holly molly. My Quwaiti friend just told me that dogs are considered "un-clean" in Islam and ownership of these animals is forbidden. Is that true?
Jeeez, this is the man's best friend we're talking about............I've had dog's all my life.
Anyway, I will not form any opinions until I hear from knowledgable folks here.
Thanks........

o mankind, did i not tell you not to worship shaytan, that he was to you an avowed enemy, and many of you took him as a friend, when Allah tells you to worship Him, that is the straight way, and all other ways will lead you astray

Now cats I could understand. If you dropped dead in your house, your dog would stay faithfully by your side. A cat, on the other hand, would be feasting on your eyeballs about 5 minutes after you hit the deck.

I'm still shaking my head in bewilderment. Dogs are the most loyal, friendly, good natured, not to mention hard working animals in the world. Truly a man's partner from the animal kingdom.
Dogs were one of the very first animals man "tamed". Traditionally they were used for hunting, small pack animals, towing sleds and such, and food when nothing else was left.
In Pompeii, the ancient Roman city, there were dogs that sacrificed themselves during the cities last day by using their own bodies as a shield in the attempt to protect their masters from the deadly ash and heat. You cannot get a better friend nor have a more loyal animal than that.

Some scholars say the saliva is un-clean.
Some say all of the dog is un-clean.
That's because the Prophet (saw) ordered the muslims to clean their vessels touched by dogs 7 times, the first time with dirt.
However, Some scholars believe they are not un-clean and that we must clean the vessels because the Prophet said so not because the dog is un-clean. That's because we are allowed to use dogs for hunting and both their body and their saliva touch the animal.
Allah (swt) knows best.

Also scientific evidence about hygiene, however I am sure that much of it can relate to most animals. An interesting article nonetheless....
"Here follows an excerpt from an article by the German scientist, Dr. Gerard Finstimer , (Translated from the German magazine Kosinos.) in which the author sheds light on the dangers to human health resulting from keeping dogs or coming in contact with them. He says: The increasing interest shown by many people in recent times in keeping dogs as pets has compelled us to draw public attention to the dangers which result from this, especially because pet dogs are hugged and kissed and permitted to lick the hands of the young and the old, and what is worse, to lick the plates and utensils which are used by human beings for eating and drinking.
Besides being unhygienic and uncouth, this practice is bad manners and abhorrent to good taste. However, we are not concerned with such matters. Leaving them to be addressed by teachers of etiquette and good taste. Rather this article is intended to present some scientific observations.
From the medical point of view, which is our main concern here, the hazards to human health and life from keeping and playing with dogs are not to be ignored. Many people have paid a high price for their ignorance, as the tapeworm carried by dogs is a cause of chronic disease, sometimes resulting in death.
This worm is found in man, in cattle, and in pigs, but it is found in fully-developed form only in dogs, wolves and rarely in cats. These worms differ from others in that they are minute and invisible, consequently, they were not discovered until very recently. He continues, Biologically the developmental process of this worm has some unique characteristics. In the lesions caused by them, one worm gives rise to many heads which spread and form other and varied kinds of lesions and abscesses. These heads develop into full-grown worms only in dogs' tonsils. In humans and in other animals they appear as lesions and abscesses completely different from the tapeworm itself In animals the size of an abscess may reach that of an apple, while the liver of the infected animal may grow from five to ten times its normal size. In human beings the size of the abscess may reach that of a clenched fist or even the head of an infant; it is filled with yellow fluid weighing from ten to twenty pounds. In the infected human it may cause diverse kinds of inflammations in the lungs, muscles, spleen, kidneys, and brain, and appears in such different forms that specialists, until very recently, had difficulty in recognizing it.
In any case, wherever this inflammation is found, it poses great danger to the health and life of the patient. What is worse is that, in spite of our knowledge of its life history, origin, and development, we have not been able to devise a cure for it, except that in some instances these parasites die out, possibly because of antibodies produced in the human body. Unfortunately, cases in which such parasites die without causing damage are rare indeed.
Moreover, chemotherapy has failed to produce any benefit, and the usual treatment is surgical removal of the abscessed parts of the body. For all these reasons we should use all possible resources to fight against this dreadful disease and save man from its dangers.
Professor Noeller, through post-mortem dissection of human bodies in Germany, found that the incidence of infection with dogs' worms is at least one percent. In some places such as Dalmatia, Iceland, southeastern Australia, andHolland, where dogs are used for pulling sleds, the incidence rate of tapeworm among dogs is 12 percent. In Iceland the number of people who suffer from the inflammation caused by this worm has reached the rate of 43 percent. If we add to this the human suffering, the loss of meat because of infection of cattle, and the permanent danger to human health because of the presence of tapeworms, we cannot be very complacent toward this problem.
Perhaps the best way to combat the problem is to limit the worms to dogs and not let them spread, since in actuality we need to keep some dogs. We should not neglect to treat dogs when necessary by getting rid of the tapeworms in their tonsils and perhaps repeating this process periodically on shepherd dogs and watchdogs.
Man can protect his life and health by keeping a safe distance from dogs. He should not hug them, play with them, or let them come close to children. Children should be taught not to play with dogs or to fondle them. Dogs should not be permitted to lick children's hands or come to places where they play. Unfortunately, dogs are allowed to roam about everywhere, especially in places where children play, and their bowls are scattered throughout the house. Dogs must have their own separate bowls, and they must not be allowed to lick bowls and plates used by humans. They should not be allowed inside grocery stores, restaurants, or marketplaces. In general, great care must be taken that they do not come in contact with anything which is used by people for eating and drinking."

