Anyone who questions Imam Mahdi is certainly not Shia, nor are they Sunni. It is a heretical sect of Islam. I have heard that such people are not Muslim, either.

Do you seriously believe a person who died two thousands years ago is coming back? Even I might have a chance in the future?
But who would care?

The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Even if the entire duration of the world's existence has already been exhausted and only one day is left before Doomsday (Day of judgment), Allah will expand that day to such a length of time, as to accommodate the kingdom of a person out of my Ahlul-Bayt who will be called by my name. He will then fill out the earth with peace and justice as it will have been full of injustice and tyranny before then."

1. Question: What is your opinion about the appearance of the promised person, al-Mahdee? Are there any ahaadeeth to verify this?I request clarification regarding this (matter)?
Response: There are numerous ahaadeeth which are reported by the leading authorities in the science of hadeeth verifying the advent of the expected Mahdee, the Dajjaal and the Messiah (Jesus (`alayhis-salaam)). Certain signs will precede his advance; the most significant of which is that he will make justice prevail on earth after the prevalance of injustice and tyranny. It is not permissible today for anyone to allege that a certain person is the Mahdee until his signs that the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) foretold have appeared such as the one mentioned above.
And with Allaah lies all success and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) and his family and his companions.

2. Question: I request you provide me with a fatwa as to the authenticity and existence of the Mahdee about whom it is said he is on the Earth. And are there any authentic ahaadeeth which mention him? May Allaah reward you.
Response: The authentic ahaadeeth which mention the appearance of the Mahdee are many, and they are mentioned in a number of narrations from the Imaams of Hadeeth. And a group from the people of knowledge mention that they are mutawaatir (that which is narrated by such a large number of people that it is impossible that they have invented a lie) in meaning, from amongst them are Abul-Hasan al-Aajuree who is from the scholars of the (hijree) fourth century and the noble scholar as-Safaareenee in his book ((Lawaami' al-Anwaar al-Bahiyyah)), and the noble scholar ash-Showkaanee in his treatise ((at-Towdeeh fee tawaatur Ahaadeeth al-Mahdee wad-Dajjaal wal-Maseeh)).
And he (the Mahdee) has many well-known signs which are mentioned in the ahaadeeth, (of which) the most important are:
((That he will fill the Earth with uprightness and justice after it had been filled with injustice and oppression)).
And it is not permissible for anyone to believe that such and such the son of such and such is the Mahdee, until the signs which the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) mentioned in the authentic ahaadeeth are prevalent, the most important of which we have mentioned:
((That he will fill the Earth with uprightness and justice...)), the hadeeth.
And with Allaah lies all success and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) and his family and his companions.

3. Question: Who is the Mahdee, and what are the signs of the (Last) Hour?
Response: (He is) a man from the family of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam), who will appear before the descending of 'Eesaa (Jesus) the son of Mary (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) and he will invite (the ummah) to Islaam. And Allaah will establish the proof by way of him, and many people will be guided by him.
If you want further (information) regarding this, then read what Ibn Katheer has written about him in his book ((al-Bidaayah wan-Nihaayah)).
And with Allaah lies all success and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) and his family and his companions.

