Advice to New Muslims

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Asalam Alaykum (Peace be with you),

Congratulations! Alhamdulillah (Praise to Allah) who has guided you to Islam, the path to success in this life and the next.

So now you are a new Muslim with lots on your mind. Amidst the joy and excitement of embracing Islam you may also be feeling bewildered or confused regarding what to do next. You may have concerns about how your family or friends will react. No doubt there is lots to learn and obstacles to overcome, but with a sincere effort and a strong faith in Allah, everything will fall into place. Below you will find the most important advice we can offer you as a new Muslim. Don’t rush yourself, go at your own pace, and most of all remember we are here to help and support you every step of the way.

Importance of Prayer

[“The importance of the prayer in Islam cannot be understated. It is the first pillar of Islam that the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned after mentioning the testimony of faith, by which one becomes a Muslim. It was made obligatory upon all the prophets and for all peoples. Allah has declared its obligatory status under majestic circumstances. For example, when Allah spoke directly to Moses, He said, "And I have chosen you, so listen to that which is inspired to you. Verily, I am Allah! There is none worthy of worship but I, so worship Me and offer prayer perfectly for My remembrance." [Taha 13-14]

Similarly, the prayers were made obligatory upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during his ascension to heaven. Furthermore, when Allah praises the believers, such as in the beginning of surah al-Muminoon, one of the first descriptions He states is their adherence to the prayers.

The importance of prayer is demonstrated in the many of the Prophet’s statement. For example, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad." [Recorded by al-Tabarani. According to al-Albani, it is sahih. Al-Albani, Sahih al-Jami, vol.1, p. 503.]

The importance of the prayers lies in the fact that no matter what actions one performs in his life, the most important aspect is one’s relationship to Allah, that is, one’s faith (imaan), God-consciousness (taqwa), sincerity (ikhlas) and worship of Allah (`ibaadah). This relationship with Allah is both demonstrated and put into practice, as well as improved and increased, by the prayer. Therefore, if the prayers are sound and proper, the rest of the deeds will be sound and proper; and if the prayers are not sound and proper, then the rest of the deeds will not be sound and proper, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself stated.

As for the Hereafter, Allah’s forgiveness and pleasure is closely related to the prayers. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Allah has obligated five prayers. Whoever excellently performs their ablutions, prays them in their proper times, completes their bows, prostrations and khushu` [Khushu` in the prayer is where the person’s heart is attuned to the prayer. This feeling in the heart is then reflected on the body. The person remains still and calm. His gaze is also lowered. Even his voice is affected by this feeling in the heart….] has a promise from Allah that He will forgive him. And whoever does not do that has no promise from Allah. He may either forgive him or punish him." [Recorded by Malik, Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Nasa’I and others. According to al-Albani, it is sahih. Al-Albani, Sahih al-Jami, vol. 1, p. 616.] ]

The prayers are a type of purification for a human being. He turns and meets with his Lord five times a day. As alluded to above, this repeated standing in front of Allah should keep the person from performing sins during the day. Furthermore, it should also be a time of remorse and repentance, such that he earnestly asks Allah for forgiveness for those sins that he committed. In addition, the prayer in itself is a good deed that wipes away some of the evil deeds that he performed. These points can be noted in the following hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him):

"If a person had a stream outside his door and he bathed in it five times a day, do you think he would have any filth left on him?" The people said, "No filth would remain on him whatsoever." The Prophet (peace be upon him) then said, "That is like the five daily prayers: Allah wipes away the sins by them." (Recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim.)

In another hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The five daily prayers and the Friday Prayer until the Friday prayer are expiation for what is between them." (Recorded by Muslim.)”] [1]

Okay so now you ask yourself…I know the prayer is so important, how do I learn how to pray? There are many sources on the internet which explain the purification and prayers, and that’s a good way to get an idea. But to really learn how to do it correctly you have to make the effort of finding a practicing Muslim to help you. A good place to do so is at the local mosque in your area…this is explained in more detail below.

[1] Extracts from “The Importance of Prayer” by Jamaal al-Din Zarabozo

Seek Knowledge

Acquiring Islamic knowledge is vital to every Muslim. Clearly knowledge must precede action, since it is the bases by which one knows his/her obligations to Allah. Knowledge will enable you to practice your religious duties correctly, be aware of things which Allah made halal (permissible) and haram (forbidden), in that way you will conduct your life according to Allah’s guidance.

