the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam]

Similar to the obedience of the commands of Allah (swt), obedience of the commands of the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] should be followed.

Abu Huraira told that the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] addressed them saying: O People! Haj (pilgrimage) has been ordained for you, so perform it. A man asked whether it should be performed annually, but the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] gave no reply till he had asked the question three times. Then he [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] said: If I were to say that it should, it would be obligatory and you would not be able to perform it, after which he [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] said: Leave me alone as long as I have said nothing to you, for your predecessors perished simply on account of their much questioning and their disagreement with their prophets. But when I command you to do anything, obey it as much as you can; and when I forbid you to do anything, leave it alone.

Abu Sa'eed bin Al Mu'alla relates: I was performing my prayer in the Mosque. The Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] called me. I did not answer his call, then (after finishing the prayer) when I appraoched him I said, Oh Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] I was performing my prayer, (hence, I could not come to you when you called me) He stated: Did not Allah command (in the Holy Quran): People, when Allah and His Messenger call you obey their command.

Abdullah (bin Mas'ood) stated that Allah has cursed the women who tatoo their bodies, pullout the hairs from their faces and for looking pretty have their teeth straightened and further for changing what Allah (swt) has made for them. When a woman of Bani Asad named Umme Yakoob, who used to read the Quran heard this, came to Abdullah (bin Mas'ood) and said: I heard that you have cursed the woman who tatoo their bodies, who remove their hairs from their faces, and those who widen their teeth and those who change what Allah (swt) has made for them. Abdullah (bin Mas'ood) said why should I not curse such a woman for whom the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] had cursed and this matter is also mentioned in the Quran. The woman said, I have read the whole Quran which is preserved in two tablets, but I did not find anything about this matter. Abdullah (bin Mas'ood) said if you had studied the Quran carefully (the way in which it should be read) you would definately find this matter in it. Allah (swt) declares: "Whatever the Messenger commands act upon it and whatever he forbids forego them." Then the woman said; some of the above signs are to be found in your wife. Abdullah said: Go and see for yourself. The woman went and saw her but could not find any of the above signs in her. She returned and said I have not seen any of the above signs in your wife. Abdullah stated: If she had done it, I would not have had any connection with her.

Obedience of the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] is obedience of Allah (swt) and disobedience of the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] is disobedience of Allah (swt). Therefore, obedience of both is equally obligatory in the same degree.

Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah

Some angels came to the Prophet [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] while he was sleeping. Some of them said, "He is sleeping." Others said, "His eyes are sleeping but his heart is awake." Then they said, "There is an example for this companion of yours." One of them said, "Then set forth an example for him." Some of them said, "He is sleeping." The others said, "His eyes are sleeping but his heart is awake." Then they said, "His example is that of a man who has built a house and then offered therein a banquet and sent an inviter (messenger) to invite the people. So whoever accepted the invitation of the inviter, entered the house and ate of the banquet, and whoever did not accept the invitation of the inviter, did not enter the house, nor did he eat of the banquet." Then the angels said, "Interpret this example to him so that he may understand it." Some of them said, "He is sleeping.) The others said, "His eyes are sleeping but his heart is awake." And then they said, "The houses stands for Paradise and the call maker is Muhammad [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam]; and whoever obeys Muhammad [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam], obeys Allah; and whoever disobeys Muhammad [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam], disobeys Allah. Muhammad [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] separated the people (i.e., through his message, the good is distinguished from the bad, and the believers from the disbelievers)."

Miqdaam bin Ma'di Karb relates that the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] stated: People! Remember! There is another thing like the Quran (Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam]) which is given to me by Allah. Beware! A time will come when a bellyfull (proud person) will be sitting resting on the cushion and saying: People for you Quran is sufficient, whatever is permitted in it is permitted only and what is prohibited is prohibited only, although whatever the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] has prohibited is prohibited just as if Allah has declared it to be forbidden. Listen: A domestic donkey is not permitted to you although its prohibition is not mentioned in the Holy Quran. Nor those beasts who have canine teeth nor the fallen article of an infidel is permitted, Yes! If its owner is not in any need of it then it is permitted.

In religious laws, commands of the Noble Qur'an and the commands of the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] have equal status.

Abu Huraira and Zaid bin Khalid transmit that a villager approached the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] and said: Oh Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] ! I put you on oath by Allah that please decide my case according to the Book of Allah. The other party to the case was more intelligent. He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah decide the matter according the Noble Quran, but permit me to say something. He [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] said: Say, what you want. He submitted: My son was employed in his house, and he committed adultery with his wife. People said your son is liable to be stoned to death. I have given in charity 100 sheep by way of penance and also freed one slave girl. Then I asked the learned people and they said your son is liable to the punishment of 100 lashes and one year of exile from the land and the wife of the respondent is liable to be stoned to death. The Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] stated: By Allah! In whose hands is my life, I will decide the case between you according to the Book of Allah. He commanded the first party to take back the sheep and the slavegirl, the punishment for your son is 100 lashes and exile from the land for one year. He then ordered one of the companions, Anas to go tommorrow and ask the woman whether she confesses to have comitted adultery, if she confesses then stone her to death. Anas went next day, the woman confessed to have committed adultery and was stoned to death by the command of the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] .