Tapeworms in Dogs
What are tapeworms in dogs?
Tape worms are flattened intestinal worms that are made up of many small segments about ¼ – ½ inch (3-5 mm) long. Unlike roundworms that live freely in the intestinal tract, tapeworms attach to the wall of the small intestine by hook-like mouthparts.
The most common tapeworm of dogs and cats is Dipylidium caninum. The adult worms may reach up to 8 inches (20 cm) in length. The individual segments are developed from the head end and gradually mature, finally being shed at the opposite end, either singly or in short chains. These segments are passed in the feces when the dog defecates. They are about 3 mm (1/8”) long and look like grains of rice. Occasionally they can be seen moving on the hairs around the anus or on freshly passed feces. As the tape worm segment dries, it becomes a golden color and the fertilized eggs are released into the environment.
Unlike roundworms, dogs cannot be infected by eating fertilized tape worm eggs. Tapeworms must first pass through an intermediate host, a flea, before they can infect a dog or cat.
How do dogs get tapeworms?
When the infected eggs are released into the environment, they have to be swallowed by immature fleas (larvae) also in the environment. Once inside the larval stage of the flea, the tapeworm egg then develops into an infective tapeworm in the adult flea. During grooming or in response to a flea’s bite, the dog can ingest the flea with the infective tape worm and the life cycle is completed.
Are tapeworms dangerous for my dog?
Tapeworms do not normally cause serious health problems in dogs. Occasionally dogs will drag their bottoms on the ground (scooting) in order to allay this irritation but this behavior can be for other reasons such as impacted anal sacs.
In puppies, heavy tapeworm infestation can be more serious. Lack of growth, anemia and intestinal blockage can occur. Occasionally, the head of the tape worm (scolex) detaches from the intestinal wall. The worm can then be passed either in the feces or vomited.
How is diagnosis made?
Clinical diagnosis is usually made by observing the white mobile tapeworm segments in the feces or crawling around the anus. They often look like grains of rice.
Tapeworm segments are only passed intermittently and therefore are often not diagnosed on routine fecal examination. If you find any segments, white or golden color, bring these to us for a definitive diagnosis.
Is there anything else I should do?
Control of fleas is very important in the management and prevention of tapeworm infection. Flea control involves treatment of your dog and the environment. If your dog lives in a flea-infested environment, re-infection with tape worms may occur in as little as two weeks. Since tapeworm medication is so effective, recurrent infections are almost always due to re-infection from fleas and not failure of the product.
Can I get tapeworm from my dogs?
Contracting tapeworms from your dog is not common or likely. Dipylidium caninum, the most common tapeworm of the dog, depends on the flea as the intermediate host. A person must swallow an infected flea to become infected. A few cases have been reported in children. Just as control in dogs depends upon vigorous flea eradication, this strategy will also eliminate any risk of children in the environment becoming infected.
What is the treatment?
With today’s drugs, treatment is safe, simple and effective. The parasiticide may be given either in the form of tablets or by injection. It causes the parasite to dissolve in the intestines so you normally will not see tape worms passed in the stool.
These drugs are very safe and should not cause vomiting or diarrhea or other adverse side effects.
The use of a natural remedy can be very convenient, works great, and is very cost effective. Tape Away (made famous in the Martin Zucker "Natural Pet" medicine books), will eliminate tapeworms. In addition, using Tape Away on a monthly basis is an excellent, all-natural preventative medication for pets who are prone to become reinfested. This treatment can be safely repeated as often as necessary. Tape Away is a very convenient, easy-to-use, cost effective alternative. Learn more about Tape Away. Tapeworm Medicine For Dogs (comment: And Cats)
Tapeworm medicine for dogs is very important for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that you don't want tapeworms in your dog to reproduce. A pet supply like dog Droncit will stop that from happening, since it will wipe out the tapeworm very quickly. With the right medication, no tapeworm information will be left in your dog, and he will be both healthier and happier.
If you don't use tapeworm medicine for dogs, and just let the tapeworm sit and grow, you're setting up your dog for a world of trouble. It doesn't take two tapeworms to reproduce; each segment of a tapeworm has both sex organs. Information shows that while often, two tapeworms will come together to reproduce, it is possible for some species of dog tapeworms to self-fertilize and reproduce in your dog's gut. Hence the need for fast action with an anti-tapeworm pet supply.
Why You Need Tapeworm Medicine for Dogs
Clearly, you need to give your dog tapeworm medicine so you can get him healthy. Without an anti-tapeworm pet supply, your dog will continue to have his nutrients sucked out of his system by the tapeworm. With this information, it should be obvious that your dog's health can suffer radically from having a tapeworm in its gut.
It's also important to treat tapeworms with the right pet supply because tapeworms are not only a canine problem. These pests will also seek out humans as hosts, because the nutritional info in our guts is just as good as in a dog's. While it's far more likely for a human to get a tapeworm from raw or poorly cooked meat than from a dog, it's always wise to keep tapeworms as far from your life as possible.

