you require to use it for graphics intensive use...As the motherboard supports 3200 ram, i reccomend going for the kingston ram, they are a nice brand and are cheap :)
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=6774362198&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=49294

Graphics Card:

Like earlier mentioned, you won't be playing intense games, So i would reccomend, personally nvidia based card, this is because i personally prefer it as it is fully compatible with maya, whilst ATI have some problems. People will argue which card is better, but in the end it's not going to be used for games, although the card i will reccomend can probably handle most of the things you throw at it.
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=6774571999&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=88244
That is the nvidia 5500, my friend has it and he does play alot of games that require good graphics cards so it can handle nething u at the moment. it has 256mb ram also, you can opt for less, but this is easily changable.

The current Price is now: 258.59

Next I will say is to choose the hard drive, floppy and cd/dvd.

Hard drive:
As your motherboard supports SATA i reccomend this, it is alot faster then normal ata 133, I would say around 120gb would be nice, this is easily upgradable in the future, Oh yes i forgot to mention your motherboard supports 3gb ram so u can add more ram also. :). So yeh, the hard drive, meh go for 160gb, we can decrease it if the price is too high:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=6774738278&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=57070
I chose maxtor, because i have a maxtor and we also have a western digital and the maxtor is actually better, the western digital had some problems with it.

Floppy will be anyold one, im assuming black as you would probly want a nice slick system:

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=6774864565&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=62047

Personally i no longer use floppy, but thats cheap.

Next up is the DVD/CD or whatever you want:
Personally i would say get a dvdrw that can burn cd's also and read dvds, as you may want to back up your work lateron onto a large medium, such as a dvd disc, they have fallen in price lately also, aswell you now get softwares on dvd so u probly want to be able to read those, and not get stuck in the old times.
I chose this black nec one:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=83151

Does all you need and its dual layer :D and its cheap.

So far the total is : 364ish

Next up is the case :D
So i would say get a case which is black obviously :p with a power supply already...I reccomend this case because it is, made by antec, it will be very cool and it doesnt need screws, so you it will be easier when you building it...slightly :p
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=6775044700&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=72294
it comes with 350wattpsu so its suffiecient. It also has fans inbuilt so your system will run nice and cool :).

Price Sofar is 409.39

Now we shall go shopping for the monitor :D
Well as you are a mod, you deserve a good sharp screen so I'll take my time on checking which ones are a good one :). 17" will be suffiecient? as you posted in the previous build. here is a black one: the resolution is sufficient @ 1280 max http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=6775168564&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=82760

The reviews say it is sharp image quality :) tehre are others for more, but tell me what you think about that one, we will look at the budget inshaAllah.

So far it is 570, with only a few more items to go

We will now look at keyboard mouse, and speakers

The keyboard and mouse i recommend is logitech, i have logitech mouse and its amazing, and it will be nice in black, i dont know if you want wired or wireless tho, but the dell one looks wired...
I chose a wireless bundle logitech:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=6775370797&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=80862

The only problem is batteries, in keyboard they last a very long time, in mouse maybe a month or so usage...but rechargables batteries will solve that.

And speakers:
I'm assuming ur not a headbanger or some person that puts on things really loud :p so a pair of normal speakers would do...black again to suit the nice finish...i saw the sbs260's with the dell they are a bit ugly, so go for something a bit more stylish...me being a logitech fan, i have logitech 560's which are very very good quality, and they look nicer then the creatives i thought these flat panels are nice, and they will go loud enough. http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=6775546620&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=74746

So i believe that sums it up :) the total is now:

617.22 with delivery and look at all the additions we put in, alot faster system, more stylish, wireless keyboard and mouse...a cool system, better graphics card by waaaaaaaaay far, lol that one is inbuilt too, oh yeh fyi inbuilt gpus such as intel often have problems with linux, so another good reason for a proper gpu. So thats the price, oh yes and dvd rw lol...which the dell lacks also. Windows won't be a problem ;) or other applications.

Grand total in vat and delivery: 617.22

So there you have it, a better system for less...and if you want you can downgrade some of the components to lower the price even more :). I'll show images in the next post of the system...and how to build it later on also.

Salaam 4 now
