The average computer is packed with hidden software that can secretly spy on online habits, a study has found.

The US net provider EarthLink said it uncovered an average of 28 spyware programs on each PC scanned during the first three months of the year.

Spyware is a broad term for programs that hide on a person's computer without their knowledge.

It has become so pervasive that lawmakers in the US are looking into ways to prevent or regulate it.

Hidden away

The Spy Audit by EarthLink reflects the results of scans involving over one million computers between January and March.

It uncovered more than 29.5 million examples of spyware. These are parasite programs sometimes come attached to software downloaded from the web.

The details are often included in the license agreement small print that most users click through without reading.

But sometimes they do not even need your permission to download, but just bury themselves on a hard drive as you browse the net.

With the exception of pop-up ads or a slower computer, people may not notice anything different when spyware programs are present, say experts.

Insidious software

EarthLink said the most common type of spyware it found was adware. These are programs that display ads on an infected computer and also send data about surfing habits.

But it also found examples of more insidious spyware.

"While most spyware is adware-related and relatively benign, it's disturbing that over 300,000 of the more serious system monitors and Trojans were uncovered," said Matt Cobb of EarthLink.

"This figure represents how real a threat identity theft or system corruption is for users."

System monitors can surreptitiously watch what you do, steal personal information and despatch it across the web, while Trojans can allow malicious hackers to get access to a computer and steal information.

"By tracking and publicising the growth of spyware, we can better educate consumers of its risks and encourage them to take steps to protect themselves and their families while online," said Christine Stevenson of Webroot, which conducted the scans.

People concerned about what might be lurking on their machine can download software such as the popular SpyBot to disinfect their computer.

Salaam

Also, those who receive virus messages, please chech the headers of the message. From these you can find the originating IP address, and using http://www.arin.net/whois/index.html to find the ISP of the person whose PC is infected.

(ARIN may in turn refer you to another registry such as RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, etc.)

Once you find the ISP, let their abuse dept. know, and they will contact their customer.

Peace
G.

Again some emails have been infected with viruses and Hackers have hacked them, due to that we might be getting rubbish web links in email.

Don't be offensive to others, whose email has been hacked, because of this matter. Hackers can hack any ones email and play with it. Allah will give punishment to these hackers and virus creators. Some matters we must have to leave on Allah till we get final solution.

Advise to all Moderators of the Islaamic Groups on Internet:

Please put all members including you on moderate.

Remove the facility of file attachments in emails.
Advise to all Members:

Please check your system for viruses and keep up-to-date your antivirus.
To minimize the risk of viruses, please do not add to your email address list / email contact list, since most of the viruses looks to your address list / contact list. Instead you can create a text file.
Virus / Bugs Cleaning from Computer

Even other Antivirus Software is not able to Clean it:

Be careful on downloading of any file, which starts with an icon HEART and file extension .scr, .pif, .exe, .com etc.

Heart could be of color BLUE, ORANGE etc. New viruses are always around, be careful.

Never ever open any attachments until you are very sure even it is from the person you know.

You can try New Updated Mcfee Antivirus from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger, or Norton Antivirus. It may miss some BUGs.

Here is one of the trick to remove the BUGs / Viruses:

Go to:

C:\WINDOWS\system32

or

C:\WINNT\system32

Search for .scr

If you find any file starts with icon Heart and extension .scr just delete it, including WinServices.Scr. Here is the lists of some attached virus files:

BUT Don’t delete other files, which don’t have HEART symbol.

Body_Building.scr

Codeproject.scr

Free_Love_Screensavers.scr

Hacker_The_LoveStory.scr

Hardcore4Free.scr

I_Love_You.scr

Jenna_Jemson.scr

Peace.scr

Playboy.scr

Never heard of that one before!

Also use Ad-aware or Spybot. They are known to be good.

Popups can be eliminated through many programmes, some of which are listed in the following link. I use EMS Free surfer mk II, which is one of the best.

spybot and adaware are both rated very good (free at download.com) Problem; they take out all the spyware from kazaa & morphus and then k&m won't work anymore. Anybody know a way around that?

Don't get carried away with notifying the abuse dept of the email's originating headers. With some of the recent worms/virus they hijack an innocent party's pc to send out spam to the address book inhabitants. In most cases they are unaware of it.

And don't forget that linux is an alternative to ms windows and is less frequented by these problems.
