Most pay-as-you-go phones are locked. I haven't heard of anyone breaking their phone from trying to unlock it, so it should be fine.

Anna if you type in the code generated and it says code error your phone is probably already unlocked.

Unlocking your phone means that you are free to use any sim card from any network operator in your phone. AT&T, Vodafone sims etc

Contract phones aren't usually locked. Pay-as-you-go phones usually are.

if you mess with the password function too many times, you burn out your sims card and you have to call your phone company for them to give you a new code

:salams. :)

I use a much better software, a wonderful utility:

http://www.unlockme.co.uk/

It can unlock phone providers in over hundred countries; even GrameenPhone of my Bangladesh was up there. The official site needs a update though, because the utility can unlock all types of Nokia, and other brands of the Siemens and Panasonic brand, even though the site states otherwise. I recommend it completely. :)

That refers to the SIM card PIN. It happened to my brother once when my nephew was playing with his phone, he had to phone up and get a "PUK" number from the phone company to get the phone working again.

But this discussion is about the unlocking a phone from a certain network... messing up here is unlikely to cause anything worse than an error message.