Several verses in the Quran reveal to us the importance of knowledge:

"Allah will raise up, to (suitable) ranks and (degrees), those of you who believe and who have been granted knowledge. And Allah is well-acquainted with all you do." [Al-Mujadilah 58:11]

"And say: My Lord increase me in knowledge." [Ta-Ha 20:114]

Also the prophet, peace be upon him, informed us of the reward for one who seeks knowledge.

Abu Hurayrah relates that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "For him who embarks on the path of seeking knowledge, Allah will ease for him the way to paradise." (Related by Muslim)

So, know you may wonder what do I need to learn?

Well first of all you need to:

Have a good understanding of the basic Islamic beliefs (Aqeedah) such as knowledge of Allah, the Angels, the Prophets, and the Day of Judgment. Learn the purification and the five daily prayers correctly. Its important to learn how to recite Al Fatiha in Arabic for the prayers.

Learn about the permissible (Halal) and forbidden (Harm) things in Islam.

After that, you can continue in learning more about the other pillars of Islam such as Sawm(Fasting), Zakat, and Hajj (Pilgrimage). Also you should strive to learn the Seerah (life of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him), since his life is a role model for all Muslims. Another excellent goal which many converts aspire to is to learn the Arabic language to be able to read and understand the Quran in the language it was revealed by Allah(subhanahu wa ta'ala).

How can you do this?

There are many resources available to learn. There is a multitude of Islamic books, articles, and tapes which address all these topics and can give you a good start, however to learn correctly you need to do so at the hands of a practicing Muslim as we mentioned earlier regarding the prayers. Just like you can’t expect to be a good sports player by simply reading a book or two about it, you can’t expect to learn the various branches of Islam all alone; you need to practice it with other Muslims. Naturally to do so, you should frequently visit the mosque in your area…. Which brings us to the next topic.

Importance of the Mosque (Masjid)

The mosque plays a central role in Muslim society. Apart from being a place of prayers (the 5 daily prayers as well as the Friday prayer) the Mosque is a learning center. It’s a place where study circles and lectures are held for Muslims to learn more about Islam. Also a place were Muslims meet to study and recite the Quran, collect charity for the poor, and discuss issues concerning the community. It’s an ideal place for a new convert to meet Muslims and learn in a short time what would normally take weeks or months to learn alone. Naturally many new converts are shy or afraid to make their first visit to the mosque, but if they knew the joy which Muslims share when they meet a convert, such hesitation would disappear. Also, don’t worry about not doing everything perfectly from the start, no one expects a new Muslim to learn everything over night.

From Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet, peace be upon him, that he said: "A man does not frequent the mosques for the Prayer and the remembrance of Allaah except that Allaah, the Most High, greets him joyfully, just as the family of one who is absent greet him with joy when he returns to them." [Reported by Ibn Abee Shaybah, Ibn Maajah, Ibn Khuzaimah and others and it is found in Saheehit-Targheeb (no. 315)]

So finally, we strongly encourage you to do your best to enrol in the study circles in your local mosque or fix a weekly schedule with the Imam to teach you all you need to know.

Staying In touch

It’s hard to explain the joy the whole team feels at Islamway upon hearing of a new convert like yourself, at the same time we feel a sadness when someone losses touch with us. We continue to wonder how the person is doing…how he/she is coping with family and friends, If he/she succeeded in finding a local mosque or not …etc. We hope that you will help us to help you, be keeping contact and letting us know your progress, concerns, questions…etc.

Finally, Islamway Team sends you their warmest congratulations on embracing Islam and wishes you all the success in this life and the next, as Allah tells us in the Quran,

"Those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, and establish regular prayers and regular charity, will have their reward with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve." [2:277]

