View Full Version : When will they announce the death of the Arabs? - Nizar Qabbani (excerpt)

For fifty years, I have been watching the state of the Arabs.
And they thunder, but never rain...
They enter wars, but never leave...
They keep chewing scraps of wisdom
But never digest it...

For fifty years, I have been trying to draw a land
Called - remarkably - the land of the Arabs;
I drew sometimes in the colour of arteries
And sometimes in the colour of anger.
And when the drawing was finished, I asked myself:
If someday they announced the death of the Arabs...
Then where would they be buried?
And who would cry over them?
They have no daughters...
They have no sons...
And there is no grief,
And there is no one to grieve!!
