Islamic Circles Presents:
TAFSEER OF SURAH AL-ASR
By Ustadh Dr Kamal El-Helbawy*
Date: Sunday 26th September 2004
Time: 11am - 1pm
Venue: Froud Centre, 1 Toronto Avenue, on the corner with Romford Road,
Manor Park, London, E12 5JF
"By time! Verily all human beings are in loss, except those who truly
believe and perform righteous deeds, and encourage one another towards
the Truth and encourage one another towards patience and constancy."
Surah Al-'Asr is one of the shortest chapters of the Holy Qur'an and
yet it is perhaps one of the most comprehensive. It was also one of
the earliest surahs to be revealed and its message is simple and
easy to understand. It outlines the criteria for mankind's success
and failure. Imam Ash-Shafi'i (rh) said that "If the people were to
ponder over this surah, it would be sufficient for them."
Insha'Allah Ustadh Kamal will explain some of the commentaries on
this chapter and reflect on how it relates to our condition today.
* Dr Kamal El-Helbawy is a prominent scholar and consultant on
Muslim affairs. His many writings include the status of Muslims
in non Muslim societies. He has held several academic postions,
such as editor-in-chief for the Centre for International Policy
Studies in London, advisor at the Institute of Policy Studies
in Islamabad, and editor and founding member of the Arab weekly
Qadaya Dawliyya (International Affairs) in Pakistan. Much of his
da'wah activities were centred around the Muslim Brotherhood, for
which he was the European spokesman until 1997. He was formerly
chairman of the Muslim Association of Britain and is a founding
member of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) based in
Jeddah. He is currently chairman of the Muslim Investment
