View Full Version : It's SNOWING outside ! ! !

I don't have any prose to recite but,
wintertime is a season some might never experience so,
I wished to tell everyone that outside, snow is falling to the ground.
Soon the lakes will freeze over and the snow will be knee-high.
Having to remove it is quite a pain but,
once cleared and you take a ride around, everything is a soft white glimmer.
Today is the very first of many days ahead and even though I know there's work coming,
it still so very beautiful to watch.
And to think, God created the process which forms a snowflake in such a way that each one is unique and a true individual.
Just like you ;)

Isn't snow a great gift?
We only had a trace fall here in the city last Wednesday night, but by the time we arrived at my brother's house on Thursday there were 5-6 inches laying on the ground and the wind had etched every twig and tree branch with a shimmering light.
It made me think of a song...the lyrics went something like..."snow, snow where are you falling...summer's gone and winter's here..snow oh the beautiful snow..." but I can't seem to find them online.
I did find these though, they are lovely:
Snowfall
Softly
Gently drift down
Snowflakes
Whisper
’neath my window
Covering trees
Misty lights
Velvet breeze
’round my doorstep
Gently
Softly
Silent
Snowfall
Covering trees
Misty lights
Velvet breezes
’neath my window
Gently
And softly
Silent
Snowfall
Drift down
Drift down
Drift down
Snowfall

That depends on whether you hold the shovel or not :)

That depends on whether you hold the shovel or not :)
I love to shovel snow so much that my landlord bought me and my sons our own shovels.
It is such a joy to be out on a clear bright day after a storm clearing a path and enjoying the crisp air and sparkling vistas.
To soon here though the cars' pollution turns the view into a grey, sloshy, mess.
I suppose if shoveling were my job, instead of my recreation I'd begin to lose my enthusiasm for it.
But until then...let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

When we get real snow, this is what my neighborhood looks like:
www.polskiinternet.com/chicago/images/zima1.jpg
For you Londoners, those large objects you see in front of the homes are called "trees".
If you like what you see, we could lend you our mayor for a short time, he has planted them all over the city, in business areas, neighborhoods, and parks as he considers them an investment for the health and well-being of our grandchildren.
No snow, but ice-skating at the weekend was a good laugh....

My brother lives in the desert in California, but just south of Yosemite.
In winter, whenever he and his kids want to play in the snow they drive up to the mountains.
Have you ever been up to the mountains?
It's got to be breathtaking.

I've only been out to visit in the summer.
We drove to Yosemite a few times, and then out to Grant's Grove to see the Sequoias.
The last time I went out there my brother took us east to King's Canyon, the drive was a little harrowing, a narrow two lane road with a sharp drop off just past the guardrail, but the views were fantastic.
It makes you appreciate the gift we have been given on this Earth.

Your coast is lovely.
We were driven once from Santa Cruz down through Carmel and stopped at Big Sur. It was gorgeous.
But on my own I took the train from San Francisco to LA. For part of the route the train ran along the coast and at sunset it was a magnificent sight.
In fact I took the California Zephyr from Chicago to Oakland once, it was a memorable way to see the changing geography. The trip from Denver up into the mountains was especially exciting. We passed through many beautiful, desolate areas. Hard to imagine ordinary people making that trip on foot, horse, or wagons.

Obviously no one here has seen a MN snow then they may not like the snow as much YUCK!!! call me scrooge when it comes to snow. I used to have to walk to school knee deep in the stuff I hated it. On top of the fact MN has the coldest winters known to Man (in America that is). I think the last time I enjoyed the snow was when i was twelve and thats only cause of a funny incident.
Then I moved to cali and MAN what a beautiful change of scenery hehe..
I lived just outside of the Mojave Desert and I loved it there...
After that I never wanted to see snow again (but then...) i decided to go to NY and mashaa Allah the choice was worth enduring the snow :)

My favorite winter was 1967....After unseasonably warm temperatures, snow started falling at 5:02 a.m. Thursday January 26. Snow continued to fall through Friday morning for a total accumulation of 23 inches, with drifts to 6 feet.
http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:Q6BESjcffKIJ:www.met.utah.edu/jimsteen/ams/quizpics/q3.jpg
Cold weather and periodic snowfalls over the next 10 days created more havoc. Although trains continued to run, cars, buses and planes didn't. Almost all schools, offices and other work places were closed for several days. Commuters unable to reach home spent several nights camped out in downtown hotels, O'Hare International Airport and stranded cars. The Department of Streets and Sanitation, which is responsible for plowing streets, estimated that 75 million tons of snow fell on Chicago. Some of it was sent south in empty railcars as a present to Florida children who had never seen snow before.
It was a dream come true for a child.
http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:DHu63OY2cswJ:www.house.gov/bernie/multimedia/20031215001/snow-03.jpg
My father got home late, after several days of walking and hitchhiking from downtown to our suburb.
http://nsidc.org/snow/gallery/blizzard_1967.jpg
By the time he got home the neighbors had organized an expedition to the local dairy for milk that was delivered door-to-door to the families on the block.
I was small enough then that I could walk on top of the snow in many places where the snow had frozen on top.
We spent the week out of school, busy building forts and snowmen and had some great battles using snowballs and covert operations along the snow piled corridors between each house. Moms kept us supplied with dry mittens and hot cocoa.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

Hehehehehe. I still like the snow. I refuse to drive in it though, lol. I loved it when we got over 2 feet here in NY 2 years ago. Hubby didn't have to go to work because all the trucks where snowed in. But then again since i came back from Saudi, that was the first decent amout of snow i had seen in 5 years. LOL. So i guess i got a bit excited about it.
The only thing that was bad is that we had to keep opening the front door because it opens outwards and i didn't want to not be able to open the door.

