re·pent
To feel remorse, contrition, or self-reproach for what one has done or failed to do; be contrite.
To feel such regret for past conduct as to change one's mind regarding it: repented of intemperate behavior.
To make a change for the better as a result of remorse or contrition for one's sins.
VS.
REPENT
To sorrow or be pained for sin, as a violation of God's holy law, a dishonor to His character and government, and the foulest ingratitude to a Being of infinite benevolence

I do not recall ever seeing a thread on this specific topic here @ Ummah, so I would like to begin one.
The goal of every believer in "One True God" is to live according to the outline given by the Creator
regarding how best to live our lives. Since there have been relatively few true human's who embodied the persona or character of God while alive, it is up to each lowly-born individual to make their way up the ladder as best they can, improving themselves along the way.
I Believe an accurate example of this would be :
A beautiful, fragile creation of blown glass or clay which is placed upon a shelf and admired for it's pure beauty.
Raw minerals or metals, being heated and tested by a roaring fire, gaining strength with each heating and cooling.
How does the Quran and Islam today deal with Repentance ?

Many Muslims want to seek forgiveness and cherish the thought of being purified, but do not know how to embark on this path. For instance they do not know what words to use or what to seek forgiveness for; or they have forgotten about many sins they have committed or perhaps deem many of them trivial and insignificant; or they simply think there is no need to seek forgiveness. But the mercy of Allaah is so greatly infinite and His position so grand, that rather than immediately punishing us, He has granted us a grace period in which to seek forgiveness for our sins. And as if that were not enough, Allaah then gave us the means by which to wipe away our sins and their negative effects. These are called supplications of forgiveness (istighfaratاستغفارات). They are found in the Glorious Qur’aan at many places. This is yet another evidence that one does not need “Jesus” to be saved, As Muslim, one can save himself directly being his or her own savior. I have seen non-Muslims and Muslims always using off target Ayaat from the Glorious Qur’aan to argue about the salvation and/or mercy in Islaam, while they are clueless about the obvious ones, for example:
Surah Az-Zumar 53-54
Say: "O ‘Ibâdî (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allâh: verily, Allâh forgives all sins. Truly He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. {1} (http://www.islam-is-the-only-solution.com/My%20Documents/Program%20FilesHarfHoly%20QuranDATAHQTemp%22%20l)
{1} (V.39:53) A) Also See (V.9:121). B) (V.22:27). C) & (V.25:70). "And turn in repentance and in obedience with true Faith (Islâmic Monotheism) to your Lord and submit to Him (in Islâm) before the torment comes upon you, (and) then you will not be helped.
Readers can find many best duas and/or istighfaratاستغفاراتfor forgiveness, which save from the Hellfire in Glorious Qur’aan in the following Ayaat (beside at many other places):
2:201; 2:250; 2:286; 3:8; 3:147; 3:192; 3:193; 3:194; 7:23; 7:47; 7:89; 7:126; 10:85; 10:86; 14:38; 18:10; 25:74; 40:7; 40:8; 44:12; 59:10; 60:4 and 66:8. Beside these I have also cited following prayers (fromحسن البصرى رحمة الله عليه) for forgiveness that saves from Hellfire, which are followed by their transliteration.
1. O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin that my body, empowered by the good health that You had granted, was able to commit; every sin that came within the reaches of my power only due to the grace of Your bounties; every sin to which my hand, nourished by Your ample sustenance, extended. And while sinning, I hid myself behind Your veil from the people; and when fearing You, while engrossed in my sin, I relied on Your assurance of safety and forgiveness; and I took refuge in You, with Your clemency, not to smite me, and I depended on You, with Your noble countenance and pardon, to forgive me.
Allahumma inni astaghfiruka li kulli dhambin qawiya ‘alayhi badani bi ‘afiyatik(a), wa nalat-hu qudrati bi fadli ni’matik(a), wa ‘mbasatat ilayhi yadi bi si‘ati rizqik(a), wa ‘htajabtu ‘ani n-nasi bi sitrik)a), wa ttakaltu fihi ‘inda khawfi minka ‘ala amanik(a), wa wathiqtu min satwatika ‘alayya fihi bi hilmik(a), wa ‘awwaltu fihi ‘ala karami wajhika wa ‘afwik)a). Fa salli ya Rabbi wa sallim wa barik ‘ala Sayyidina Muhammad(in), wa ‘ala ali Sayyidina Muhammad(in), wa ghfirhu li ya Khayra ‘l-ghafirin(a).