Some advice for those who want to read the Quran in Arabic

When I converted to Islam, learning prayer was such a struggle. For me praying in a language I did not understand was almost unthinkable. "How could I have prayed to Allah, when I did not know what was I saying?" - many times I was thinking. But, knowing that we must say our prayers in Arabic, I have memorized al-Fatiha and 2 other short surahs from the Holy Quran. Alhamdulillah, I have done that. I have memorized and learned how to pray in Arabic, and learned the translation of it also. It took me many years to touch Quran in Arabic language. Translation was easier to read, to understand, to cherish...... but only 2 years ago, I made a major step in trying to read Quran in the Arabic language. Today, I can read Quran (1st grade level) only thanks to Allah (subhanna wa ta'ala) who gave me courage to try and succeed in this task, even when I never thought that it would be possible. First I got the Holy Quran with transliteration and tried to read it while learning the Arabic letters. That has worked very well, but after 2 ayahs I was drained from energy. Reading a whole page like that took me 1 hour at least. Masha Allah I have tried it. Secondly I used CD and reading ayah, by ayah in Arabic (following the speaker) was the best way for me Masha Allah. I have tried to read Quran every day for at least 5 min. Sometimes I would read 60 ayahs/day, sometimes only 10, but Alhamdu Lillah I have complated reading my recitation in Arabic over some time. The best time to read like that is eather after Fajr prayer (when you are not tired yet), or anytime after prayers (even if it's only for 2-3 min.) Before you know it insha Allah you would fishing Quran, and be so satisfied with your accomplishment. Therefore, new Muslims, or Muslims, who don't know arabic language, small reading per day goes a long way, and on top of that Allah will reward you double for you trying to read in Quran, even if you are making mistakes. Another recommendation is to learn one word of Quran (with meaning) per day. Insha Allah within a year, you would have know 365 words from the Quran. And that would become an easy way to recognize the words while reading Holy Quran and wanting to learn more Insha Allah. So, if you are a Muslim like myself, who struggles while reading Quran in arabic langauge, don't stop trying and Allah will reward you for your efforts many times more Insha Allah.

I'm here because i have so many questions regarding Islam, it all seems to be hitting me quite unexpectadly and out of the blue. I've previously been an agnostic and...well without boring people over the last few days, the warmth, and overwhelming pull i've been feeling toward Islam has been quite suprising. Bear in mind there are no Muslims in my family, no reasons as to why now i should be feeling this warm pull toward god as opposed to any other point in my life, and religions of any kind have never touched me. In fact, at the point of my life now is when it would seem, for want of a better word inconvienient to change my life. I don't understand it. For no reason it seems...i feel a pull and a warmth. It's all i've been thinking off the past three days and i need to speak to other Muslims...that's why i'm here. My girlfriend thinks i'm a loon whenever i mention Islam "why do you keep reading about this all of a sudden" my answer to her is...i don't know. I'm currently looking around the Islam forums on the internet hoping to find those who can help me more. One question i had was regarding what to possibly do next and another was reading the quaran in Arabic, the above posts you two have provided will be real helpful to me as i'm looking for places/schools (around Luton area would be ideal, found nothing at the University) to learn arabic for possibly reading the Quran in the future. Thank you.

1) The Islaamic Belief : Allaah is the Only Truth

Allaah (subhaanahuwata'ala) says in the Qur’aan –

"That is because Allaah - He is the Truth and it is He who gives life to the dead" (Qur’aan, Chapter 22, Verse 6)

Wrong Belief : the Imam of the order who said: "I am the Truth (al-Haqq)

The statement 'I am the Truth' - is a clear example of Shirk (association) in the aspect of the Names and Attributes of Allaah, Since Al-Haqq in the definite form, is one of Allaah's Unique attributes and is not shared by any created being or thing unless preceded by the prefix 'Abd meaning "Slave of" or "Servant of".

2) The Islaamic Belief : None Shares With The Command of Allaah

Allaah (Subhaanahuwata'ala) says in the Qur’aan –

"Verily, His (Allaah's) Command, When He Intends a Thing, is only that he says to it, "Be ! And it is!" - (Qur’aan, Chapter 36, Verse 82).

Also in another place in the Qur’aan, Allaah Says –

“They have no Protector other than Him (Allaah); Nor does He Share His Command With any person Whatsoever" - (Qur’aan, Chapter 18, Verse 26)

Wrong belief: Sheikh Shares with The Command of Allaah

The clear example of Shirk (association) in the aspect of the Lordship of Allaah, Since the Islaamic principle of the Lordship of Allaah States that no created being can share in God's attributes and Infinite Qualities, and any attempt to give the divine attributes to creation is referred to as Shirk (association), the antithesis of Tawheed (Singling out Allaah Alone for Worship)

3) The Islaamic Belief : None Could Attain The Rank of the Prophets or their Companions

The Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) has said in a well known Hadith that
"The Best of People are those living in my generation, and then those who will follow them, and then those who will follow the latter..." (Saheeh Bukhaaree,Vol 5,Hadith # 3, Arabic-English Translation)

Wrong belief: Certain people could attain a Rank higher than the Prophets and their Companions

