Title of Fatwa Singing & Music: Islamic View
Date of Fatwa 13/ January/ 2004
Date of Reply 13/ January/ 2004
Topic Of Fatwa Music
Question of Fatwa As-Salamu `alaykum! In his fatwa " Does Islam Go against Laughter? ", Sheikh Yusuf `Abdullah Al-Qaradawi stated that when Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq (may Allah be pleased with him) tried to stop two young girls from singing in the Prophet’s house, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him: 'Let it be, for we are now in the feast.'

However, Sheikh Qaradawi did not refer to the following hadiths: Ibn Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to swear by Allah that the ayah "And of mankind is he who purchases idle talk to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah . . .” (Luqman: 6) referred to singing. Abu ‘Amir and Abu Malik al-Ash`ari (may Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Among my Ummah will be those who make permissible al-hira (adultery), silk, khamr and musical instruments . . .” (Reported by al-Bukhari; see al-Fath, 10/51). Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “In this Ummah there will be punishments of earthquakes, showers of stones and deformity (transformation into animals); that will be when the people drink khamr, listen to female singers and play musical instruments.” (See al-Silsilah as-Saheehah, 2203; attributed to Ibn Abid-Dunya, Dhamm al-Malahi; the hadith was narrated by at-Tirmidhi, no. 2212).

Also, Sheikh Qaradawi did not mention the following facts: It is reported in a Sahih hadith that the Prophet's laughter was never more than a smile. (Reported by Ahmad) According to another hadith, he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to remain silent for long periods, and laugh little. (Reported by Ahmad) ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughing so heartily that his back teeth showed; he would only smile.” (Reported by Abu Dawud)

Now, don't the readers have the right to know the other side of the coin too? But then again, perhaps I am wrong about it. I would however, appreciate it, if the fatwa issuer could reply to my objections. Wassalam

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

First of all, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you have in us. We hope our efforts meet your expectations.

Given that your objection revolves mainly around music and why it is permissible, here is the clarification for that in the light of fatwa issued by Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi:

The whole issue of singing is controversial, whether it is with musical accompaniment or not. Some issues succeeded to gain the Muslim scholars’ agreement, while others failed. All scholars have unanimous view on the prohibition of all forms of singing and music that incites debauchery, indecency, or sin. As for musical instruments, given the weakness of the evidence indicating that they are forbidden, the rule to be applied here is the one states that all things are originally deemed permissible as long as there is no Shari`ah text that prohibits them.

Singing is no more than melodious words; if these are good, singing is considered good; but if they are bad, such singing is deemed bad. Talk that contains forbidden content is prohibited. What if that talk is accompanied with rhythm and melody?

Scholars agree on the permissibility of singing without instrumental accompaniment and where the content is not prohibited. This sort of singing is allowed only in certain occasions such as: weddings, feasts, welcoming a traveler, and the like. This is based on the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) that states: “He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, ‘Have you given the girl (i.e., the bride) anything as a present?’ They (the attendants) replied, ‘Yes.’ He asked, 'Did you send a singer along with her?' 'No', said `A'ishah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then said, 'The Ansar are a people who love poetry. You should have sent along someone who would sing: Here we come, to you we come, greet us as we greet you.'" In this case, we can say that a woman can sing only in front of women and her non-marriageable male kin.

In the subject of musical instruments, scholars disagree on the matter. Some of them permit all sorts of singing, be it accompanied with musical instruments or not, and even consider it recommended. A second group of scholars permit singing only when is not accompanied with a musical instrument. A third group declare it to be prohibited whether it be accompanied with a musical instrument or not; they even consider it as a major sin. In supporting their view, they cite the hadith narrated by Imam Al-Bukhari on the authority of Abu Malik or Abu `Amir Al-Ash`ari (doubt from the sub-narrator) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk (clothes), the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful.' Although this hadith is in Sahih Al-Bukhari, its chain of transmission is not connected to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and this invalidates its authenticity. Ibn Hazm rejects it for that very reason. Moreover, the sub-narrator, Hisham Ibn `Ammar is declared ‘weak’ by many scholars of the Science of Hadith Methodology.

Besides, this hadith does not clearly prohibit the use of musical instruments, for the phrase 'consider as lawful,' according to Ibn Al-`Arabi, has two distinct meanings:

First: Such people think all these (the things mentioned) are lawful.

Second: They exceed the proper limits that should be observed in using these instruments. If the first meaning is intended, such people would be thus disbelievers.

In fact, the hadith in hand dispraises the manners of a group of people who indulge themselves in luxuries, drinking alcohol and listening to music. Therefore, Ibn Majah narrates this hadith from Abu Malik Al-Ash`ari in the following wording: "From among my followers there will be some people who will drink wine, giving it other names while they listen to musical instruments and the singing of female singers; Allah the Almighty will make the earth swallow them and will turn them into monkeys and pigs.” (Reported by Ibn Hibban in his Sahih)

Conclusion on Permissibility of Musical Instruments

In the light of the above, it is clear that the religious texts that stand as a basis for those who maintain that singing is haram are either ambiguous or inauthentic. None of the hadiths attributed to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is valid as evidence on the judgment of prohibition. Moreover, all these hadiths are declared ‘weak’ by the followers of Ibn Hazm, Malik, Ibn Hanbal, and Ash-Shafi`i.

In his book, Al-Ahkam, Al-Qadi Abu Bakr Ibn Al-`Arabi says, “None of the hadiths maintaining that singing is prohibited are considered authentic (by the scholars of the Science of Hadith Methodology).” The same view is maintained by Al-Ghazali and Ibn An-Nahwi in Al-`Umdah. Ibn Tahir says, “Not even a single letter from all these Hadiths was proved to be authentic.”

