Imagine, you've happily installed Linux because the installation of Linux is easier than installing Microsoft Windows. A few days pass and you use it for web browsing, writing letter, doing your home expenses and so on.

Then you get notified that there is an update. You click through the screens and all the updates are installed. You restart your computer and BANG! You have X problems, the kernel updates have broken some kernel related modules which is stopping you from running X or some other program.

How would a noobi fit this problem?

Obcourse if you are a Linux user, it is relatively straight forward to fix this problem. So for people who do not know what a kernel is, what Linux headers are, and how all this fits in with modules becoming broken after updates, Linux is NOT for you.

Use remastersys to create system restore points to DVD, and just load up the dvd version again to go back....as some people do when Windows breaks on them.

such a shame. microsoft, no matter how evil they are, got it right with their "works just out of the box" approach to windows.

Salaam Abdullah,

I am not a big fan of linux either, but I have to admit that it has come a long way in terms of usability. I read recently that Ubuntu is pretty friendly and is the closest to Windows in terms of friendliness and out of the box usability. Is it true? Any experience on it?

i have used ubuntu before, but remember that if you have problems, you'd have to use the command line which is a real pain with unixes and is a black art. install ubuntu though as it's best to have experience with it.

Honestly, I was a bit upset with linux when I started using it (I think I started with Suse) but now I run servers, workstations, and entire networks on Linux. For the cons the pros are so much stronger. If I have an issue with a piece of software it is much easier for me to drop into the source and rewrite it and just rerun a make. I understand of course that 9.04 broke a lot of functionality for some people but it made Compiz and my ATI drivers work for the first time in a long long time. The only issue I have had so far is my network/system monitor sending me lots of stupid messages getting dropped into /var/log that are coming from some new app meant to consolidate applications in the taskbar. It was just as simple as killing the process and disabling the application in init.d to stop it though.

I for one am a die hard Linux fan, I can understand where a lot of people are not though. Its not for everyone.

Also, what issues are you having with 9.04? Have you reported the bug on launchpad? If so do you have the bug number?

Other than the fact that Linux sometimes breaks on kernel updates, I love it! Luckely, I know how to fix it when it's broken.

Thats good bro. Kernel issues are sometimes pretty rough to fix, so if you are fixing those you are doing pretty good. What flavor are you running?

Speaking of linux, do any of the brothers or sisters here assist in the development of Ubuntu Sabily (aka Ubuntu ME)? I think I will attempt to start helping them insha'Allah.

It came in second place for linux adverts. Personally, I thought it was the best from the lot.

This is a good example of the progress of linux. Unfortunately, it has music.
