View Full Version : Athletes Foot now leading to problems with Wuzu

My feet began to crack circa one year ago, and the base of my left foot got rather painful last week.

I got advised by a friend who is a doctor to get some Daktarin Dual Action Cream, been applying this for the last few days and it has cleared up most the athletes foot. Feet are almost silky smooth again!

However, yesterday, the small toe on my left foot was in the accelarated stages of infection. It was all bloated and full of puss.........eeeeewwwww!

Went to emergency doctors surgery, been prescribed anti biotics, and doctor said just let the puss discharge and clear out.

I wasn't prepared to wait for the pus to discharge of its own accord as it felt like I was walking on a bag full of air.

So I popped the pus bag with a hot needle. it all cleared out all the pus and I ripped the skin off which covered the pus bag!

It is healing, but my foot is stinging, so I have had to take the day off work today.

I know where this infection and athletes foot is coming from. I like to shower day in day out and don't bother drying my feet properly. Also I know that I am catching germs off the floor in the masjid wuzu area, I've read up on athletes foot and related infections and logically I have narrowed it down the above.

What I need to know is that seeing that I have very gentle skin on my feet. Will I have to be so thorough when washing down my feet during wuzu, remember it is the water that is leading to my ailment or can I just wash over my feet, rather than going in between the toes. (this is where the cracks are created by the water and heat).

Also, I've decided not to do wuzu at masjid anymore because of the germs that I am catching off the floor.

I'll make wuzu at home instead before leaving for masjid.

However, if I put on cotton socks after wuzu then get to masjid and take off shoes and socks. Is my wuzu not valid because I was wearing shoes and socks?

Can someone shed some light on this cos I don't want to go into wuzu area to wash again, this will just trigger off the infection cycle.

Your thoughts would be most appreciated. I'll clarify this with my friend the good doctor next time I see him, not only is he a doctor, but he is also well learned with regards to matters pertaining to our deen.

In the mean-time would like to hear from you folks, as I am housebound today nursing my foot.

Allah Hafiz

Skin Disease & Washing Feet
Answered by Sidi Faraz Rabbani

http://www.sunnipath.com/images/Q_Image.jpgI've some skin disease on the upper part of my both feet. I put medication on them twice daily. Muslim doctors have asked me not to wet my feet since this will not help in the healing process. They have asked me not to wet my feet while doing wudu. If I try to wash only the bottom of my feet, the water comes on the top once I put my socks on. Sometimes it takes months or may be years for skin disease to go away. Will it be okay if I leave my feet while performing wudu for such a long time?

http://www.sunnipath.com/images/A_Image.jpg It is mentioned in al-Hadiyya al-`Ala’iyya of ` Ala ’ al-Din Abidin:

If one has an eye infection such that would be harmful to wash the top of the eyelids, then it is permitted to wipe them if able. Otherwise, if wiping is also harmful, one may leave it. [F: And one’s ablutions and prayers are valid, and do not need to be repeated. ]

The same applies if a nail was broken and one needed to apply medicine over it, or if one applied medicine over cracks on one’s feet in order to prevent water or the like from harming them… [Gifts of Guidance: A Complete Manual of Islam (al-Hadiyya al-`Ala’iyya)

Therefore, you do not need to wet you feet, as long as your excuse genuinely remains. You are considered to have a full, proper wudu in this case, and do not need to make up any prayers performed this way.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani.

Assalmualykum,

i also have atheltes foot bro, and it is quite bad, but from what your describing not as bad as yours. Anyway i just try and make sure my foot is wet all over one way or another just to make sure that the wudu is valid, although that stings when the water initally toucvhes my foot. however if a qlaified docter says to you that it is too dangerous to wet the foot then perhaps you may be excused, Allahu alam, but i prefer to still wet it, cos of the Quranic ayah that is clear on washing the foot.

What i suggest is that you get leather socks. when is tarted wearing leather socks, they helped my foot a lot alhamdullialh cos i only had to wet them once or twice a day, cos you just wipe over the leather socks when yor doing your wudu instead of wash your feet. (it can heat you up especially in the summer, if you can wear sandals with you leather socks it would be better and easier and comfier)

Also i recommed get a spare small towel that you keep only for drying you feet before you put your socks on, so that they are nice and dry quickly.

May Allah make it easy for both of us and all others who have the problem.

was salaam.

Thanks for the response GenN, much appreciated.

In all honesty I've never suffered from Athletes Foot before and until last week I didn't even think of my ailment as athletes foot.

It started circa last August, got a crack in between my big toe and noticed blood seeping out of it. I didn't take much heed, just assumed that I must got bitten by a bug or something.

Anyway, it healed up but cracks and lesions would appear and heal, the cycle continued.

Until this month just gone by, noticed that the skin looked rather irate then the pus bubble appeared!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eeewwww! From now on I won't be so fool hardy with regards to taking precautions and immediate remedial action in order to prevent infection.

But yeah the good doctor also told me to carry a towel with me just for drying my feet. I mean if I had used my common sense long time ago I would have figured out carrying a towel with me already!

Nonetheless, thanks for the reply GenN. I will probably bump into my friend the doctor during namaz time at masjid. So I'll get a professional opinion off him and I will also seek further clarification from a Deen point of view.

Although, from what you have posted from sunnipath.com I will try my utmost to wash my feet properly. However, I think this ailment might be my bodies way of telling me too not to be so thorough and over zealous with regards to washing methods.

Allah Hafiz

P.S. you may also want to check for the daktarin stuff. You can get it in talc but I got the dual action cream. It's pretty neat stuff, after 3 days of application the underside of my feet are almost as smooth as a shaved peach, hee hee hee.

zawja, hmm it wasn't too bad. Actually, it was kinda fun lancing the pus bag with the hot needle. I've always been slightly curious for matters pertaining to gross out. After lancing it off, I was gonna dip my foot in a tub of hot water mixed with Dettol but the doctor at the emergency clinic told me not to as it wouldn't help much, and it would really sting! I'm prepared to take a good stinging as long as it kills all the nasty germs. Ehem, anyway, I'll shut up now.
