sometimes u have to be strict. When i see back to my chilhood, i was beaten up by father on quite a few occassions, if i analyze it , i think that was good for me!
i also sometimes beat my kid (very lightly) but after that i kisses him almost 100 times, & purchase a lolly pop for him:D

Strict doesn't entail harming a child. You can be strict with words, you can even punish usuing different methods (time-out etc) but harming a child is far from disciplining.

A child is an innocent. If a child ventures near a hot cooker, you don't smack the child for being naughty, because the child doesn't KNOW they are doing a naughty thing!

Educating the child is the key...and I think some parents could do with classes on how to bring up children too.

This answer taken from this thread: http://www.ummah.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16429&highlight=discipline

Physical abuse of children is forbidden in Islam, and discipline should be softer especially for the first seven years of the child's life. However, strict discipline is allowed in few cases, such as to protect the child from danger, or when teaching him/her good behavior. But still, physical discipline shouldn't get to the extent where it leaves a scar or a bruise or even a red color on the child's skin. It's worth pinpointing here though, that smacking a child to teach him/her good behavior should be used as a last resort, if all other ways fail. In addition, the smack should never be a slap on the child's face.

ABSOLUTELY!

what do you acheive by hitting a small child who id too young to understand why he is being hit? - nothing (you may say that they won't do that thing again but mostly children do)

what do you acheive by hitting a kid who can understand why he is being hit? - just that he is doing wrong and that hitting him is the way to communicate that. it would be better to teach your child to REASON above all else. sometimes hitting a child makes them stubborn or resentful and they repeat the wrong they have done. By showing the child love and right and wrong you can discipline a child with your diapproval. (which is something even the nauhtiest or most difficult of chilren crave.)

i understand that some children seem like they rea impossible and only hittng them is the answer, but this is not recommended. it is always preferable to teach a child right and wrong through reasoning.

when people say "oh yes i was out of control and my fathers beating did me good", it means you were either taught to rationalise out of fera and can see that it ay have been a better route than have you doing the thing again. youcan look bakc on it and reason.

If hitting becomes habit that menas you are actually using hitting as a way of teaching as opposed to better alternatives.

this does not mean a parent who hits isnt a loving parent and i think being a loving and caring and responsible parent is the thing that is of primary importance, more than whether a parent hits a child or not. But people who actually go to the trouble of raising their children without EVER laying a finger on them and just through reasoning and authority should DEFINITELY get more respect for never resorting to hitting as they have chosen the more difficult and in my opinion the better path to raise a child.

my mother used to cane us when we were kids. i remembered we used to run all over the house just trying to escape the lashing. i dun hold any grudges against my mother now because looking back, probably we were very naughty kids and it was like a game to us, but painful! and i'm sure she did not intend to hurt us. i still love her a lot now. :-)

you dont neccessarly have to beat or hit them

if i had kids first i would take away there most favorite toys or privliges if that didnt work then i would put them on my knee and spank their keester with a belt.

there is a saying you can bend a branch while it's green but when it's dry if you try to bend it it will break. same goes for young children. you must teach them discipline punish them when they do something bad to show that cannot do that. a children doesn't know what is good for him so you teach him to talk to him about bad things and inshallah when he grows up he will stay a way.

If a parent believes in spanking (slapping on the bum), the parent should remember to calm down. The spanking isn't supposed to be an expression of anger. If it is, the parent has some issues that need to be worked out.

Kids are not punching bags.

Ditto to all of the above.

Though I was belted, a LOT! So much so that I would go around the house, finding every belt and hiding it, so that when she'd get mad in future, there'd be no belts for her to find :D

Didn't work...

I still love my mum more than words can say, and pray for her soul every single day. May she rest in peace inshaAllah, ameen....

I believe that some children need to get beaten up to keep them in line

Not anywhere it causes damage, with not too much force. to this end.. caining em rounda backside is a good idea too, or just a good beating round the butt . and if that doesnt work..... then theres lots of other ways.

ok, dunno about the fathers on here, but i VERY rarely, have to hit my son to make him behave (even tho sometimes i feel like giving him good licking :D )

i think if u start out ,disciplining your kids with beats then that is the ONLY time they will listen to u from there on, and then in the furture u will have no choice but to smack them to make them listen.

when my son is naughty these are the punishmenets i give out (no calling up the NSPCC).

Please feel free to use any of these on yur on children :)

1) i tell him to go sit in his bedroom by himself, which he finds excruiciatingly painful. (o know , cos he sneaks on to the stairs and stares at me thru the bannisters with the mummy-feel-sorry-for-me face)

2) i tell him that the angels jus wrote down what he said/did and they are going to show allah (swt) tonight. that ususally gets him going! (ok ,i know the angels aint jotting stuff down jus yet for him, but gotta get him used to it right?)

3) like another sister said, take away their favourite toy.

this is jus a selection but u get the jist, i think u should avoid hitting children as much as u can.