TAPEWORM INFECTION
What are tapeworms?
The most common tapeworm of dogs (and cats) is called Dipylidium caninum. This parasite attaches to the small intestinal wall by hook-like mouthparts. Adult tapeworms may reach 8 inches (20 cm) in length. The adult worm is actually made up of many small segments about 1/8 inch (3 mm) long. As the tail end of the worm matures, the terminal segments break off and pass into the stool. Occasionally, the mobile segments can be seen crawling near the anus or on the surface of a fresh bowel movement. These segments look like grains of rice and contain tapeworm eggs; the eggs are released into the environment when the segment dries. The dried segments are small (about 1/16", or 2 mm), hard and golden in color. These dried segments can sometimes be seen stuck to the hair around the dog's anus.
How did my dog get tapeworms?
First, tapeworm eggs must be swallowed by flea larvae (an immature stage of the flea). Contact between flea larvae and tapeworm eggs is thought to occur most frequently in contaminated bedding or carpet. The life cycle of the tapeworm cannot be completed unless the flea swallows tapeworm larvae.
Next, the dog chews or licks its skin as a flea bites; the flea is then swallowed. As the flea is digested within the dogs intestine, the tapeworm hatches and anchors itself to the intestinal lining.
What kind of problems do tapeworms cause for the dog?
Tapeworms are not highly pathogenic (harmful) to your dog. They may cause debilitation and weight loss when they occur in large numbers. Sometimes, the dog will scoot or drag its anus across the ground or carpet because the segments are irritating to the skin in this area. The adult worm is generally not seen, but the white segments which break away from the tapeworm and pass outside the body rarely fail to get an owner's attention!
Occasionally, a tapeworm will release its attachment in the intestines and move into the stomach. This irritates the stomach, causing the dog to vomit the worm. When this happens, a worm several inches in length will be seen.
How is tapeworm infection diagnosed?
Tapeworm infection is usually diagnosed when the white, mobile segments are seen crawling on your dog or in the stool. Tapeworms are not usually detected by the routine fecal examination performed by the veterinarian. Because of this, veterinarians depend on the owner to notify them of possible tapeworm infection in the dog.
How is tapeworm infestation treated?
Treatment is simple and, fortunately, very effective. A drug which kills tapeworms is given, either orally or by injection. It causes the tapeworm to dissolve within the intestines. Since the worm is usually digested before it passes, it is not visible in your dog's stool. These drugs should not cause vomiting, diarrhea, or any other adverse side-effects.
Control of fleas is very important in the management and prevention of tapeworm infection. Flea control involves treatment of your dog, the indoor environment and the outdoor environment where the dog resides. If the dog lives in a flea-infested environment, reinfection with tapeworms may occur in as little as two weeks. Because the medication which treats tapeworm infection is so effective, return of the tapeworms is almost always due to reinfection from the environment.
How do I tell tapeworms from pinworms?
Tapeworms and pinworms look very similar. However, contrary to popular belief, pinworms do not infect dogs or cats. Any worm segments seen associated with dogs are due to tapeworms. Children who get pinworms do not get them from dogs or cats.
Are canine tapeworms infectious to people?
Yes, although infection is not common or likely. A flea must be ingested for humans to become infected with the most common tapeworm of dogs. Most reported cases have involved children. The most effective way to prevent human infection is through aggressive, thorough flea control. The risk of infection with this tapeworm in humans is quite small but does exist.
One less common group of tapeworms, called Echinococcus, is of particular concern as a threat to human health. These tapeworms cause very serious disease when humans become infected. This parasite is harder to diagnose than the tapeworm caused by fleas because the segments are small and not readily seen. Hunters and trappers in the north central United States and south central Canada may be at risk for infection by this worm if strict hygiene is not observed. Foxes and coyotes (and the wild rodents upon which they prey) are important in the life cycle of this parasite. Dogs and cats may also become infected if they eat rodents carrying the parasite. When eggs of Echinococcus are passed in the feces of the dog and cat, humans are at risk for infection. Free-roaming cats and dogs may need to be periodically treated with tapeworm medication. Rodent control and good hygiene are important in preventing the spread of this disease to humans. As with the more common tapeworm, infection with Echinococcus is infrequent but possible.
What can be done to control tapeworm infection in dogs and to prevent human infection?
1. Effective flea control is important.
2. Prompt deworming should be given when parasites are detected; periodic deworming may be appropriate for pets at high risk for reinfection.
3. All pet feces should be disposed of promptly, especially in yards, playgrounds, and public parks.
4. Strict hygiene is important, especially for children. Do not allow children to play in potentially contaminated environments.