Ibn Hazm says, “All the hadiths narrated in this respect were invented and falsified.”

Proofs of Those Who Maintain that Singing is Halal:

First: The Textual Proofs:

They base their argument on some authentic hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). One of these hadiths is the following:

`A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: “Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him, came to my house while two girls were singing beside me the songs of Bu`ath (a story about the pre-Islamic war between the two tribes of the Ansar, the Khazraj and the Awus). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laid down and turned his face to the other side. Then Abu Bakr came and spoke to me harshly saying, ‘Musical instruments of Satan near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?’ Thereupon, Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face towards him and said, ‘Leave them.’ When Abu Bakr became inattentive, I signaled to those girls to go out and they left.” (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

This indicates that these two girls were not so young as claimed by some scholars. If they were, Abu Bakr would not have been angry with them in such manner. In addition, in this hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to teach the Jews that Islam has room for merriment and that he himself was sent with a moderate and flexible legislation. There is also another important lesson to learn here. It draws our attention to the fact that one needs to introduce Islam to others in a good fashion, along with displaying its moderateness and magnanimity.

Moreover, we can also cite as corroborating this Allah’s words that read, “But when they spy some merchandise or pastime they break away to it and leave thee standing. Say: That which Allah hath is better than pastime and than merchandise, and Allah is the best of providers.” (Al-Jumu`ah: 11)

In this verse, Allah Almighty joins pastime with merchandise. He does not dispraise any of them, He just only rebuked the Companions who left Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) alone giving the khutbah (Friday Sermon), when they all rushed to attend to the caravan and beating of the drums celebrating its arrival.

Second: In Respect of Islam’s Spirit and Basics:

It is a fact that Allah had prohibited for the Children of Israel some of the good things of this worldly life as a punishment for their misdeeds.

He says, “Because of the wrongdoing of the Jews, We forbade them good things which were (before) made lawful unto them, and because of their much hindering from Allah's way. And of their taking usury when they were forbidden it, and of their devouring people's wealth by false pretences. We have prepared for those of them who disbelieve a painful doom.” (An-Nisa’: 160-161)

Before sending Prophet Muhammad, He Almighty referred to him in the earlier scriptures as, “Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, whom they will find described in the Torah and the Gospel (which are) with them. He will enjoin on them that which is right and forbid them that which is wrong. He will make lawful for them all good things and prohibit for them only the foul.” (Al-A`raf: 157)

Thus, Islam left nothing good or sound but declared it to be halal (lawful). This is a sign of mercy to this Ummah (nation or community), moving along the line of its comprehensive and eternal message. Allah Almighty says, “They ask you (O Muhammad) what is made lawful for them. Say: (all) good things are made lawful for you.” (Al-Ma’idah: 4)

If we are to delve deeply into this matter, we will find that love for singing and melodic voices are almost a human instinct. We can observe an infant lying in his cradle soothed and sleeping by the sound of a lullaby. Mothers and nannies are always in the habit of singing for babies and children. Moreover, birds and animals respond to nice voices and rhythmic melodies.

Thereupon, if singing is thus a human instinct, it is not for Islam to defy humankind’s instincts. Islam came to refine and promote the human instinct. Ibn Taymyiah says, “Prophets were sent to polish and discipline man’s instinct and not to change or modify it.” This is pursuant to the hadith that reads, “When Allah’s Messenger came to Madinah, he found them (i.e., the people of Madinah) celebrating two days. He said, ‘What are these days?’ They replied, ‘We used to rejoice in these days during the pre-Islamic era.’ He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Verily, Allah Almighty has given you two alternative days which are much better: these are Al-Adha and Al-Fitr days (`Eids).’” (Reported by Ahmad, Abu Dawud and An-Nasa’i)

Moreover, if singing is to be considered rejoicing and play, these are not haram; this is in pursuant to the famous idea that man needs some time to relax a bit and rejoice. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Hanzalah who thought himself to be a hypocrite for his attendance to his wife and children and the change that affected him when he was apart from Allah’s Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), “O Hanzalah! Part of your time should be devoted (to the worldly affairs) and part of time (should be devoted to prayer and meditation).” (Reported by Muslim)

`Ali Ibn Abu Talib says, “Amuse yourselves for some time, for if hearts are exposed to too much strain, they turn blind.”

Abu Ad-Darda’ said, “I refresh myself with some amusement in order to make myself stronger on the path of right.”

Imam Al-Ghazali answered someone who asked him: “Isn't singing some kind of play and rejoice?” He said, “Yes. But, all that exists in this present life is mere play and rejoice. All that takes place between a husband and his wife is play, except sexual intercourse that is the direct cause of reproducing children. This has been reported from Allah’s Messenger and his honorable Companions.”

In fact, leisure time is refreshing to the heart and alleviates its tensions at the same time. Excessive strain and efforts render the heart bored and blind. Amusing the self refreshes and renews its strength and vigor. One who continuously works hard at something should take a break for a while in order to restore and regain his energy and firm will lest he totally collapses in future. When one takes a break, he thus restores his strength and vigor. Only Prophets can stand absolute seriousness. Having leisure time is a form of treatment for diseases of the self, weariness and boredom. But, leisure should not be excessive. This will go against the whole issue of rejoicing hearts to make them able to go on.

One who is familiar with and experienced in the nature of the human heart and self knows for certain that recreation and relaxation are necessary treatments for one’s well-being.

