Bring a Smile to a Muslim Prisoner Campaign II - Cageprisoners.com
as-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatulaahi wa barakaatuh -
Last Eid ul-Fitr, 2003/1424AH, we ran our "Bring a Smile to a Muslim Prisoner Campaign" for the first time. The objective was to give moral support to the prisoners held at Cuba - to let them know they were not alone, rather that their brothers and sisters still remember them. The campaign involved sending Eid Cards to the brothers. We received an overwhelming response - and received scanned images of more than 80 cards made by Muslim school children in London, last Ramadhan, which can be viewed on our site. (http://forums.cageprisoners.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=14)
We are now relaunching this campaign in the run-up to Eid ul-'Adha, 2004. We remind you of the statement of the Prophet (salla'Allaahu 'alayhi was-salam) that "The most beloved of deeds to Allaah is to make a Muslim happy" (related by at-Tabaraani) and of the many ayaat and ahadith enjoining upon us the obligation of supporting and assisting our brothers in general, and in particular, the importance of striving for the release of the Muslim captives.
To participate in this Campaign, please do the following:
1. Choose a prisoner from the Prisoners section of Cageprisoners.com and write down his full name and nationality correctly.
2. Buy an Eid Card or make one yourself - get your children involved as they enjoy making things. Address the Eid Card to the named prisoner and write a short note, encouraging them to be patient and that we have not forgotten them.
3. Put each Eid Card in an envelope and address it to:
Name of Prisoner (Nationality)
160 Camp X-Ray
Washington DC 2053
USA
For example, a sample address would be: Fouad Mahmoud Al Rabiah (Kuwaiti), 160 Camp X-Ray, Washington DC 2053, USA.
Put all the envelopes together in a larger envelope and send it to:
Shaz Manir
c/o BTUC
Gazette Buildings
168 Corporation Street
Birmingham B4 6TF
UNITED KINGDOM
requesting him to forward the cards onto the prisoners via Red Cross. (Shaz Manir is a campaign member of prisonerofwest.org (http://www.prisonerofwest.org).)
4. Letters and cards typically take a few weeks to reach the prisoners via this process (if they reach them at all) as each letter is subject to checking by the US authorities. However, if your intention is correct and you ask Allah to deliver your letter, it will reach the prisoners insha-Allah. To speed up the process, keep any notes short and avoid writing anything that the US authorities might censor. Try to send all your Eid Cards as soon as you can, so there is a reasonable chance of reaching them by Eid (beginning of February). Even if you are late, send the cards anyway.
5. Get all your children involved - your younger brothers or sisters, your neighbours, and if you are a class teacher for Muslim children, get all your children involved.
If you know any Muslim teachers, or a Muslim school, mosque madrassah, home schooling project or Saturday school, then print off a copy of the "Bring a Smile to Muslim Prisoner Campaign" Letter to Schools (http://www.cageprisoners.com/downloads.php?did=44) which can be found at the Campaign Downloads (http://www.cageprisoners.com/downloads.php?cid=1) section of the site.
6. Make a photocopy of any letters that you or your children have made, scan it and post it as a JPEG or GIF attachmnt on the Bring a Smile to a Muslim Prisoner section of our Discussion Board, for others to see and to encourage others to do the same. After Eid, we'll ask our visitors to vote for which card they think is the best.
