BBC Hardtalk Interview with Dr Imran Waheed
November 17, 2003 www.1924.org
Dr Imran Waheed, Representative of Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain will appear on the BBC Hardtalk interview programme presented by Tim Sebastian on Tuesday 18th November.
Since the events of September 11th 2001 the discussion of Islam has taken centre stage globally. The Western media has repeatedly attempted to ridicule Islam and portray it is a backward ideology which needs to be ‘modernised’ to fit into the new world order. From the misrepresentation of Muslims as unthinking warmongers, the attack on the Islamic Hudud punishments to the negative portrayal of Islam’s view of women, the Western media has launched an onslaught in order to demonise Islam and Muslims. In their view, the ‘red menace’ of communism has now been replaced by the ‘green menace’ of Islam.
Muslims must take the offensive in the discussion and put the West, its values and actions of its states in the dock. We must engage in this discussion at all levels including the media. This requires us to discuss Islam with bravery, frankness, courage, strength and thought. It is our duty to present Islam intellectually to the world, possessing vision not defeatism.
Dr Waheed’s interview is an example of how Muslims in the West can engage with the media and discuss Islam in an uncompromising manner in this hostile environment.