These proofs on the permissibility of singing are extracted from the texts and rules of Islam, and these are sufficient to clarify the issue.

In addition to this, the people of Madinah, who were very pious and God-fearing, the Zahiriyyah, who were very literal regarding the textual proofs, and the Sufis, who were very strict and rigid, were all quoted to have declared the permissibility of singing.

Imam Ash-Shawkani says in his book “Nayl Al-Awtar”, “The people of Madinah and those who agreed with them from among the Zahiriyyah and the Sufis maintain that singing is permissible, even when it is accompanied by a musical instrument such as the lute or the flute. Abu Mansur Al-Bughdadi Ash-Shafi`i narrate that `Abdullah Ibn Ja`far saw nothing wrong in singing, and he, himself, used to compose the music for his own slaves who used to sing these melodies in his presence. This took place during the time of Commander of the Faithful, `Ali Ibn Abi Talib. Abu Ja`far Al-Bughdadi narrates the same after Al-Qadi Shurayh, Sa`id Ibn Al-Musaiyb, `Ata’ Ibn Abu Rabah, Az-Zuhri and Ash-Shi`bi.”

Ar-Ruwaiyani narrates on the authority of Al-Qaffal that Malik Ibn Anas maintained that singing with musical instruments is permissible. Also, Abu Mansur Al-Furani quotes Malik as maintaining that playing the flute is permissible.

Abu Al-Fadl Ibn Tahir narrates, “The people of Madinah never disputed over the permissibility of playing the lute.”

Ibn An-Nahwi narrates in his “Al-`Umdah”: “Ibn Tahir said, ‘The people of Madinah showed consensus over this (issue). Also, all the Zahiriyyah maintained the same.'”

Al-Mawardi attributes the permissibility of playing the lute to some of the Shafi`i followers and students. This has been narrated also by Abu Al-Fadl Ibn Tahir after Abu Ishaq Ash-Shirazi; and it is narrated by Al-Isnawi after Ar-Ruwaiyani and Al-Mawardi. Again, this is narrated by Al-Adfuwi after Sheikh `Izz Ad-Deen Ibn `Abd As-Salam. It is also narrated after Abu Bakr Ibn Al-`Arabi.

All these scholars consider singing that is accompanied by musical instruments permissible, but as for singing that is not accompanied by musical instruments, Al-Adfuwi says, “In some of his jurisprudence-related books, Al-Ghazali narrates the consensus of the scholars on its permissibility." Also, Ibn Tahir narrates the consensus of the Prophet’s Companions and those who succeeded them on this very topic. Ibn An-Nahwi states in Al-`Umdah that singing and listening was deemed permissible by a group of the Companions and the Followers.

Conditions and Terms:

There are some conditions and terms that should be observed regarding listening to singing, as follows:

1. Not all sorts of singing are permissible. Rather, the permissible song should comply with the Islamic teachings and ethics. Therefore, the songs praising the tyrants and corrupt rulers disagree with Islamic teachings. In fact, Islam stands against transgressors and their allies, and those who show indifference to their transgression. So, the same goes for those songs that imply giving praises to such attitude!

2. Also, the way the song is performed weighs so much. The theme of the song may be good, but the performance of the singer – through intending excitement and arousing others’ lusts and desires along with trying to seduce them – may move it to the area of prohibition, suspicion or even detest. The Glorious Qur’an addresses the wives of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saying, “O you wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep your duty (to Allah), then be not soft of speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease aspire (to you), but utter customary speech." (Al-Ahzab: 32) So, one has to show caution to music when there is softness of speech accompanied with rhyme, melody, and special effects!

3. Singing should not be accompanied with something that is prohibited such as alcohol, nakedness, mixing of men with women that is common in pubs and nightclubs, etc.

4. Islam has declared excessiveness as prohibited in everything. The same goes for excessiveness in leisure and recreation even though these things are permissible ! This indicates that the emptiness of the mind and heart has to be observed and tackled during man’s short-term life. One should know that Allah Almighty will ask every one about his life and his youth in particular.

There are some things in which one is to be his own judge and Mufti. If there is some kind of singing that arouses his own lust or desire, and takes him away from the real life, he should avoid it then and block that very gate from which the winds of trial and seduction may come and erase his religion, morals and heart. If he does this, he will live in peace and tranquility.

Warning against playing with the word “haram”

To conclude, we address the respectful scholars who tackle the word “haram” easily and set it free in their writings and fatwas that they should observe that Allah is watching over them in all that they say or do. They should also know that this word “haram” is very dangerous. It means that Allah’s Punishment is due on a certain act or saying, and should not be based upon guessing, whims, weak Hadiths, not even through an old book. It has to be supported by a clear, well-established text or valid consensus. If these last two are not found, then we revert the given act or saying to the original rule: "permissibility governing things". We do have a good example to follow from one of our earlier pious scholars. Imam Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “It was not the habit of those who preceded us, the early pious Muslims, who set good example for the following generations, to say, 'This is halal, and this is haram. But, they would say, ‘I hate such-and-such, and maintain such-and-such, but as for halal and haram, this is what may be called inventing lies concerning Allah. Did not you hear Allah’s Statement that reads, 'Say: Have you considered what provision Allah has sent down for you, how you have made of it lawful and unlawful? Say: Has Allah permitted you, or do you invent a lie concerning Allah?” (Yunus: 59) For, the halal is what Allah and His Messenger made lawful, and the haram is what Allah and His Messenger made unlawful.

Some one posed this question on a live fatwah session of Islam-online.net.