2. O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin that invites me toward Your anger, or draws me near to Your displeasure, or makes me inclined to that which You have prohibited, or distances me from [the bliss and success] to which Your have invited me.
Allahumma inni astaghfiruka li kulli dhambin yad’u ila ghadabik(a), aw yudni min sakhatik(a), aw yamilu bi ila ma nahaytani ‘anh(u), aw yuba’iduni ‘amma da’awtani ilayhi(i)
3. O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin into which I, out of my deviance, lured one of Your creation; or which I, with my cunning, deceived him into doing; hence, teaching him such wicked deeds that he was previously unaware of, and making attractive to him those that he was aware of. Now, I am to meet You tomorrow, with my burden of sins along with the burdens of others’ sins.
Allahumma inni astaghfiruka li kulli dhambin aslamtu ilayhi ahadan min khalqika bi ghawayati, aw khada’tuhu bi hilati, fa ‘allamtuhu minhu ma jahil(a), wa zayyantu lahu ma qad ‘alim(a), wanlaqituka ghadam bi awzari wa awzarin ma’a awzari.
4. O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin in which I exhausted my limbs, by day and by night—all the while keeping myself hidden, out of shame form Your servants, with Your covering over me; and indeed, there is nothing to cover my sins except what You cover me with.
Allahumma inni astaghfiruka li kulli dhambin at’abtu fihi jawarihi fi layli wa nahari, wa qadi ‘statartu haya’an min ‘ibadika bi sitrik(a), wa la sitra illa ma satartani bih(i).
5. O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin for which I presented my repentance before You; and regarding which I stood before You swearing on oath in Your name and called Your friends from among Your servants to be my witnesses—that I would never return to disobeying You. But when Satan with his cunning tempted me to return to it; and Your forsaking me [due to Your anger over my impiety] causing me to [despairingly] waver toward it; and my lower self invited me to disobey you once more; I hid myself in shame form Your servants, but openly and daringly committed sins before You, though I knew full well that no covering nor any closed door could conceal me from You and no veil could hid me from Your sight. I still defied You by disobediently doing what You had prohibited to me; but [despite my iniquity], You did not remove Your covering from me, but rather treated me equal to Your pious servants, as though I had always been an obedient servant and swift to fulfill Your every command and fearful of Your warnings. I remained obscure in front of Your servants, and none besides You knew my secret. You did not single me out from Your servants with a mark of disgrace, but instead showered upon me blessings like theirs; and with this You distinguished me over them as though I were, in Your sight, of a status like theirs. All this was owing only of Your forbearance and abundant blessings—generous grace from You to me. For You then, O my Lord, belongs all praise. I ask from You, O Allah, just as You have covered my evil deeds in this world, that You do not humiliate me with them on the Day of Judgment. [Forgive my sins,] O Most Merciful of the merciful!
Allahumma inni astaghfiruka li kulli dhambin qaddamtu ilayka tawbati minh(u), wa wajahtuka bi qasami bik(a), wa ash-hattu ‘ala nafsi bi dhalika awliya’aka min ‘ibadika anni ghayru ‘a’idin ila ma’siyatik(a) , fa lamma qasadani ilayhi bi kaydihi ‘sh-shaytan(u), wa mala bi ilayhi ‘l-khudhlan(u), wa da’atni nafsi ila ‘l-‘isyan(i), istatartu haya’an min ‘ibadika jara’atan minni ‘alayk(a), wa ana a’lamu annahu la yukinnuni minka sitrun wa la bab(un), wa la yahjubu nazarak hijab(un), fa khalaftuka fi ‘l-ma’siyati ila ma nahaytani ‘anh(u), thumma ma kashafta ‘s-sitr(a), wa sawaytani bi awliya’ik(a), ka’anni la azalu laka muti’an, wa ila amrika musri’an, wa min wa’idika fazi’an, fa bavistu ‘ala ‘ibadik(a), wa la ya lamu sarirati ghayruk(a), fa lam tasimni bi ghayri simatihim, bal asbaghta ‘alayya mithla ni’matihim, thumma faddaltani bi dhalika ‘alayhim ka’anni ‘indaka fi darjatihim, wa ma dhaka illa li hilmika wa fadli ni’ matika fadlan minka ‘alayy(a). Fa laka ‘l-hamdu ya Mawlay(a). Fa as’aluka ya Allahu kama satartahu ‘alayya fi ‘d-dunya, alla tafda-hani bihi yawma ‘l-qiyamati, ya Arhama ‘r-rahimin(a).