Dog Saliva: The Next Wonder Drug?
Article #1234
by Ned Rozell
This column is provided as a public service by the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, in cooperation with the UAF research community. Ned Rozell, is a science writer at the institute.
In the name of science, Kyle Manger and Joel Cladouhos sat down in front of Kyle's Labrador retriever, Yogi, and started to eat dinner. Almost instantly, gelatinous icicles of drool began dripping from the dog's jowls.
Instead of being grossed out, the two sophomores at Juneau-Douglas High School held a sterile glass tube under the stream and collected Yogi's saliva for use in their science fair experiment, titled "Dog Saliva: The Next Wonder Drug?"
Seven-hundred miles north, in Fairbanks, West Valley High School senior Patryce McKinney was busy reaching inside the mouths of 102 dogs to complete her award-winning science project, titled "Antibiotics and Dog Saliva."
Each of the students, who hadn't heard of one another's projects, became interested in the rumored ability of dog saliva to kill bacteria. Joel said his father works at a health clinic where a nurse said that wounds inflicted by human bites get infected more often than dog bite wounds. Patryce had heard that a wound will heal faster if you let a dog lick it.
They went about their experiments a bit differently. Kyle and Joel, both 15 and students of John Norton's introductory biology course, used sterile cotton swabs to collect samples containing bacteria found at their school. They swabbed a hand, nose, ear, mouth, and a table, and placed their samples in a petri dish on a bed of agar, a seaweed-derived substance that acts as bacteria food.
After the bacteria had flourished a few days, they made a broth of each type. They then simultaneously placed the bacteria broth and dog saliva in new agar dishes, and let them react for two days.
Patryce, 18, a student of Don Peterson's biotechnology class, obtained millions of Escherichia coli, a disease-causing bacteria commonly found in human and dog feces, from a biological supply company. She made an E.-coli broth, from which she grew a "lawn" of the one-celled organisms on a petri dish.
On her saliva quest, Patryce advertised in the West Valley teacher's lounge for volunteer dogs, and she also went to the animal shelter. Including her border collie, Oreo, she sampled 102 dogs. She chose dogs of different breeds and ages so no particular breed trait would skew her results.
Patryce went straight to the source; wearing latex gloves, she touched a tiny circle of sterile filter paper directly to the rear upper gum of the dogs, back by the molars.
Two of a dog's four saliva ducts, the zygomatic and parotid, empty saliva from glands of the same name at the points from where Patryce sampled. She said she wanted "fresh stuff" as opposed to saliva off the tongue.
After gathering three samples from each dog, Patryce placed the saliva-drenched paper on the E. coli lawns, and, as Kyle and Joel did, looked for "rings of inhibition," where the saliva slowed or stopped the growth of bacteria.
Their findings: Kyle and Joel found that dog saliva did inhibit growth, especially on nose mucous bacteria, but they also found many types of bacteria in the dog saliva itself. They concluded perhaps dog saliva is not the next wonder drug.
Patryce found that in 16 percent of her samples, E. coli growth was inhibited by the dog saliva, which to her was significant enough to show that the antibiotic properties of dog saliva merit further study.
"But it wasn't enough for me to start mass production of dog spit and marketing it," she said.
In a 1990 study done at the University of California, Davis, researchers found dog saliva killed E. coli and Streptococcus canis, another harmful bacteria. The scientists concluded that when mother dogs licked their nipples it helped keep puppies free from disease, and that dogs licking their own wounds accomplished the same goal.
I'll never turn my head from my dog's kiss again.

