View Full Version : Real Player & Windows Media Player question

I have both the Windows Media Player and the free version of Real Player installed on my computer.

I used to have only Media Player before - thus video/audio files (if applicable) would obviously open with Media Player.

Then I downloaded Real Player (to view some files which apparently needed Real Player). RealPlayer then automatically became the application which would open/run whenever I clicked on e.g. internet audio/video to listen/view.

I want to view/listen to files in Windows Media Player sometimes - now how do I do that? I know there is the way where you save the file, e.g. on desktop, click 'open with' and choose Windows Media Player. But still, although some files do then open in Windows Player, they are still RealPlayer marked (although they are not ones that can only be viewed in RealPlayer). I can't save them or keep them as Windows player.

Basically, is there a way I can change from RealPlayer to Windows Media Player when I want to and vice-versa? Is this something to do with default settings? How can I change default settings (i.e.switching from Real to Windows) when I want to?

I hope all this makes sense! These computers are driving me round the bend!

Hopefully, someone out there can help? Please.

go to windows media player, go to options, then file types, and click all of them

real player tries to take over your computer and runs when you dont want it to, and it sends information from your computer over the internet

what abu said should work, but if real still trys to take over,go to the preferences in real player and there are options there which you can change the file types to open with WMP. Leave the .ram and .rm files and any other fiile that need real palyer, and change the .mp3 .wma .mpeg etc files to open with WMP

real player tries to take over your computer and runs when you dont want it to, and it sends information from your computer over the internetyeh sometimes lil pop up message come up, even when ur offline, u can disable that i think. i dont think it sends information from ur computer, but it sometime need to update to get the right codecs so it can paly certain files.

JazakAllah both for your advice. I have tried out both suggestions and found them to work - especially the instructions by Haqa about selecting preferences in RealPlayer.