6. O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin that will blacken my face on the day when the faces of Your friends will be whitened and the faces of Your enemies will be blackened—when Your enemies will turn, one against another, in reproach, and You will say, “Dispute not with each other in My presence, for I have already sent to you advanced warning” (al-Qur’aan 50:28).
Allahumma inni astaghfiruka li kulli dhambini yurithu sawada 'l-wajhi yawma tabyaddu wujuhu awliya’ika wa taswaddu wujuhu a’da’ik(a), idh aqbala ba’duhum ‘ala ba’din yatalawamun(a), fa taqul(u): la takhtasimu ladayya wa qad qaddamtu ilaykum bi ‘lwa’id(i).
7. O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin in doing which I concealed myself from Your servants in the light of day but openly and daringly opposed You by committing in the darkness of night. This I did despite knowing that secrets are open to You, and that the hidden is exposed to You, and that nothing can protect me from Your punishment, nor can anything—neither my wealth nor my children –avail me before You, except that I come to You with a sound heart.
Allahumma inni astaghfiruka li kulli dhambini ‘stakhfaytu bihi fi daw’I ‘n-nahari ‘ an ‘ibadik(a), wa baraztuka bihi fi zulmati ‘l-layli jara’atam minni alayk(a), ‘ala anni a’lamu anna s-sirra ‘indaka ‘alaniya(tun), wa anna ‘l-khafiyyata ‘indaka bariza(tun), wa annahu la yamna’uni minka mani(un), wa la yanfa’uni ‘indaka nafi’um mim malin wa banin(a), illa an atatytuka bi qalbin salim(in).
8. O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin to which fear of someone besides You drove me, and it [the fear] called me to earnestly entreat one of Your creation or inclined me to yearn for what others besides You possessed—so I preferred to obey them and disobey You in order to lay hand on what they had, though I was aware that I am in need of You and that I am never free and independent of Your support.
Allahumma inni astaghfiruka li kulli dhambini hamalani ‘alayhi ‘l-khawfu min ghayrik(a), wa da ani ila ‘t-tadarru’i li ahadin min khalqik(a), awi ‘stamalani ila ‘t-tama’i fima ‘inda ghayrik(a), fa athartu ta’atahu fi ma ‘siyatika ‘stijlaban lima fi yadayh(i), wa ana a’lamu bi hajati ilayka kama la ghina li ank(a).
9. O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin that Your pen recorded and Your knowledge encompassed—every one that I have committed and that I am to commit until the end of my life. I seek Your forgiveness for all my sins: the first and the last, the intentional and the unintentional, the few and the many, the minor and the major, the subtle and the noticeable, the past and the recent, the secret and the open and public—and all those I am to commit throughout my life.
Allahumma inni astaghfiruka li kulli dhambini jara bihi qalamuk(a), wa ahata bihi ‘lmuka fiyya wa’ alayya ila akhiri ‘umri, wa li jami’i dhunubi kulliha, awwaliha wa akhiriha, ‘amdiha wa khata’iha, qaliliha wa kathiriha, saghiriha wa kabiriha, daqiqiha wa jaliliha, qadimiha wa hadithiha, sirriha wa jahriha wa ‘alaniyatiha, wa lima ana mudhnibun fi jami’i ‘umri.
10. O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for every sin of mine. I ask You to forgive me all the injustices against Your servants that You have enumerated against me; for Your servants have against me many claims of violated rights and injustices to which I am held captive. O Allah, even if these evil deeds of mine are many in number, they are a paltry few in sight of Your forgiveness. O Allah, any male or female servant of Yours who has against me a claim of injustice, that I forcefully seized form him something of his land or wealth or honor or body—whether he was absent or present, or whether he or his representatives demanded from me compensation for it but neither was I able to return it to him nor did I seek to be pardoned for it—I ask that You, with Your benevolence, generosity, and abundant treasures, satisfy them on my behalf; and do not give them over me power to take away and decrease my good deeds. For indeed, You possess what can satisfy them on my behalf, and I do not. And do not make a way for their bad deeds to overcome my good deeds on the Day of Judgment.