4. Question : Who is Imaam Mahdi and what does he have to do with judgement day?
Answer: Imaam Mahdi will be from the descendants of our beloved Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam). His name will also be Muhammad and his father's name will be Abdullah. His appearance will be among the major signs of Qiyaamat. He will lead the Muslims and during his era, there will be justice, peace and piety.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Dear questioner! Thank you very much for your good question that reflects deep insight and true search for knowledge. May Allah increase you in knowledge and grant you success in this world and in the afterlife.
Coming to the question of Mahdi, we would like to start with the words of the prominent Muslim scholar Dr. Taha Jabir Al-`Alwani, president of the Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences and president of the Fiqh Council of North America, that go as following:
"I think we should not wait for somebody to give us hidayah (guidance). Allah has given us all the hidayah that we need in the Qur'an. He, Glory be to Him, says: "Lo! this Qur'an guideth unto that which is straightest, and giveth tidings unto the believers who do good works that theirs will be a great reward." (Al-Isra': 9) We should read the Qur'an and take its hidayah and see how the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, implemented the teachings of the Qur'an in his actual example, by which he became the Qur'an in his ethics and way of life. With this, we are all responsible before Allah and accountable before Him. We can't say that we didn't do our job because we were waiting for the Mahdi or for somebody else to lead us to the straight path."
Delving into the issue of the coming of Mahdi, Sheikh Muhammad Saleh Al-Munajjid, a prominent Saudi lecturer and author states the following:
"There are more than one authentic hadith indicating that the Mahdi, may Allah be pleased with him, will appear at the end of time. His appearance is one of the portents of the Last Day. Among the hadiths are the following:
1- Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, reports that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "At the end of the time of my Ummah, the Mahdi will appear. Allah will grant him rain, the earth will bring forth its fruits, he will give a lot of money, cattle will increase and the Muslim Ummah will become great. He will rule for seven or eight years."
2- `Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, says: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The Mahdi is one of us and a member of my family. Allah will guide him in a single night." (Reported by Ahmad)
3-Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri states that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon, said: "The Mahdi is of my lineage, with a high forehead and a long, thin, curved nose. He will fill the earth with fairness and justice as it was filled with oppression and injustice, and he will rule for seven years." (Reported by At-Tirmidhi)
4- Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘‘Jesus, son of Mary, will descend, and their leader, the Mahdi, will say, 'Come and lead us in prayer.’ But he will say, ‘No, one of them should lead them as an honor to this Ummah from Allah." (Reported by Muslim)
You should be aware that some people have lied and fabricated hadiths about the Mahdi. Some of those "false Mahdis" have tried to deceive the servants of Allah for some worldly gain and distort the picture of Islam. Some have started movements and revolutions and gathered support from the people they deceived. But they were destroyed, and their lies and falsehood were exposed."
Editor's Note:
Regarding Mahdi, we can say that we have a firm belief in all the previously mentioned hadiths. However, such hadiths have nothing to do with legislation and Islamic rulings pertaining to Halal and Haram.
A Muslim should strive hard to adhere to the teachings of Islam amidst all these material trappings and temptations.
We can not expect a Muslim to suffer humiliation and failure in facing the realities of life, and then anxiously await the appearance of the Mahdi who may appear after 1,000 years or more. No one knows the exact time of his appearance except Allah. If Salahud-Deen, `Imadud-Deen Zenki, Qutuz , Nourud-Deen Mahmoud and Muhammad Al-Fateh had adopted the same policy of retreat, the Muslim Ummah would have been subjected to endless suffering at the hands of Crusaders, Tartars and others.