To save one self from going astray the command is to obey both the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] .

Abu Huraira [Radi Allahu anhu : May Allah be pleased with him] transmits that the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] stated: I am leaving two things behind for you all. If you act upon them you will never go astray. One is the Book of Allah and the other is my Sunnah.

In religious precepts the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] is guided by divine revelation, the obedience of which, like the command of Allah (swt) is obligatory.

Jabir says I fell ill when the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] and Abu Bakr visited to find out about my illness. I was unconscious. He performed wudhu and sprinkled the water of the wudhu on me, and I became conscious. I said! Oh Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam], once Sufyan asked you as to what he should do with the wealth. Then Sufyan informed that you did not reply until the verse regarding inheritance was revealed.

Sahel bin Saad transmits that a man visited the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] and submitted: O Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] if any person see his wife with a stranger then what should he do. If he kills, then you might inflict capital punishment, after all what should be done. He did not reply until Allah revealed the command in respect of li'aan in between them. Then the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] told the person: The course of yourself and your wife has been decided. Consequently, both adopted li'aan. (The transmitter stated that, at that time he was with the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam], since then this Sunnah is used to separate the husband and wife who adopt li'aan.

Abdullah (bin Mas'ood) [Radi Allahu anhu : May Allah be pleased with him] relates: Once I was in a garden with the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam]. He was resting on the branch of a date palm when Jews passed by, and were saying to one another. Ask him (the Messenger of Allah) about the soul (spirit). One of them said what has put you in doubt about the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] (that he is not a Messenger). Some Jews said: Muhammad may not say anything which will displease. Then they decided to ask the question. Consquently, the Jews asked him, What is soul (spirit)? The Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] was silent and did not answer them. I concluded that something is being revealed to him. Consequently, I stood up at my place. When the revelation was completed, he recited the following verse: "They ask thee concerning the Spirit, Say: The spirit is the command of my Lord." Sura Bani Isra'el (17:85)

Apart from the Noble Qur'an Allah (swt) instructed the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] in religious commands also, therefore it is obligatory to have faith in them and act upon them just as it is obligatory to have faith in the commands of the Noble Qur'an and act upon them.

Anas (bin Malik) transmits that the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] stated: Allah has shown indulgence to a traveller to shorten his prayer by half and to postpone fasting till a later date. Whereas he [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] has shown indulgence to an expecting mother and nursing mother to postpone only fasting till a later date.

A woman came to Allah's Apostle [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] and said, "O Allah's Apostle! Men (only) benefit by your teachings, so please devote to us from (some of) your time, a day on which we may come to you so that you may teach us of what Allah has taught you." Allah's Apostle [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] said, "Gather on such-and-such a day at such-and-such a place." They gathered and Allah's Apostle [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] came to them and taught them of what Allah had taught him. He then said, "No woman among you who has lost her three children (died) but that they will screen her from the Fire." A woman among them said, "O Allah's Apostle! If she lost two children?" She repeated her question twice, whereupon the Prophet [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] said, "Even two, even two, even two!"

Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] and His Companions

The companions of the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] endeavoured to follow the sayings and the deeds of the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] as they were which they heard from him or saw him performing.

It is not necessary to understand the expedience and wisdom of a Sunnah with a view to obey it.

Narrated by AbuSa'id al-Khudri

While the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) was leading his Companions in prayer, he took off his sandals and laid them on his left side; so when the people saw this, they removed their sandals. When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) finished his prayer, he asked: What made you remove your sandals? The replied: We saw you remove your sandals, so we removed our sandals. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) then said: Gabriel came to me and informed me that there was filth in them. When any of you comes to the mosque, he should see; if he finds filth on his sandals, he should wipe it off and pray in them.

AbuHurayrah led us in the Jumu'ah prayer and recited after Surat al-Jumu'ah in the second rak'ah: "When the hypocrites came to thee" (Surah 63). I then met AbuHurayrah as he came back and said to him: You have recited two surahs which Ali ibn AbuTalib used to recite in Kufah. Upon this AbuHurayrah said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) reciting these two in the Friday (prayer).

He then enquired: Oh Naafe! Are you hearing anything, I said. 'Nothing.' Then he removed his fingers from his ears and stated: I was with the Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam], when he heard the sound of flute, he did the same thing as I did now. Naafe also said, I was then a boy of ten years.

The Messenger of Allah [Salla Allahu Aleihi Wassalam] then advised, him when you sneeze say: Praise be to Allah and the person sneezing should say (May Allah have Mercy on you) and the person sneezing should reply May Allah forgive me and you.