I'm not disputing your beliefs, (I'm not even promoting my own).
But there's nothing wrong with investigating the facts or fallacy of why dogs and pigs have such a bad reputation, historically, in Islam or even Judaism.

Well, I grew up always having pet dogs myself. I've found dogs to be very loyal and playful animals. I don't see what is so bad about them. This makes no sense to me, I don't see why Rasululah(SAWS) would prohibit dogs.

Well, I grew up always having pet dogs myself. I've found dogs to be very loyal and playful animals. I don't see what is so bad about them. This makes no sense to me, I don't see why Rasululah(SAWS) would prohibit dogs.
I think he saws did admit they have good traits like loyalty, but because they are not always so clean its better if you dont take them in ur house, & a hadith says angels dont go in houses with dogs...but I dont have the full hadith to quote from. inshallah someone else can post it
alifromconroe,
you say in another tread that you have skin illments.
If it is so; you should not be around animals of any kind. Even birds.
Dogs are very dirty. Dogs can eat escrment fecis of humans and othe animals, dead stinky carcass of anymals and humans.
I saw dogs eat their own fecis, he din`t do becouse he din`t have anough to eat. His owner fed him very well, including fresh meat.

This article confirms that dogs can transmit disease to humans, mostly through transmission by the fecal-oral route.
Frequent handwashing after coming into contact with a dog is recommended.
Seems as though a Muslim would have the washing aspect already covered.

My skin ailment isn't in any way related to animals. It's heriditary, and in my bloodstream. External influences make no difference.

Health is only one aspect. Safety is another. I've read about family dogs who have been kept for years suddenly turning and attacking small children and babies. Cat's are much nicer, more intellegent, cleaner, and the prophet also liked them.
Quick search from google.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Three pit bulls savagely attacked a 10-year-old boy who was riding a bicycle his parents had just given him for making the honor roll at school.
The dogs ripped off both the boy's ears and left bite wounds all over his face, arms and upper body, police said Tuesday.
Sean Jones was in critical condition at Children's Hospital in Oakland after 31/2 hours of surgery following the Monday night attack in nearby Richmond.

Independent on Sunday July 2 2000 p26
Regulations on attack dogs in Germany have been tightened after a pit pull terrier killed a six-year-old boy in Hamburg. The pit bull, Zeus, and a Staffordshire terrier, Gypsy, jumped a fence and attacked a group of children. The boy, Vulkan, tried to run away, and Zeus bit and held onto his throat. Gypsy also seriously mauled a child. Armed police shot both dogs, but Vulkan had died before they arrived.

Like AbuMubarak said the Prophet (saw) told us and that should be enough for us Muslims. It doesn't really matter whether it is clean or not.
As Muslims, we do not speculate on why once Allah and the Prophet forbid us from something. Did Adam asked Allah why he was forbidden to eat from the forbidden tree?? No.
Some of the things we are told to do and some of things we are told not to do could simply be to test us. Plus, they could be reasons that we are not capable of understanding now. But in general as Muslims we do not questions why if there is no apparent reasons. The Qur'an tells us:
"It is not for any believer, man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger (SAAW) have decreed a matter, to have the choice in their affair. And whosoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger (SAAW) he has gone astray into manifest error."
[Al-Ahzab: 36].

According to the Islamic laws, the inherently unclean things or ayan najisah are nine in number. The nine ayan najisah can be divided into four groups as follows:
Common between Men & Animal:
Urine
Stool
Semen
Blood
Corpses
In Animals only:
Dogs
Pigs
In Man only:
Kafir
Drinks:
Intoxicating liquids
Mujtahids have ruled that all parts of pigs and dogs, even the nails, hair, teeth and bones, and their saliva, milk, urine and excrement are najis. Therefore, all things made from pig's fat, skin, hair, and other parts of its body (e.g., belt, gloves, jackets, and shoes) are najis. Similarly, all the food items produced from the meat and fat of pig is najis.

ppl make bags and stuff out of pigs?! i thought they only did it from cows leather? ewwww how can u tell if its made out of a pig?!
People make bags just about any animals. Yes, even chikens, dogs and cats.
I never buy leather purse or belts, or any other accesories, for that metter.
I usually make my bags with cotton material, or syntetic lather.
No, you can`t tell what skinned animal the bag is. Some time, very expensive bags do come with the skin derivative. But this is mostly for snake bags or very refined baby cow, or also from goat bags. witch is very costly: beetwin $ 6,000 to 20,000, and more.