Imaam Mahdi and the Signs that Will Precede Him
The Imposters
The coming of Imam Mahdi is one of the signs of Qiyamah as is the belief of the Ahlus-Sunnah and he has yet to appear. Abdullah ibn Masu`d has reported that the Prophet has said: "The world will not pass away before the Arabs are ruled by a man (referring to Mahdi) of my family whose name will be the same as mine" (Abu Dawud). However, many people in the past falsely claimed to be Imam Mahdi. One of these false claimants was Muhammad bin Tumarat, a tyrant who spread corruption and even buried some of his companions because they did not believe that he was the Mahdi described by the Ahaadith of Rasulullah Some believe it was Muhammad bin Al-Sakari who disappeared at the age of five and went into hiding and has been hiding 10 centuries. Mirza Ghulam Ahmed Qadiani (the cursed) was also one of those who claimed to be the Mahdi as well as many other people. Beside those mentioned there were many others who claimed the office of Mahdi, the most recent being somebody from Manchester who claimed the position for himself. It should be noted that none of the above or anybody else who claimed to be the Mahdi in the past fulfilled the conditions laid down by the Prophet.
Some of the signs which will precede Imam Mahdi are as follows, so that we Muslims are not mislead to believe in somebody claiming to be the Mahdi who in reality is a blatant liar.
Signs that will Precede Imam Mahdi
1) A General Sign
There are many signs that will precede him, a general and very important sign is that he will come at a time when there is great confutation, intense disputes and violent deaths. When people are afflicted by disturbance and experiencing great fear. Calamities will fall upon the people, so much so that a man shall not find a shelter to shelter him self from oppression. There will be battles and fitnaas before his appearance. Every time a fitnaa has come to end, another will start, spread and intensify. The people will be troubled to such an extent that they will long for death. It is then that Imam Mahdi will be sent. Abu Saeed Al-Khudri has repoted that the Messenger of Allah said "He will be sent at a time of intense disputes and differences among people and earthquakes..." (Ahmed)
2) The Double Eclipse In Ramadan
Mohammad bin Ali reports that "For our Mahdi, there are two signs and since the birth of the universe these events have never taken place. The two signs are that there will be a lunar eclipse on the first night of Ramadan and a Solar eclipse in the middle of Ramadan." [This order of appearance of the eclipses contravenes the natural order of double eclipses as they occur in nature, making it an unprecdtable sign.] (Dare-qutni)
3) The Battle in Mina
Before Imam Mahdi emerges an inter-tribal fight will take place. In the same year hajis will be looted and a battle will erupt in Mina in which many people will be killed. Ameer bin Shauaib reported from his grandfather that the messenger of Allah said: "In Dhul Qaidah (Islamic Month) the tribes will fight, Hajis will be looted and there will be a battle in Mina in which many people will be slain and blood will flow until it runs over the Jamaratul Aqba. Their companion (referring to Imam Mahdi) will flee to a point between the corner and the Maqaam and will be forced to accept people's allegiance." (Al-Fitan, Nuaim ibn Hammad)
4) The Euphrates will Disclose a Mountain of Gold
The Final Hour will not come until the river Euphrates (which flows through Syria and Iraq and finally opens in the Gulf) will disclose a mountain of gold over which people will fight and die Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: "The shall not occur until the Euphrateswill disclosea mountain of gold, over which people will fight. 99 out of every hundred shall die, and every one of them shall say, 'perchance I shall be the one to succeed" (Muslim) In another narration we have been told that who ever is present at the time when the Euphrates discloses a mountain of gold should not take the gold.
5) Emergence of the Sufyani
The Sufyani (a descendant of Abu Sufyan) will emerge before Imam Mahdi from the depths of Damascus. According to some weak narrations, his name will be Urwa bin Muhammad and his kunniya 'Abu Utbah'. The Ahadith regarding the Sufyani specify that he is a tyrant who will spread corruption and mischeif on the earth before Imam Mahdi. He will be such a tyrant that he will kill the children and rip out the bellies of women. When he hears about the Mahdi, he will send an army to seize and kill him. However the earth will swallow this army before it even reaches Imam Mahdi. Abu Hurairah has narrated that the Prophet said: "A man will emerge from the depths of Damascus. He will be called Sufyani. Most of those who follow him will be from the tribe of Kalb. He will kill by ripping the stomachs of women and even kill the children. A man from my family will appear in the Haram, the news of his advent will reach the Sufyani and he will send to him one of his armies. He (referring to Imam Mahdi) will defeat them. They will then travel with whoever remains until they come to a desert and they will be swallowed. None will be saved except the one who had informed the others about them." (Mustadrak).

Anything from http://www.al-islam.org is Shia. If it helps, I can find other websites that are Shia which do not bear the word "Shia" inside them, if it will help.
Inter-islam is an Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama`ah site promoting the Hanafi madhhab in general. It is suited to Southeast Asia (Subcontinent), so some of the fiqh sections will appear unusual to the Western eye. However, these are from the sections on `aqidah, so they should be universal - since `aqidah is rarely affected by cultural and remains honestly Islamic.

Do Sunnis and Shias agree on what will happen in the End Times?
According to Islam, what will happen to Christians and Jews in the end?
Why is there a need for Jesus and the Imam Mahdi to come?
Why two Messianic figures?
