The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: "Whosoever relieves from a believer
some hardship of this world, Allah will relieve from him some hardship
of the Hereafter. Whosoever alleviates the difficulties of a needy
person, Allah will alleviate his difficulties in both this world and
the Hereafter. Whosoever conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will
conceal his faults in this world and the Hereafter. Allah is at the
aid of His servant, so long as the servant aids his brother." [Muslim]

EID CELEBRATIONS IN THE UK
Diwali celebrations have been taking place in Trafalgar Square, much
like the Vaisakhi celebrations earlier this year and the Chinese New
Year activities organised annually. Where are the Eid celebrations?
Does anyone know about them? Are we as 2.5 million Muslims interested
in engaging with the wider community or are we once again ghettoising
ourselves by having functions at mosques or local community halls and
preaching to the converted?
Let's forget Trafalgar Square for a moment. How about dealing with the
rude boyz who will be driving up and down Green Street, Wilmslow Road,
Stratford Road or Southall Broadway this Eid? They will behave like
complete yobbos, shouting abuse at police officers, prancing about in
their limousines waving flags and feeling all nationalistic, checking
out the girls, many of whom will no doubt be seeking the attention,
spliffing ganja and perhaps getting drunk as well. Let's be realistic,
they are not going to attend functions in mosques, town halls or halal
restaurants. The celebrations need to be held where the people will
gather. Are there any viable alternatives?
How about organising a street festival, where mosques and community
groups work in conjunction with the Police to cordon off a section of
the major streets mentioned above. This has to be done on Eid day
itself as opposed to a couple of weeks later. In this way, everybody,
including reverts, foreign students, those with small families and
even rude boyz and "Romeos and Juliets" will want to join in. There
is no need for lectures or preaching, just a healthy mix of comedy,
food, nasheeds, art, reminders, poetry, Qur'an soundbites, various
stalls, and just general chilling out.
Nobody is suggesting that we have a Notting Hill style carnival here.
Although to its credit, the Notting Hill Carnival is consistent, well
organised and takes place every year regardless of the weather.
Is anyone interested in this or do you have any proactive proposals?
Not clichés such as "Ramadan is a family occasion, masha'Allah!" or
"Islam means peace". Practical suggestions that can be implemented
realistically.
We would especially like to hear from the large organisations, who
have been blessed with many members and have the resources to tackle
this head on if they really take it seriously.
If you are interested or have ideas or comments, please e-mail
islamic_circles@hotmail.com or call 07092 032 763.
