Protest Rally Against Sharon’s Visit to London
Thursday, June 13 2002 @ 05:16 PM GMT
LONDON: The Palestinian Solidarity Campaign were holding a protest demonstration against Wednesday’s visit to London by Israeli leader Ariel Sharon. Peace activists, human rights groups and several MPs have called for Sharon to be put on trial for war crimes committed in Lebanon in 1982 and for the recent massacres at Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank.
The protest, which is also highlighting the continuing sale of British arms to Israel, was being held outside 10 Downing Street, while Sharon was holding talks with Prime Minister Tony Blair on his way back from the US.
Blair has been more outspoken in expressing support for Israel’s repeated incursions of territory administered by the Palestinian Authority. But according to the Times newspaper Wednesday, his talks with Sharon were being overshadowed by a row over police cooperation.
Four Israeli police spokesmen were due to make a week-long trip to England and Northern Ireland to learn how the British police deal with public relations and the media, particularly in regard to terrorism and other emergencies.
But the daily reported that the visit had been called off by Israel after Britain refused to allow the inclusion of an officer serving in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