Question As-Salamu `alaykum. I heard from some friends that a person – who was addict to music and singing – kept on singing and listening to music just before his death to the extent that he cannot say shahadah, although someone asks him to say it. Does this show that music is haram? Jazakum Allah khayran.

Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Music has been a subject of controversy and disagreement among the scholars of the past and present. While some scholars, like Ibn Taymiyyah, forbid all kinds of music except using the duff (tambourine) in marriage ceremony, other scholars such as Imam Al-Ghazali and Ibn Hazm differentiate between two kinds of music, one is haram and one is halal. The latter view seems to be the most authentic. You cannot judge any type of music as halal or haram unless you are aware of the words that the people are singing, the circumstances and the consequences that it might lead to. So, if the music will lead to inciting desires and making the people forget about their prayers and acts of worship, it is definitely haram; while if it teaches good manners it cannot be counted as haram.

However, at the time of death, the Muslim is not supposed to listen to music. At the time of death he or she needs to listen to Allah’s words and seek forgiveness before breathing the last breath. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “People will be judged according to their last actions in this life.” So, a Muslim should try to do as many good deeds as he or she can at the time of death.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A lot of people think that they can do all sort of things and then when death comes they can simply say the Shahadah and all will be fine. What they do not realize is that Allah (swt) can seal their heart and that they would not able to say the Shahadah if they lived their lives in disobediance to Him (saw). I heard several stories like this and one of our Imaams while studying in Madinah said he saw something like this twice where in both cases someone was dieing and they kept singing even when the family members were encouraging them to say the Shahadah. These are people who loved music and singing. In one case he said when the family tried to play a tape with the Quranic recitation the man would screem and say that it was hurting his head badly and he would beg to listen to songs of Umm Khaltuum, a famous Arab singer. La hawla wa la quwatah illa billah. May Allah (swt) protect us from that. Ameen.

Music, Songs, Novels, Movies & Theaters

Prohibition of Music, Songs and Movies According to Quraan and Sunnah

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, songs, poetry, stories, novels, movies, theaters, dramas etc.) to mislead from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, the Verses of the Quraan) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-Fire). [Al_Quraan_031.006]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And excite [befool them gradually] any of them whom you can with your voice (i.e. music, songs, poetry, stories, novels, movies, theaters, dramas and other call for Allah's disobedience), and urge their horse and foot against them, and be a partner in their wealth and children, and promise them. Satan promises them only to deceive. [Al_Quraan_017.064]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks, and the use of musical instruments as lawful. And (from them), there will be some who will stay near the side of a mountain, and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and Allah will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection." [Hadith - Bukhari 7:494]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Day of Resurrection draws near, None besides Allah can avert it, (or advance it, or delay it). Do you then wonder at this recital (the Quraan)? And you laugh at it and weep not, Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (i.e. music, songs, poetry, stories, novels, movies, theaters, dramas etc.). So fall you down in prostration to Allah, and worship Him (Alone). [Al_Quraan_053.057-062]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Think how we are wasting out costly time. Think again how Satan has taken our expensive time. Why we don’t have time to think about the unity of Muslim Ummah and doing Dawah? One of the answers could be:

Music, songs, poetry, stories, novels, movies, theaters, dramas etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Action Items for the Muttaqun:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1> Get rid of those Indian, western and all other Music, songs CDs and Videos etc.

2> If you had a large music collection like a kafir has, have a collection just as large, but instead fill your library with Islamic Collections.

3> Think about how many hundreds or maybe even thousands of dollars you've spent on music CD’s, Videos and tapes that you could now spend on a home Islamic library.

4> Spend your valuable time studying Quraan, learning to perfect your Salaah, engaged in ibaadah and spreading dawah.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember... Allah, subhana watala, sees everything we do!

Assalamu Alaikum

Im musician 2. Many people said to me that music is certainly haram. I have done a research about music. Muslim scholars say "if it takes you away from Allah and recall bad things, it is certainly haram." Sufis use music in their dhikr. Just people can understand music. I experienced an event. I made a kind of classical music with my musical instrument. One of my friend said" had you played it longer, i would have quitted alcohol" I was glad to hear it from my friend.

Yusuf Islam wrote a good article about music. www.mountainoflight.co.uk (http://www.mountainoflight.co.uk)

you should look at it.

assalamualaykum!
i have a question, sorry if this has already been posted and sorry if it's in the wrong forum

but what are the rulings of islam for listening/playing music?

what about songs with no singing in them?

i'd guess Mohammed PBUH may have not made any direct rulings to this but please give support/evidence for you answers to hadiiths or the qur'aan

thank-you

thanks for the reply, it's a pressing issue for me

first of all i'll talk a bit about 'my' problem.
I don't like to listen to singing or indeed many songs, just playing a guitar i have bought years ago - this means i want to find out if playing guitar by myself in my room with possibly with some backgorund accompaniment - no singing/listening etc

ok from that and some google searches i'm sure there is no direct reference to rulings music or instruments whatsoever in the qur'aan

now from the hadiiths given i've found there is evidence for it to be haram
but in the internet there are sites which disagree with it such as this sight:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/2704/article8.html

some of the hadiiths there are the same ones from the links you generously gave me but were interpreted differently - and i found nearly all of them to be reffereing to music under conditioned circumstances

as far as i know, it does not stray me from the righteous path as i don't practise extensively
also it is little more than a hobby, nothing that invokes thoughts on my actions let alone influences them

now i absolutely agree that listening extensively and letting it take over your life is wrong (as proven in many hadiths), but what about my situaiton?
so is music allowed in certain amounts?

