‘Words that do not go beyond the throat…’

Abu Abdur Rahman said:

“We learned the Qur’an from some people who told us that they used to memorise 10 verses of the Qur’an and never exceeded them, til they had understood their meaning and acted upon them; however, other people would come after them and would learn the whole Qur’an easily but they would never act upon it.’

[Siyar a'laam an-Nubalaa' 4/269]

...and as Ibn al-Qayyim used to say: "Reciting ONE verse, with understanding and reflection is far greater than reciting the ENTIRE Qur'aan without understanding and reflection."
