In some Islamic circles there is a term "Equipoise". This is the state one attains when one masters the inner and outer aspects of life, and functions in the world, performing good "Works" for the benefit of all mankind.
The Native American People put it simply. The Circle of Life has Four Directions. (This is the Compass of Life). The East represents Vision and Clairty and its' emblematic creature is the Eagle with its sharp vision. The South represents, Truth,Love, Innocence and Trust, and its' embematic creature is the Mouse. The West represnts Introspection, and its' embematic creature is the Bear. The North represents Wisdom, and its' embematic creature is the Buffalo.
The refining of these four elements and striking a balance both within and without (spirit and body) is The Path of The Human Being. This is their "Medicine Wheel". To be on the Path of becoming a Whole Human Being is the highest medicine.
Islamically speaking, when one attains equipoise, one attains true power coupled with true humility. You are "in" the world but not "of" it. Sort of, but not exactly, like the difference between objectivity and subjectivity. Rather, it is a balance, which endows one with empathy for all of Creation.
Let me use a similitude. It is as if Allau ta'ala encompasses the Beloved, the Lover, and the Love, for He is Love itself. When someone wounds the beloved, the lover reacts strongly toward the agressor. When someone attacks the Din of the Creator, the believers' heart naturally recoils from the agressor. When the beloved is harmed or killed, the lovers' heart is full of rage and revenge. These are the human emotions which we seek to transmute into a higher consciousness. But do not call it moderation. Moderation is only a tool to rise beyond the pain of suffering...to reach the state of the Sublime - which is something without time or place - It just Is.
Some people may perceive it to be arrogance of a sort, but it is not. Arrogance is negative and demeaning in nature. Those who attain such high grades of consciousness wish all could see, know and attain this beautiful equipoise. They extend an open invitation.
Allahu ta'ala placed makind on the earth to be His Khalifas(protectors) over His Creation. That is His Gift to us. To establish this Khalifat, all the elements to maintain the balance of Peace and Harmony must be in place. In the present "Dark Ages" of our Human Spirit, it is indeed a Great Work that needs to be done, and that requires Strong Medicine to heal our wounded hearts.