Hmm....opinions vary in this area. Half of the scholars consider music haraam and the other half consider it halal. To the best of my knowledge i know that a musical instrument that can be used is a duff (Drum).

About the guitar, im not so sure. You may have to ask some scholars about it.

Also, internet isnt usually the best place to start as some sites can be very misleading, so watch your step.

true but what if i do seach for an answer (like i'm doing) and fail to do so from other sources
- so i use my own judgment and interpretation of the hadiths to come to a conclusion that it is halal, although there is no hard evidence - will that still be haram? as then i'd be sure about it myself but know there's nothing directly proving it so i could be wrong though i'm sure i'm not

hope you know what i mean

I dont have any evidence right now for you but to the best of my knowledge string instruments are definitely not allowed (violins, guitars, etc) but like the sister advised if there is doubt u should leave it -- it's really not worth risking...

whilst trying to cut down on music I started checking other stuff I could listen to in the background to substitute for music... I came across some beautiful dua's in Arabic and usually have them playing at a low volume all day and night in my room... wallahi its a beautiful feeling all day and night especially whilst sleeping

I'm currently at university, and live on campus, I don't share a room, but my christian or well non-muslim friends come over a lot, and then ask, what is it that u are listening? one of my friends even said : "what's that horrible music u r listening to??" well, even with all that, i just said its NOT music, its reading from the Holy Qur'an. ......
well, just though to share the lil story with u, i dunno if anyone else faces the same situation, it is kinda hard living in this very int'l community of abt 700 students, and only abt 30muslims, and in those veeeeeeeery few girls, i'm not sure, mb 7 or so of us muslim girls.
anyways,
ma - salam!

According to the traditional Islam religion, you are not. But for instance in Iran, Muslims love music.

Music is prohibited!

Question :

I read an article by some writer which said that singing and music are permissible, and refuted those who say that these things are haraam. He encouraged the broadcasting of recordings by dead singers as a means to preserve their memory and the art that they produced during their lives and lest the living be deprived of listening to that art and seeing it. He said: There is no text in the Holy Qur’aan which forbids singing and music, and in the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) we have a good example, and he used to listen to singing and music, and enjoined them at Eid and on occasions such as marriage and other joyous occasions. Then he said: And there are da’eef (weak) ahaadeeth which some quote as evidence that singing and music are forbidden, but it is not right to attribute them to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in order to support an opinion or prevent something that some people do not agree with. Then he quoted the opinions of some of the scholars who say that singing is allowed.
Answer :

Praise be to Allaah. </SPAN>

The Standing Committee for Academic Research and Issuing Fatwas issued a statement refuting this article, the text of which is as follows:

The scholars of the Standing Committee said:

In refutation of these specious arguments the Committee has stated the following:

Firstly: it is not permissible for anyone to discuss matters of sharee’ah except scholars of sharee’ah who are specialized and qualified to research and examine issues. The writer of this article is not a seeker of shar’i knowledge (taalib ‘ilm) so it is not permissible for him to discuss something in which he is not specialized. Hence he has made many mistakes and said many ignorant things, and spoken about Allaah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) without knowledge. This is a sinful matter and is misguiding his readers. By the same token it is not permissible for the media – newspapers, magazines, etc – to give space to those who are not scholars of sharee’ah to discuss shar’i rulings and write about things that are not their specialty, so that the Muslims may be protected from their ideas and beliefs.

Secondly: Nothing can benefit the deceased after his death except that which is indicated by the shar’i evidence, such as the report in which the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When a man dies, his (good) deeds come to an end except three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge and a righteous son who will pray for him.” Narrated by Muslim, 1631. As for the sins that a person committed during his lifetime, and died without having repented from them – including singing – he will be punished for them unless Allaah forgives him for them by His Grace and kindness. So it is not permissible to resurrect them and revive them after he has died, lest that sin be added to the sins that he committed during his lifetime, because the harm of that extends to others, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever introduces a bad practice into Islam, the burden of that sin will be upon him, as will the sin of those who do it after him, without that detracting from their burden in the slightest.” Narrated by Muslim, 1017.

Thirdly: With regard to his comment that “There is no text in the Holy Qur’aan which forbids singing and music,” this reflects his ignorance of the Qur’aan. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah without knowledge, and takes it (the path of Allaah, or the Verses of the Qur’aan) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell‑fire)”

[Luqmaan 31:6]

The majority of mufassireen say that what is meant by Lahwa al-hadeeth (“idle talks”) in this verse is singing. Another group says that it is every sound of entertainment, which includes flutes, stringed instruments and so on. All of these mislead men from the path of Allaah and cause misguidance. It is proven that Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him), the great Sahaabi who was one of the scholars of the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) said, commenting on this verse: “By Allaah, this refers to singing.” And he said: “It causes hypocrisy to grow in the heart as water causes herbs to grow.”

And there are many ahaadeeth which point to the prohibition of singing and musical instruments and indicate that they are a means which leads to great evil and bad consequences. The great scholar Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah be pleased with him) discussed the rulings on singing and musical instruments in great detail in his book Ighaathat al-Lahfaan.