But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Well, it doesn't show signs of stopping
But we've got some corn for popping
And the lights are turned way down low
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
When we finally kiss goodnight
How I hate going out in the storm
But as long as you hold me tight
Oh, all the way home I'll be warm
The fire is slowly dying
But my dear we're still goodbye-ing
And as long as you love me so
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

It's raining here, a good-old-fashioned thunder and lightning storm that by all rights shouldn't arrive here until April or May.
It's hard to say which I like better, a snowstorm or a thunderstorm.
But either way, both are a blessing unless you are caught outside without the right gear.
Does the UK get any proper snowstorms? Or thunderstorms?
It's hard for me to imagine living in a climate that didn't have the extremes that I have come to appreciate here in the Midwest.

Too bad the snow we had last night was anything but gentle.
It was an Alberta Clipper (http://www.weathernotebook.org/transcripts/2000/02/15.html), no real accumulation, but plenty of frigid air blowing what we had all over the streets.
And the frost patterns that are etched on our window glass are truly spectacular this year.
Now though, a lull between the storms which gives me time to run out for more hot chocolate.
Inshallah.

We're still getting some lovely scattered snow showers.
If you want to take all the magic out of this glorious weather, read this:
Snow Flurries: The Winter Equivalent Of Summer's Thundershowers
Published March 14, 2005
Cold-season snow flurries and their more vigorous siblings, snow showers, are generated by the same atmospheric condition that produces scattered afternoon thundershowers in the summer--instability. Warmer air overlaid by colder air is the prime ingredient for atmospheric instability.
How Snow Flurries Usually Develop
Sunlight warms the ground and overlying air. Mild air rises, and then condenses into cumulus and stratocumulus clouds. In cases of extreme instability, clouds can swell into cumulonimbus (the thunderhead), and the result is thundersnow--thunderstorms with snow rather than rain. Nationally, thundersnow occurs more often in March than in any other month.
I prefer this description:
Snow makes whiteness where it falls,
The bushes look like popcorn balls.
The places where I always play,
Look like somewhere else today.
~First Snow

I am shocked to learn that some people think that there is such a thing as too much snow:
Unlike the Eskimos we only have one word for snow but we have a lot of modifiers for that word. There is too much snow, which, unlike rain, does not immediately run off. It falls and stays for months. Someone wished for this snow. Someone got a deal, five cents on the dollar, and spent the entire family fortune.* It's the simple solution, it covers everything. We are never satisfied with the arrangement of the snow so we spend hours moving the snow from one place to another. Too much snow. I box it up and send it to family and friends. I send a big box to my cousin in California. I send a small box to my mother. She writes "Don't send so much. I'm all alone now. I'll never be able to use so much." To you I send a single snowflake, beautiful, complex and delicate; different from all the others.

We got a light covering on the weekend, but it's all gone now.
I may have to relocate to experience the kind of winter I have always dreamed of.
Is a blizzard, a fireplace, a full refrigerator, and a houseful of loved ones too much to ask for?
All praise to Allah (swt)...I got my wish.
Ok, no blizzard, YET! :inlove:
Winter Beauty
When it's winter in the Valley
and my breath hangs in the air,
The snow will crunch beneath my feet
and glisten in the air.
The stars at night light up my world
so I never walk alone;
It's clear and crisp and beautiful
in the Valley I call home.

Every winter,
When the great sun has turned his face away,
The earth goes down into a vale of grief,
And fasts, and weeps, and shrouds herself in sables,
Leaving her wedding-garlands to decay -
Then leaps in spring to his returning kisses.

Here comes Suzy Snowflake
Dressed in a snow white gown
Tap, tap, tappin' at your window pane
To tell you she's in town
Here comes Suzy Snowflake
Soon you will hear her say
"Come out ev'ryone and play with me
I haven't long to stay
If you want to make a snowman
I'll help you make one, two, three
If you wanna take a sleigh ride
The ride's on me."
Here comes Suzy Snowflake
Look at her tumblin' down
Bringing joy to every girl and boy
Suzy's come to town

I'm west of you...the snow is lovely, but the cold is bitter.
Hardly time to go out and play before you have to go back inside to warm up.

Delicate
And feathery,
Crystal clear
And white,
Six-point stars
Come tumbling,
Softly
In the night.
