I do contemporary islamic art (3 dimensional, painting, calligraphy). I need to know whether I can make a table designed from kufic script, of the word "Allah"?
Is that allowed? It will be a functional piece of furniture. I know we should beautify our homes with the word and scriptures of Allah, but does that limit us to 2 dimensional artworks to be hung up on walls?

I THINK IT SOUNDS GR8 BUT IF NY THINK is gunna b on it...well der its a tabl.....then dnt. dats my opinion!
:salams
Again, only an opinion - but inscribing the name of Allah Most High on a table may be impermissible, as it likely that there may be spillage and such impurities. In addition, if it is a functional table, His Glorious name is likely to be covered and obscured by things like plates and tableware, and maybe even magazines (and these days even TV listings magazines have inappropriate images on them etc) and the such.
It would be safer to inscribe His Name on an item that will be handled delicately and carefully (like the cover of a religious book for example), or not handled at all - such as framed and hung high on a wall - even then the room in which such a picture is hung also has to be considered, e.g. it would be inappropriate to hang such an inscription in a bedroom etc.
Allah Ta'ala knows best.

Asalamu alaykum,
This may be relevant:
Using calligraphical designs on textile related products
One of my friend is a textile designer, He wants to know that what are
the
rulings on using calligraphical designs on textile related products
specially like clothes, curtains, sofa clothes, cushions etc.?
Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,
Mere designs are fine on such surfaces. However, it would be
impermissible
to write Qur'anic verses or the Names of Allah or His Messenger (peace
and
blessings be upon him), or anything of the Shariah sciences, on
anything
that is likely to be sat on, placed on the floor, or used in other ways
contrary to the respect due to the signs of Allah.
And Allah alone gives success.

Super late reply, I know... but I do mainly 2-dimensional art i.e. paintings and drawings, calligraphy etc.
Thanks for all your input.. I've slightly modified the structure to be attached to a wall.. still gonna be functional as shelving.. but I guess that'll be for my islamic artifacts and books.
Shukru'Allah
