Salams, I'll be heading to Karachi this summer. First time since 1993, so it's been roughly a decade. Is there anything I should keep in mind?
I'm planing to see some good masjids in the area, do you guys know any exceptional ones?
Thanks.

Ohhh wow mashaAllah. :D
Seems like everyone I know is heading off abroad for the hols. :)
I have never been to Pak, my mind conjures up images of rickshaws, cows and people on a crowded street. :D (darn those stories my cousins told me! :p )
Keep your passport hidden, and act like a desi...that is the best advice I can give you. ;) :D

Hmm...shouldn't be too hard. ;)
But after 10 years, you never know. Might be called an 'ABCD'

From my experience in Sri Lanka, that is very good advice. Keep that foreign accent well hidden, or you'll be hugely overcharged by shopkeepers.

:rotfl: Oh ok!
That reminds me, I better brush up on my Urdu. I read Urdu like a one word/minute.

Hey Baba, I rarely see you around to forums man. You ought rhyme in that that "bored" tread man. You where good, beta. :)
So, go on about your experiences in Sri Lanka...I wanna hear more.
Lol I'll come up with some more rhymes inshaAllah when I get time, exams are still going on for me at the moment.
Anyway in Sri Lanka, I was mobbed my loads of my cousins, who all knew me, but I did not know some of them... and that was kinda embarrassing, especially when they asked whether I remembered them, and whether I could remember their names lol!
Another fun thing was answering my auntie's phone in a posh English accent, and explaining to the surprised callers that my auntie had hired a new butler from England (me). They were like "wow she's got an English butler!!!!" lol :D
its best to take some1 local to do your shopping with u. they know the prices and can def smell a dodgy deal.
hwever, despite u speaking the language, the way u walk etc they can still tell ur not 'native'. i think they all have radars !

Lol, must be frusterating to see some guy you don't remember asking you if you know his name. Might be something they might ask me...better brush up on relatives.
Oh, and lol at butler!
:D :D

Maybe I can pretend that I have a sore throat and can't talk...hmm not a bad idear...
Something tells me I'm going to be the butt of all jokes in Karachi:mad: :freedom: :badguy:
I totally know how ya feel. I'm also going overseas in about a month insha Allah, to visit my relatives and I'm a bit nervous about having to converse with them. I can perfectly understand them, and although I do speak arabic at home, I mix english words in my sentences all the time :p But ya know what, it should be okay. I'm sure your relatives will be so happy to see you that they may not even bother making fun ;)

Ohhhh it must be SO exciting! :D
How long are you going for? Make sure you get me a prezzie (no, not paan  ) and pack the mosquito repellent! :D
Sallaam
Yeah i have some advice, whenever your visiting any country in the sub continent fart as often as you like because the place most likely stinks anyway.

No it doesn't. In the countryside, where most of the subcontinent is based upon, there is beauty and serenity everywhere. So much more different from the polution-populated West.
Ahmed, whenever you get a chance to visit the subcontinent, dare not go to the City. Head over to the countryside, and feel the tranquility and serenity radiating inside.
I have been living in the subcontinent all my life. And the beauty radiates my heart closer to Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He.
yeah if u get a chance brother go to swat its beautiful. and If u want to go further goto Kalam u'll love it waterfalls and mountains its wonderful

I think I'll be back July 28. LOL, I can't mail you the pretzel Ze, it will most likely decay by the time it reaches your doorstep.
Your idea about the mosquito repellent reminded me that I should pack mosquito repellent. But then again, I have develped an immunity to mosquito bites (at least to the American breed).

LOL! I'll keep that in mind when I go to eat at Sabiri Nihari. Inshallah.

Sorry kiddo. I live in the city, there is no escaping the city. Besides, they serve "rainbow juice" there. :D

The only waterfalls I will see will probably be at "Aladdin Waterpark". :( But fun none the less.
22 hour airplain ride...but guess what! I'll be stoping by Birmingham Airport (in England)! And that will be the closest I will get to many of my Ummah pals :(.

Ooo how long is your stopover? :D
Hey maybe I won't need to FedEx that kebab after all...

Ok Tashin, i will change what i say. My new point of view is this. My time in the subcontinent i found its odur to be offensive. I am speaking from experience, your thoughts of polution - populated west, they from experience as well?

Anywhooo, the stop over will probably be for refueling and to board/unload passengers. I think I'll be on the same plane? So if you wanna come aboard, I'll tell you the flight number, lol.

Ha!
Well take advantage of the Duty Free :D I'd prolly hide in the luggage compartment and get a flight to Pak ;) Only to be sent home on landing...
...All for free.

Did you hear about the dude who shipped himself to his parents in a crate? Spent 3 days in there...must have been good at doing a fetus curl, ouch!
Anywhoo, I'd advise you to bring some Brit pounds or something. Paki officials are easy to bribe, lol!

May Allah (swt) inshallah make your journey enjoyable and return you safely to your family. May you profit both in your knowledge and in your experience. May your soul gain from the depth and beauty of all that your eye beholds.

Ze, Mariam, IG, Xman, Anna, and JJ (as well as the rest of you who did dua) thanks.
I'm back from Pak >lol<. It has been a very, very, enlightening experience that I will never forget.
When you leave a privileged American suburb and step into a third-world nation, your world is turned upside down. Its sooooooo different here, just about everything, right down to which side of the car the steering wheel is on.
I'll tell you all about my trip later in the General forum, perhaps.

I really want to relate my experiences to you all. But I feel that if I do, I will become nostalgic about my jolly old cousins and of the chicken tikka, and of the pollution and smoke (I'm starting to miss that too!)
But no matter, I will go on.:freedom: The show must go on! And no shesh kabob, nor biryani will stop me..................................on second thought, perhaps a nihari would.
I'm make a thread soon, you'll know where to find it.
