Assalaamu Alaikum everyone (and Hello to the non-muslims :) ),
It has come to my attention that some users appear to be under the misconception that rep comments are like PM's. I am posting this thread to completely dispel that false assumption.
Rep Comments are NOT private messages.
They can be viewed and edited by moderators and administrators of the forum at our discretion or on user request. Like posts on the main boards, they can be edited and disciplinary action can be taken based on them if that is appropriate.
Sajid had already warned that abuse of the rep system could also result in it being disabled for offending users.
Users may wish to note that all area's of the forums which are private are declared as such, this is why Private forums have the prefix "Private" to them and why PM's are called just that, Private Messages.
Note that rep comments do not hold that prefix, and so should not be mistaken as being private.
So I suggest that users not use rep comments to:
a) Backbite other users
b) Slander other users
c) Insult/namecall other others
d) Speak inappropriately to non-mahrems
and so on.
Moderators can and may see such comments if you make them, and even where we can't/don't (e.g. PM's) we should fear Allah(swt) before uttering bad words, inshaAllah.
The rep system is here for you to show appreciation for a users posts/input so please use it correctly.
Wa alaikum as salaam,

Sajid, could you, CW or anybody explain the purpose of rep points ? I've never bothered to check them or use them.I've seen posts where somebody who is not in lock step with the prevailing opinion is accosted with the suggestion they should receive massive negative reps. Lord knows poor Mrs. Penfold was stacking up a truly impressive mountain of negative reps. Maybe it serves some legitimate purpose, but I don't see it. It's readily apparent during any exchange that posters will be at odds over various issues, so it has the appearance of being a popularity contest with the odds immediately stacked against certain..ah-hem..non-muslim posters.

They were brought in before I was a mod.
But I believe the original purpose was for it to be a system through which users can show appreciation and/or approval for the input of other user. Or of course disaproval.
So if you agree with someones post or think they made a brilliant post, you can express that by repping them. I guess it reduces the number of "I agree's" or "good post" one liners we used to get too.
Plus it's nice in the sense that you get feed back and support and get to read sweet messages from lovely people :D
Like you said, you can be the victim of negs as well, but thats the way it goes.
I think you'll find its TOTALLY false that non-Muslims have the odds stacked against them.
Go to the Member List and click on the Reputation column, it will arrange the Members in order of Highest Rep *goes off to check it herself*
You'll see that Yorkie, Bub, Kaph, History are all at the top end. Sfvalley had one of the hightest ones (1000+) too before he got banned.
So it's just not true to say the odds are stacked against the non-Muslims.
Mrs.Penfold talks complete nonsense the best part of the time, it's not surprising she got negged so much :) ..I guess negging does have it's uses.

Hmmm...recently I'm 0 fer 2 on opinions against you ! But that's good to know, even if it's surprising, thanks for the reply. Any chance 'ol SFValley could use the accumulated points to ransom his predicament ?