Allahumma inni astaghfiruka li kulli dhambini li, wa as’aluka an taghfira li ma ahsayta ‘alayya min mazalimi ‘l-‘ibadi qibali, fa inna li ‘ibadika ‘alayya huquqan wa mamazalim wa ana biha murtahin(un). Allahumma wa in kanat kathiratan fa innaha fi jambi ‘afwika yasira(un). Allahumma ayyuma ‘abdin min ibadika aw amatim min ima’ika kanat lahu mazlimatun ‘indi, qad ghasabtuhu ‘alayha fi ardihi aw malihi aw ‘irdihi aw badanig(i). Aw ghaba aw hadara huwa aw khasmuhu yutalibuni biha wa lam astati’ an aruddaha ilayhi wa lam astahlilha minh(u), fa as’aluka bi karamika wa judika wa si’ati ma ‘inda(a), an turdiyahum ‘anni, wa la taj’al lahum ‘alayya shay’an munaqqisatam min hasanati, fa inna ‘indak ma yurdihim, wa laysa ‘indi ma yurdihim, wa la taj’al yawma ‘l-qiyamati li sayyi’atihim ‘ala hasanati sabilan.

I am curious about something in the above quote.
You include : (Islâmic Monotheism) & (in Islâm) embedded within the text of the Quran.
DID God put that inclusion in there or did you ?
You see, if I simply remove those two extra bits of information,
I too can say that I follow the same thought's.
Are you saying that (Islâmic Monotheism) pre-existed all other Religions?
Hello Stanley
I am not saying anything, it is you have you said that, after lifting the English transaltion off the context. This is what Qur'an says above, which you have ignored some how:
وَأَنِيبُوا إِلَى رَبِّكُمْ وَأَسْلِمُوا لَهُ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَكُمُ الْعَذَابُ ثُمَّ لَا تُنْصَرُونَ
Now please show me what is embeded, where it is embeded and how it is embded in the above verse?
Perhaps this amy help you with multiple transations:
54 وَأَنِيبُوا إِلَى رَبِّكُمْ وَأَسْلِمُوا لَهُ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِيَكُمُ الْعَذَابُ ثُمَّ لَا تُنصَرُونَ
Transliteration: 54 Waaneeboo ila rabbikum waaslimoo lahu min qabli an yatiyakumu alAAathabu thumma la tunsaroona
Yusuf Ali: 54 "Turn ye to our Lord (in repentance) and bow to His (Will), before the Penalty comes on you: after that ye shall not be helped.
Shakir: 54 And return to your Lord time after time and submit to Him before there comes to you the punishment, then you shall not be helped.
Pickthal: 54 Turn unto your Lord repentant, and surrender unto Him, before there come unto you the doom, when ye cannot be helped.
M. Khan: 54 "And turn in repentance and in obedience with true Faith (Islamic Monotheism) to your Lord and submit to Him, (in Islam), before the torment comes upon you, then you will not be helped.
You have to know the transaltion rules to understand many things that you read in form of tralsations. Perhaps, this may help you understand:

I am curious about something in the above quote.
You include : (Islâmic Monotheism) & (in Islâm) embedded within the text of the Quran.
Due to the limitation of English langauge that cannot translate Arabic verbs into English verbs, words have to be added to complete the thought into English.
وَأَنِيبُوا إِلَى رَبِّكُمْ وَأَسْلِمُوا لَهُ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِيَكُمُ الْعَذَابُ ثُمَّ لَا تُنصَرُونَ
Nevertheless, the translation that you have picked to further the dialogue is erronoeus. You need to show in the above Ayaah, where are the parenthesis anything embedded to that. Otherwise your argument is mute.
DID God put that inclusion in there or did you ?
You see, if I simply remove those two extra bits of information,
I too can say that I follow the same thought's.
No Allaah did not put inclusion in there, it is the word of man that you have used fallaciously and using that as pretext to Question the Qur'aan (the true revealed word of Allaah. Removing the parenthesis would make no difference, since it is most closest transaltion for lay person from a Muslim translator.
Are you saying that (Islâmic Monotheism) pre-existed all other Religions?
Message from the beggining (Adam{AS}) has always been the same till Muhammad (SAW), i.e. worship one and only God.