Fourthly: This writer tells lies about the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) by saying that he used to listen to songs and music and enjoined them at Eid and on occasions such as marriage and other joyous occasions. It is proven that he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) granted a dispensation to women only, when there are no men present, allowing them to beat the daff and sing nasheeds which are free of any mention of love or the music and instruments, which includes the permissive songs that exist nowadays. Rather he allowed nasheeds that are free of such offensive characteristics and he allowed beating the daff only, not other kinds of drums or musical instruments, to proclaim marriage. It is narrated in saheeh ahaadeeth, as in Saheeh al-Bukhaari, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade musical instruments of all types and issued stern warnings against them. It is narrated in Saheeh al-Bukhaari and other books of hadeeth that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There will be among my ummah people who will regard as permissible zina (adultery), silk, alcohol and ma’aazif (musical instruments). Some people will camp at the top of a mountain with their shepherd looking after their sheep, and a poor man will come and ask for something, and they will say, ‘Come back to us tomorrow.’ But Allaah will destroy them and level the mountain, and will turn others into monkeys and pigs until the Day of Resurrection.”

The word ma’aazif (translated above as musical instruments) refers to singing and all kinds of instruments. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) condemned those who regard as permissible zina (adultery), the wearing of silk for men and the drinking of alcohol, and who listen to singing and musical instruments. He mentioned that alongside zina, alcohol and the wearing of silk by men, which indicates that singing and musical instruments are emphatically forbidden.

Fifthly: With regard to this writer’s comment that there are da’eef (weak) ahaadeeth which some quote as evidence that singing and music are forbidden, but it is not right to attribute them to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in order to support an opinion or prevent something that some people do not agree with, this reflects his ignorance of the Sunnah, for the evidence that singing is forbidden is to be found partly in the Qur’aan and partly in Saheeh al-Bukhaari, as stated above, and partly in other books of Sunnah, which the earlier scholars used as evidence that singing and music are forbidden.

Sixthly: The opinion of some scholars who allow singing is an opinion that is refuted by the evidence which forbids that. The point here is that we should follow what the evidence says and not that which goes against it. We may take or leave the words of anyone except the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

This writer must repent to Allaah from what he has written, and he should nor speak about Allaah and His Messenger without knowledge, for speaking about Allaah without knowledge is mentioned alongside shirk in the Book of Allaah.

May Allaah help us all to learn the truth and follow it.

May Allaah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his family and companions.

From Al-Ghazzali On Listening to Music

"The reasoning by which pleasant things, play, and watching them are not forbidden is that Ayishah, may God be pleased with her, relates: "On the Day of the Festival the Africans were playing in the mosque. The Messenger saws asked me: "Do you want to see it?' I said: 'I do.' He stood by the door, his hand held out so that could place my chin on his. I watched so much that he asked me several times: "Is that not enough?' I said: 'no."

"Ayishah also relates that: "Two girls were playing tambourines and singing on the Day of the Festival. The Messenger saws came in and lay down on his bedding, facing the other direction. Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, arrived and was startled. He said: "Satan's flute in the house of the Messenger saws!" The Messenger said: 'O Abu Bakr, leave them alone, for it is the Day of the Festival." Therefore, it is clear from this tradition that playing tambourines and singing songs are not forbidden: indeed, they are permissible. There is no doubt but the sound had reached the Messenger's saws ears. His forbidding of Abu Bakr to stop those activites is clear proof that they are lawful."

"As for the hautboy (similar to the oboe), whether the bell is down or up, it is not forbidden as it was the habit of the shepherds to play them. Shafii, may God be pleased with him, says, "the proof that the hautboy is lawful is that when the sound of the hautboy came to the ears of the the Messenger saws, he put his fingers in his ears and said to Ibn Umar: 'Listen; when it is over let me know.' Therefore, he gave Ibn Umar permission to listen: that is the proof that it is lawful."

Ghazzali says that the Prophet saws was in a state so close to Allah that the music would only distract him from dhikr. For other people, it can excite their yearning for God and bring the person closer to God.

Ghazzali goes on to describe in detail what kind of music is permissible and what kind is impermissble. He says, "Whatever increases the love for God has a great reward."

"Performing the night formal paryer during Ramadan congregationally was instituted by Umar bin Khattab, may God be pleased with him; this innovation is good.' So, objectionable innovations are those whcih are in oppostition to a practice of the Prophet. A pleasing temperment and making people happy is praiseworthy in the Law."

Not Haram, do not worry. Whoever says it is, look them straight in the eye and tell them "You are a Hypocrit" because most people listen to music. Although lets be honest there is a lot of corruption in music but music is probably one of the best of ways to express one's self. but be careful not to make corruption like most music does.

i dont understand the muslim ummah. The evidence is clear. even an idiot can derive from quran and sunnah that music is totally forbidden in ISLAM!! No wonder, Prophet Muhammed saw predicted that a group of people will come and say that music is halal. Whatever music, all of it is haram. Those that wanna think rationally and worship their rational desires. GO AHEAD.

a brother said:
"You are a Hypocrit" because most people listen to music...

MOST PEOPLE ARE KAFFIR. MOST PEOPLE DONT PRAY. MOST PEOPLE HATE ISLAAM. DO WE FOLLOW THEM? NO! WE ONLY FOLLOW QURAN AND SUNNAH WHICH IS THE TRUTH! CALLING ANOTHER MUSLIM HYPOCRITE FOR FOLLOWING QURAN AND SUNNAH IS A BIG SIN. I THINK SOMEONE SHOULD :torture: YOU FOR SAYING THIS.

