Action: Lobby Dallas City Council For Divestment Wednesday. June 26th, 2002

Coordinated by the Coalition against Occupation and Apartheid (COA)

Posted June 18, 2002

The objective of divestment is to offer the government of Israel an economic incentive to obey International Law and ensure the Human Rights of all its citizens. Members of COA, have valiantly challenged the leadership of the City of Dallas in three public hearings to launch a fact finding mission into violations of U. S. and local laws because of the city's investments in Israel.

As you can well imagine resistance to our presence in the council chambers is growing and we are asking for your help.

The last public hearing before the summer recess is June 26. Council will reconvene Aug 14. We encourage members of the community to call and register to speak at the last public hearings before recess. The number to call is (214) 670-3738.

Five slots are available at 9:00 am on June 26 for Dallas residents only. Anyone can speak in the afternoon session. If you are a Dallas resident and would like to be on the TOP FIVE in the morning session, please call Thursday, June 20 Th. between 8:30 and 9:00 am. You can choose any topic pertaining to the situation in the occupied territories.

Besides speakers we need the presence of Palestinians and supporters in the chambers! There are more than 300 seats in the chambers. During our last visit, the mayor and two council members told us in straight forward terms they are not interested in our issue, that we should take our grievances to another forum. It would be interesting to see the looks on their faces if we are able to go back with 200 men, women and children! *

City Council : 1500 Marilla, Dallas, TX .( Across the street from Dallas Public Library). Parking is in the rear. Please go to 6th floor.

*If you are going to participate in the afternoon session please show up by 2:00 PM If you haven't attended city council meetings please be aware they are excruciatingly boring. You might be there for 5 hours or more. That is okay because the sight of 200 Palestinians and supporters sitting in the chambers is going to send a very important signal to our leadership. We are a part of this city, we are here to stay, we pay taxes and we want representation. So please come dressed comfortably and be prepared to just sit!

If you have any questions please call any of these folks. They will be glad to assist you:
