Imam al-Ghazali on Time (http://www.sunnipath.com/resources/Questions/qa00000015.aspx)

“You should not neglect your time or use it haphazardly; on the contrary you should bring yourself to account, structure your litanies and other practices during each day and night, and assign to each period a fixed and specific function. This is how to bring out the spiritual blessing (baraka) in each period.

But if you leave yourself adrift, aimlessly wandering as cattle do, not knowing how to occupy yourself at every moment, your time will be lost. It is nothing other than your life, and your life is the capital that you make use of to reach perpetual felicity in the proximity of God the Exalted.

Each of your breaths is a priceless jewel, since each of them is irreplaceable and, once gone, can never be retrieved. Do not be like that deceived fools who are joyous because each day their wealth increases while their life shortens.

What good is an increase in wealth when life grows ever shorter? Therefore be joyous only for an increase in knowledge or in good works, for they are your two companions who will accompany you in your grave when your family, wealth, children and friends stay behind.”

Imam Al Ghazali (May Allah have mercy on him) wrote this in his book: ‘The Beginning of Guidance’

IMAM GHAZALI'S (R.A.) EXPERIENCE

That is why the experience of Imam Ghazali (r.a.) is a valuable lesson. Ayuhatullab! Listen carefully!

Having completed his studies, Imam Ghazali (r.a.) was en route back home. On the way the caravan in which he was travelling was waylaid by robbers. Together with his co-travellers, Imam Ghazali (r.a.) was dispossessed of all his goods. Amongst his possessions were the carefully written notes of the lectures delivered by his ustads. These notes were also taken by the robbers. Imam Ghazali (r.a.) sought out the leader of the band of robbers and pleaded with him: "Your men have taken all my possessions except for the clothes I wear. You may keep the extra clothes and other valuables - I do not lament their loss. However, please ask your men to return the papers they have taken."

The leader of the band of robbers was amazed at this unusual request. This young man was not worried about clothes and valuables, but he was asking for some pieces of paper to be returned!

Very curious, he asked: "What papers are these?"

Imam Ghazali (r.a.) explained: "I am a student returning home after completing my studies. When my teachers used to lecture, I used to make notes. These are those very pages of 'ilm that I am requesting to be returned to me."

The leader of the robbers said, "What you have just said fills me with great sorrow and regret. Young lad! Is your 'ilm on pieces of paper when it should have been in your heart? Papers can get lost. Papers can be destroyed by fire, become parched by the sun, get eaten by moths, become damaged with damp, etc., etc. You are dependent on papers? It fills me with great pity. Your 'ilm should be in your heart! Be that as it may, your papers will be returned."

He summoned one of his men and ordered him, "Give back to this boy his papers." The notes were retrieved and returned to Imam Ghazali (r.a.).

Imam Ghazali (r.a.) was of noble character. He was, moreover, a dedicated student. The words of the gang-leader were like a knife piercing his heart. On reaching home, he lost no time in memorising all his notes!

who was abu haamid al ghazaalee may Allaah have mercy on him:

Abu Haamid Al-Ghazaalee who wrote the book 'Ihyaa ‘Uloom-ud-Deen', according to the methodology of the (Sufi) people, which he filled with baseless ahaadeeth even though he knew well they were baseless. He spoke about knowledge of the Mukaashafah (unveiling of unseen by Allaah to Sufis) and withdrew from the principles of Fiqh. And he stated such things as: ‘Indeed the stars, the sun and the moon, which Ibraaheem saw, were in fact lights that screened Allaah!’ Such things are not mentioned in any of the sources of knowledge. Rather, this is from the types of speech of the Baatiniyyah.

He (Al-Ghazaalee) also said in the book 'Al-Mufsih bil-Ahwaal': "While in their state of wakefulness, the Sufis are able to witness the angels and souls of the prophets, hear their voices and take hold of benefit from them. Then this condition escalates from the witnessing (of their) images to levels in which they are contained within these domains."

Abu Hamid al Ghazali (Or most commonly known as Imam Al Ghazali) in his Ihyaa Uloom al Deen vol 4 p356 said "One look at the face of Abu Yazid al-Bistami (died 874) is better than seeing the face of Allaah more than 70 times"

As for the true pure believe of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jammah Prophet Muhammad (peace be upoun him) mentioned in the authentic hadith the most beloved delight of the believer in Paradise will be to see the face of Allaah. May we all be amongst those blessed to see Allaah the most High. Ameen.

1896. Suhaib (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "When the inhabitants of Jannah enter Jannah, Allah, the Glorious and Exalted, will say to them: `Do you wish me to give you anything more?' They will reply: `Have You not made our faces bright? Have You not brought us into Jannah and delivered us from the Hell?' And Allah will remove the Veil. The (dwellers of Jannah) will feel that they have not been awarded anything dearer to them than looking at their Rubb.''

Asalamu alaykum,

The pseudo-Salafis truly are a shameless breed. Look how they attack a man who the Ummah has adored and loved for hundreds of years. A man known as Hujjat al Islam whose works are taught and studied by the Muslims all over the world.

But no, this deviant sect has taken it upon themselves to attack one after the other the great Ulema of this deen.

May Allah grant them their just deserves.

I have already answered this issue of using weak hadith in the area of virtuous deeds / Fada'il in another thread set up by As salafee to attack this great Imam:

http://www.ummah.com/forum/showpost.php?p=521249&postcount=15

and

http://www.ummah.com/forum/showpost.php?p=521271&postcount=16

As for this statement which the salafiyya are attributing to Imam al-Ghazali I ask how can they do this when elsewhere about this statement they say that it is from Aboo Turaab as mentioned in that book? Imam al-Ghazali's Ihya contains lest than 35% of his own words. Furthermore, I have scoured Volume four page 356 and am yet to come across this quote - which publisher / translation of this book is it taken from? Which chapter?

If you really have any doubt about what Imam al-Ghazali thinks about this issue then why do the Salafi deviant sect ignore what he says in the chapter labelled "GREATEST PLEASURE IN KNOWLEDGE AND VISION OF GOD"?

Because they are slanderers of the Awliya. No wonder they are disliked in the majority of Muslim lands where the Ahl al-bidah are often known as Wahabi / Ahl -e- hadith / salafiyya , etc..

May Allah protect us from their hatred and may He grant the Ulema like Imam al-Ghazali the highest of stations in Jannah.

Wasalam.

Hello AbuMubarak,
I realize it is not my place to make this comment but,
if the conversations above are locked away from sight,
I would be robbed of the opportunity to learn from them.
Again, I realize it is not my place to make this comment but, .........?

faqir, but if I cut & pasted the crap you write on sunniforum on this board, then people would know who the real pseudo-salafi is.

People who can't even speak basic Farsi and claim they are the vanguards of Imam Ghazali (ra). Just a bunch of robots who keep yelling 'sidi' over & over again.