Music has been condemned strongly in the Qur?aan and Hadith. In Surah Luqmaan, Allah Ta?ala states, ?And from mankind are those that purchase futile speech in order to mislead others from the path of Allah.? Under the commentary of this verse, ibn Abbaas [Radhiallaahu anhu] states, ?futile speech? refers to music and things related to it. (Durrul Manthoor vol.5 pg.307). In Surah Israaeel, Allah Ta?ala states, ?And excite any of whom you can with your voice.? Imaam Mujaahid mentions, ?voice? refers to music. (Roohul Ma?aani) Nabi [Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam] mentions, ?There will be people from my Ummah who will seek to make lawful fornication, wearing of silk, wine and the use of musical instruments.? (Bukhaari vol.2 pg.837). Rasulullah [Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam] states, ?A group of my Ummah will drink wine calling it by other than its real name. merry will be made for them through the playing of musical instruments and by the singing of females. Allah will cleave the earth under them and turn them into apes and swines.? (Abu Dawud vol.2 pg.519) Rasulullah [Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam] further mentions, ?Music grows hypocrisy in the heart just as water causes crops to grow.? (Bayhaqi vol.10 pg.222). Thus, even conceding that there is benefit in such songs, the fact that music is clearly and expressly condemned in the Qur?aan and Hadith would make such songs Haraam. and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best Mufti Ebrahim Desai

i really think you are misunderstanding. I think you are right to a certain extent tho.

As far as i am aware music is only condemned in hadith! im sorry there is no
ayat in the quran which actually mentions music is TOTALLY haram like
it does with wine and interest and other harams where it is
clearly stated in the quran.

you mentioned "futile speech??" that could mean backbiting and gossiping
which also comes under futile speech again the quran does not say explicitly
that music is haram that is someones opinion and how he has
translated the quran.

Let us all remember that music is a language. it has its own place, and just
like all languages you can swear, backbite (futile speech) and use it in a
negative manner and also it can be used in a positive way aswell. So that
does not mean that music altogether is haram.

Although i agree with you that music if used in a negative is haram, just like
backbitingetc is, it dosent mean music altogether or to that effect speaking is
haram. Just like a language if used in a positive way it is allowed same with
music. Some music makes me remember Allah!

Thank you

thinks,
we are ahlel sunnah and dont follow only the quran but also the sunnah. ALLAH SAYS IN THE QURAN THAT: WE HAVE REVEALED THE QURAN AND THE AL HIKMAH (SUNNAH SHARIA AND SO ON).
ALLAAH SAYS FURTHER IN THE QURAN:
THE ONE THAT FOLLOWS MUHAMMED SAW HAS FOLLOWED ALLAAH.
(cant remember the surah but it is written in the quran several times).
Following the sunnah is mentioned 40 times in the quran. Mentioning it one time woudl be enough, but ALLAAH swt mentioned it 40 times in his holy book for people like you.

Haram music does not remind you of ALLAAH but of your nafs which likes haram music. as the brother said in the surah, music is compeletly haram. the cousin of the prophet Imaam shafi also mentioned the quran surah. all scholars of ahlel sunnah say that music is haram. for 1400 years we have been following that and now suddenly someone comes and says oh not you misinterpret everything differently and music is halal.

NO I DONT TOLERATE YOUR BELIEVES REGARDING MUSIC. WE ARE NOT WEsTERNERS THAT WE TOLERATE HARAM ACTIVITIES (SUCH AS LISTENING TO MUSIC). FORBID THE EVIL AND PROMOTE THE GOOD. ALL SCHOLARS OF AHLEL SUNNAH SAY THAT MUSIC IS HARAM. I HAVE NEVER EVER HEARD A SCHOLAR SAYING THAT IT IS HALAL. ALL SCHOLARS HAVE PROVIDED SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE FROM QURAN AND SUNNAH FOR A MUSLIM TO BELIEVE THAT MUSIC IS HARAM. IF YOU THINK MUSIC IS NOT HARAM AND CONTINUE TO LISTEN TO IT EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE SHOWN YOU THE EVIDENCE THEN YOU ARE IGNORANT.

i respect your opinion and i hope you can respect mine. Lets agree to disagree.

I DONT NEED YOU TO RESPECT MY OPINION SINCE IT IS NOT MY OPINION BUT THE OPINION OF OUR MESSENGER MUHAMMED SAW, THE BEST OF ALL MANKIND.

Musical instruments and Music is not forbidden anywhere in the Quran.

If there was such a strict prohibition, why would Allah leave it out of Quran?

Scholars are divided, also there are 2 hadiths (one that supports Music ban, and another where Rasulullah (saw) clearly allows it.

Personally i accept the reasoning of the second group of scholars and dont think Music is forbidden, the lack of Quranic evidence is the most obvious reason. I dont think there is anything wrong with people like Yusuf Islam, Sami Yusuf , their music is truely inspiring and brings one closer to God.

Furthermore, the Prophet Dawood (King David a.s) and the Zaboor (Psalms) is a Book that was revealed by Allah, and it is music.

we are not quranias that we only follow the quran. ALLAAH SAYS IN THE QURAN THAT HE HAS REvEALED THE QURAN AND THE AL HIKMAH (SUNNAH, SHARIA AND SO ON) TO US.
where does it say in the quran how to pray? where does it say in the quran to say the shahadah to become a muslim???? you guys are funny...

THE HADEETH ARE CLEAR. PROPHET MUHAMMED SAW PROHIBITED ALL KINDS OF MUSIC EXCEPT drumms and this only on certain days like eid. other forms of music are forbidden. what is zabour? it WAS GODS BOOK but it was faked by the jews. WE DONT JUDGE ISLAM BY ZABOUR PSALMS OR THE TORAH. ISLAM IS QURAN AND SUNNAH.

The Prohibition

The Noble Qur'an - Luqman 31:6

And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, the Verses of the Qur'an) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-Fire).

