In the Name Of God, the Most Gracious, the Dispenser of Grace.

Sura Al-Maun - 107

Have you ever considered the kind of man who inserts a lie into all moral law? Listen, it is this kind of man who throws the orphans away, and feels no need to feed the hungry. And many woes will come to those who pray, yet their hearts are far from their prayers. They are the ones who only want to be seen praying so that they can be praised for it. And yet, they deny all assistance to their fellow man.

This Surah speaks of the importance of charity. It also speaks, of what I believe to be, a wrongful method of practicing prayer. It warns us to be mindful of our prayers, and keep them close to our heart, as opposed to performing our prayers out of obligation only to our religion.

I believe we must always be mindful of Allah, especially at prayer time. The tolls of our lives can lead us easily to distraction, and I believe this Surah is designed to make us aware of how easily we can fall into a quagmire of repetitious prayer without putting our hearts into those prayers.

Comments anyone?

Well the Surah also tells me that if we fall victom to ourselves, and not hold Allah close to our hearts at prayer time, we will become insensitive towards our fellow man.

The act of prayer, if we keep Allah mindful during, is designed to bring us closer to Allah. If we stay close to Allah, then His perfect concept of "mercy" will be revealed to us continuously, and thus we will then use that perfect mercy upon our fellow man in charity.

Good honest prayer is essential, because if we step away from keeping Allah close to our hearts, then we also step away from keeping our fellow man close to our hearts in their time of need.

It all works together.

The Surah takes its name from the word Al-Ma'un (The Assistance) that occurs at the end of the last verse.

The focus of the Surah is to emphasize that it is a disbeliever in the Requital (verses 1-3) or religion itself, who maltreats the orphans and the needy.
Whereas a hypocrite is neither sincere in his prayers (verses 4-7) nor is he willing to do small kindness to others.
