Asalaamualaikum,
We have the pleasure to apprise you about Pehchan (www.pehchan.org), a non-governmental organization committed to discuss, inform, educate and campaign for upholding the cultural and Islamic values in the society by exploiting all the lawful means possible.
Pehchan's non-partisan forum believes that the cultural onslaught launched through various media is not devoid of purpose. To us, this billion-dollar investment is meant for hammering the cultural and ideological basis of our society. This cultural invasion is taking the toll of our society from within.
The Cultural situation in Pakistan is a complex and intriguing matter. After 55 years Pakistan, the country envisioned by Allama Iqbal, is still unable to define the direction of our society and parameters of our culture. Each new generation comes out without having any idea of what is their role in the society and what are guiding principles to live with. They are bombarded with all sorts of information through the media campaigns with little help from the elders to counter them. Resulting a more confused generation from the previous one.
The Elite of our society is blindly following in cultural footsteps of the West, from which only negative aspects are being adopted. These lifestyles are then beamed through out the nation on Pakistan Television by various Dramas depicting life styles and problems of this Elite class. Naturally the Middle and Lower middle class crave up to be like the Elite and would do anything to jump on the Fashion rollercoaster. One can see the effect of this trickle down elite cultural effect on the streets now where there is a drastic change in value systems and morality.
Multinationals and NGOs with budgets to match our national Budgets, bring all the arsenal to take control of the local media who are all willing to surrender. These Alien forces bring with them whole set of ideologies and concepts which are in direct conflict with the ideology of Pakistan. With no defense available to the general masses, these Aliens forces get a free hand to infiltrate there way of life into our society. So we get ‘Piyo aur Jiyo’ and ‘jesey chao jeyo’ being flashed at are faces where ever we go.
To make matter worse the local companies, aspiring to become multinationals, toe the same line in media promotion resulting Doppler effect. Most of the Advertising agencies who have a critical role in the media management, unfortunately, lack any sense of creativity and ideology.
Multinationals NGOs are in the forefronts of these campaigns. But in due course some local companies aspiring to become multinational join the band wagon. Ad Agencies play a critical role in defining the road map for these companies in the media and more often that road leads to collision course with the cultural aspects of Pakistan.
English Print Media is self proclaimed troche bearers of this movement. Their teams would not let go by a event with making it a point that the Ideology of Pakistan only exist in the text books we are part of global culture some thing. Every day these papers would carry out stories and pictorials under mining the very existence of Pakistan.
Our own state TV churns out programs which have nothing to do with our society in large. Their theory is that in order to beat Indian TV programming we must become more vulgar. Private Radio Channels promote a culture with out any morality and direction.
Private English medium schools have Indian dances in their parents day programs, Holi, Basant etc are taught right in that tender ages to our next generation.
All these different forces have taken a big toll at our fragile society and we have become more direction less than ever. Although this onslaught is coordinated and organized at higher levels, there is little resistance being put up to them.
Pehchan has been formed to counter these moves strategically. Further this forum would devise programs and events which would initiate a society with strong value system based on Islam and Pakistan. The Forum is being coordinated by a group of young concerned Pakistanis.
We have made it our policy to counter these moves according to the law of the land and in the language which is understood by the 'civilized world'. Hence we don't resort to taking law in to our own hands, on the contrary we believe that action like these are counter productive and result in creating chaos in the society.
Recently we made a experimental campaign against the Big Bill boards by Mobilink and Chen one in the Lahore city. Through a concerted effort, involving the local administration among other, the boards were either removed or modified by the companies. We are pursing other similar issues and are also planning to under take several other activities to manage the cultural situation of Pakistan.
Since the scope of the work is large and multi dimensional, much concerted effort is required to achieve any measurable results. We hope you will guide us with your valuable suggestions and guidance in this affair.
WE call upon all brothers and sisters who would like to participate in this project.