Ibn Masood (ra) said about this verse "I swear by the One other than Whom there is no God that it refers to singing [ghinaa].", and he repeated this three times. Ibn Abbaas (ra) said it refered to 'singing and the like' while Jaabir (ra) is reported to view its meaning to signify singing and listening to songs. Many taabi'oon such as Mujaahid, Ikrimah, Mak-hool and Umar ibn Shu'ayb viewed it as a censure of music and song.

Hadith - Bukhari (#787) [Also related by Tabari]

Sa'id ibn Jbayr reported that Ibn 'Abbas said about the verse: "And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks" (31:6), that, "ldle talks means singing and the like."

The Noble Qur'an - Al-Isra 17:64

"And Istafiz [literally means: befool them gradually] those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and other call for Allah's disobedience)..."

Hadith - Bukhari 7:494

Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari that he heard the Prophet saying,

"From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks, and the use of musical instruments as lawful. And (from them), there will be some who will stay near the side of a mountain, and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and Allah will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection."

The Noble Qur'an - An-Najm 53:57-62

The Day of Resurrection draws near, None besides Allah can avert it, (or advance it, or delay it). Do you then wonder at this recital (the Qur'an)? And you laugh at it and weep not, Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing, etc.). So fall you down in prostration to Allah, and worship Him (Alone).

‘Ikrimah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: it was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas that al-sumood [verbal noun from saamidoon, translated here as “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)”] means “singing”, in the dialect of Himyar; it might be said “Ismidi lanaa” [‘sing for us’ – from the same root as saamidoon/sumood] meaning “ghaniy” [sing]. And he said (may Allaah have mercy on him): When they [the kuffaar] heard the Qur’aan, they would sing, then this aayah was revealed.
Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Allah says (interpretation of the meaning) “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)” – Sufyaan al-Thawri said, narrating from his father from Ibn ‘Abbaas: (this means) singing. This is Yemeni (dialect): ismad lana means ghan lana [sing to us]. This was also the view of ‘Ikrimah. (Tafseer Ibn Katheer).

Surah Luqman verse 6 (031:006)

But there are, among men, those who purchase idle tales, without knowledge (or meaning), to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah and throw ridicule (on the Path): for such there will be a Humiliating Penalty.

Sayydana Abdullah Ibn Masood was asked about the meaning of the verse to which he replied:

“I swear by Him besides whom there is no other God, that it refers to ghinaa (singing).”

Furthermore, let us not forget the hadith of Bukhari:

The Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) said:

"There will be people of my Ummah who will seek to make lawful; fornication, wine-drinking and the use of ma'aazif (musical instruments)."

This implies that ma'aazif (musical Instruments) was unlawful in the first place.

Surah Ahzab verse 4

"Allah has not made for any man, two hearts in his body"

When Ibn Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) comments on this verse, he says that a heart that is full of Qur'an cannot be full of music. Truly, the words of Allah and the voice of Satan cannot co-exist in a single heart. Tis' hyprocritical! Nay, tis' a mockery of the highest order.

Surah Al-Isra verse 64 (017:064)

Lead to destruction those whom thou canst among them, with thy (seductive) voice; make assaults on them with thy cavalry and thy infantry; mutually share with them wealth and children; and make promises to them." But Satan promises them nothing but deceit.

Hadith - Bukhari 7:494

Narrated Abu 'Amir that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks, and the use of musical instruments as lawful. This is a old series of lectures a Must Listen! given by Maulana Rashid Korolia from South Africa, going in depth and explaining the position of music in Islam its prohibition and the state of people and Muslims today in regards to it.

This started around the Year 1992, when I first heard the backtracking examples i.e subliminal satanic messages contained in all the popular songs which everyone knew about being a youth and living amidst the culture and school system of the kufar, Maulana relating it to the hadith of Rasullah (saw) was very 'explosive' and mind-boggling experience back then, as relating it to the current affairs had a mind opening impact for many, quoted by shaykh - 'plans of the new world order people to condition the masses',

here are the lyrics for those that knows
------------------------------------------------------

remember
we must learn to live together
as brothers and sisters
and not die upon the fools and so
for this to be done
what should we do next?

keep workin'
keep struggling
and keep marching
and don't you surrender

keep hope
alive
keep hope
alive
keep hope
alive
keep hope
alive

and you are the light of the world

keep marchin'
keep marchin'
and don't you surrender

we're doing something brand new here today
trying to stop a war before it starts
trying to slow down the storm to protect innocent children
don't you give up
and don't you surrender
your spirit and faith will be tested
the war machine will give us fierce opposition
but faith can move mountains

and you are the light of the world

it's hope time
it's healing time
it's hope time
give peace a chance

Many people do not understand the enormity of making something halaal which is haraam, and making something haraam which is halaal. This right is only reserved for Allah Ta'aala, and how dare we, mere creations of Allah Ta'aala ... a spec in this universe of which we know little about ... dare to simply TRY and take the role of He who has created us. Subhan-Allah.

http://serenityfountain.org/bliss4.asp

It is written in Hadiqa: "It is written in the Fatwa book Tatarhaniyya: 'It is haram in every din to read with taghanni, that is, with a melodious voice, poems that satirize others or describe indecency, alcoholic drinks, and incite lust. Those things that cause harams to happen are haram, too.' One who says, 'How beautifully you have read', for something which is certainly haram becomes a kafir. The same applies for harams, such as adultery, usury, hypocrisy and drinking wine. It is permissible to recite with taghanni the poems and ilahis that are conveying Islamic preachings, wisdom, good advice, or beautiful moral qualities. It is makruh to occupy oneself with these continually....
