Tabarani reported that it was the practice of any two Companions that when they met, one of them would recite Surat Al-'Asr, the other would listen. Then they would greet each other and disperse.
Imam Safi'i says that if people ponder over this surah, it is enough for them.
(1-3) 'Asr means time which is given to man for good or evil acts. Zaid bin Aslam took it to mean in the 'Asr prayer. But the general view is that it is time.
After taking the oath of the time, Allah says that man is in loss, except those who believe in Allah, do righteous deeds and exhort one another to follow the Path of the Truth and show patience and perserverance. They not only show patience on troubles and calamities, but call others to it.
