Asalamu alaykum Akhi Abu Mubarak,

That would, of course, depend on who you ask and what their understanding of bid'ah was.

Here is one reply to such a question:

And Allah ta'ala knows best.

when anyone wants to say EID SAYYID, think of our brothers in fallujah who are being attacked by the americans, the brits, and their own iraqi brothers

we must be mindful from being in the mindset of the kuffar, who can have holiday parties while the homeless sleep outside the banquet room

a believer is one who does not go to bed with a full stomach, while his brother goes to bed hungry

maybe this is why when the prophet greeted the muslims during eid, he did not say, eid mubarak, but rather, taqabballah minaa wa minkum

lets not fall into party spirit, esp while forgetting about our ummah's sufferings

lets not fall into party spirit, esp while forgetting about our ummah's sufferings Our Prothet left us with two Eids - eid ul fitr and eid ul adha. Those are our Islamic holidays and i dont see anything wrong with going to pray in the mosque, thanking Allah for his blessings and congratulating each other with Eid Mubarak. We need not to make long tables with rich foods to feel the holiday, but we can enjoy it through prayer and spending time with our fellow Muslims. I agree that many of our brethren around the world are suffering, but if we stay sad and closed in our homes on Eid is that going to help them
What i think we need to do is looking for practical ways to help - like making strikes against America and coalition being there, like donating money to organizations working to provide food and medicaments to the needy regions or the best even way - praying for their victory every day and especialy during the blessed days of Ramadan.

no one said not to go to the eid, nor pray, nor reflect

its the whole HAPPY EID salutations that i am referring to

i would never tell any muslim to abandon a sunnah

yes it is our festival, but what exactly would we be celebrating, while our brothers all over the world are fighting, alone, while muslim nations have armies and muslims are partying for the eid

Abu Mubarak, I am confident that most people here will be celebrating on the basis that it is an islamic incentive to rejoice. A festival implies festivity... that includes being happy, needless to say that the supplications of the believers arent forever with those who are oppressed and fighting to better the islamic cause.

The cards, well it's become a tradition for some maybe but never one that they feel obliged to. I think the cards is a way of offering their rememberance to friends and family- they don't necessarily consider it a rewarding act or atleast, that isnt the intention behind it, yanee it is not ibaadah. Though if the intention is to please your brother and prompt a smile, then i would hope that is rewarded.

Allah knows best... May Allah fortify our ranks and grant success to those who are in worship while we play. Aameen.
