Im only 18 now, I work a low paying job, not done with high school, but im afraid once I graduate I will never see this girl again since I never see her outside of school. Is there a way to get engaged really early and then marry like 5 years later? what is the tradition behind muslims getting married?

Salam Khalid
Engagement is a promise. It's the first step that two people take when they seriously have plans to get married. If its part of your destiny for you to marry that Girl you'll InshaAllah. Some people get engaged and they wait till they can get married, but Only Allah knows if they will. You'll not miss what Allah already wanted you to have before you were even born.
TaWak'Allah
Good luck

The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon his soul, always used to advise Muslims to marry young ... as it increases responsibility and fidelity. :)

hmm... just be careful if u have a 5 yr engagement, that u dont spend 2 much time w/ each other & everything, because ur still not her mahram til you've done your nikaah.
In my opinion, if you can get both your parents to agree and everything, its better to do the nikah earlier, n it will keep the whole thing Halal n make it a lot easier on u, even if u dont move in together until later...
I don't know... talk to your parents, make instikhara... :)