The deviant claim of attaining the Rank which the Prophet's could not is a major deception as any Muslim with even the basic knowledge of Islaam will confirm, as regards the Companions (May Allaah be pleased with them all) The Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) in a hadith narrated by Anas bin Maalik (Radhiallaahu Anhu) said -

"After me, you will see others given preference to you, so be patient till you meet me." (Saheeh Bukhaaree,Vol 5, Hadith # 137, Arabic - English Trans)

He (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) also said in reference to his Companions ( May Allaah be pleased with them all)

"For by Him in Whose hand is my soul, If you were to spend the like of uhud or of the mountains in gold, You would not reach their actions." ( Saheeh Bukhaaree )

4) The Islaamic Belief : Allaah is above the Heavens

Allaah (Subhaanahuwata'ala) says in the Qur’aan -

“ Do you feel secure, that He (Allaah), who is above the Heavens, will not cause the Earth to sink with you " ( Qur’aan, Chapter 67, Verse 16 ).

And in a long Hadith found in Saheeh Muslim, it is narrated that the Companion Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam (Radhiallaahu Anhu) Slapped his servant girl who used to tend his sheep, and as a result went to the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) and asked what should be done as an atonement for having slapped her.The Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: "Bring her to me" so Mu'awiyah brought her to the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam), the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) then asked her “Where is Allaah?” and she replied “Above the Sky” then the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) asked her “Who am I?” and she replied “You are Allaah's Messenger” so the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Free her, for verily she is a true believer.” (Saheeh Muslim, Vol 1, Hadith # 1094 - Eng Trans)

Wrong belief: Allaah is Everywhere

The concept of Allaah being everywhere is not Islaamic as the above Qur’aanic Aayaah and the Authentic hadith confirm, Indeed if Allaah was everywhere then there would have been no need for the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) to go up through the seven skies on the night of Mi'raaj to meet Allaah, he would have been in the direct presence of Allaah on the earth in his very own house.

5) The Islaamic Belief : None has the knowledge of the Last day except Allaah.

Allaah (Subhaanahuwata'ala) says in the Qur’aan -

"Verily the knowledge of the hour is with Allaah (alone)." (Qur’aan, Chapter 31, Verse 34)

"Say None in the heavens and the earth knows the Unseen except Allaah." ( Qur’aan, Chapter 27, Verse 65

And according to the well known Hadith, where Angel Jibreel (Alaihis Salaam) came in the guise of a man, we quote the part of the hadith that is relevant to our matter, after asking about Islaam, Imaan and Ihsaan, Angel Jibreel (Alaihis Salaam) asks Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) "then tell me about the Hour (Meaning the last day)", the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied "The One Questioned about it knows no better than the Questioner." (Saheeh Muslim, Vol 1, Hadith # 4, English Translation)

Wrong belief: Sheikh Has the Knowledge of the Last day.

6) The Islaamic Belief : Believers and Disbelievers are not equal.

Allaah (Subhaanahuwata'ala) says in the Qur’aan -

"The likeness of the two parties (Disbelievers and Believers) is as the blind and the deaf and the seer and the hearer. Are they equal when compared ? Will you not then take heed?" ( Qur’aan, Chapter 11, Verse 24 )

Wrong belief: Believers and Disbelievers are Equal

7) The Islaamic Belief : No Intermediary between Allaah and Man.

Allaah (Subhaanahuwata'ala) says in the Qur’aan -

"And your Lord said : Invoke Me, I will respond to your Invocation." (Qur’aan, Chapter 40, Verse 60)

And, in another place,

"And When My Servants ask you (O Muhammad) concerning me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them in Knowledge), I respond to the Invocations of the supplicant when he calls on me." (Qur’aan, Chapter 2, Verse 186)

Wrong belief: Sheikh is Intermediary between Allaah and Man.

8) The Islaamic Belief : No Spokesman Between Allaah and Man on the Day of Judgement.

Adi bin Hatim (Radhiallaahu Anhu) reported that Allaah's Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said,
"There is none of you but his Lord will certainly talk with him without any Spokesman between him and his Lord." ( Sunan Ibn I Maajah, Vol 1, Hadith # 185, Arabic - Eng Trans ).

Wrong belief: Sheikh will be a Spokesman Between man and Allaah on the Day of Judgment. ; [“When a person takes Bayyath from Sheikh, Sheikh will be with that person, even until he reaches in front of Allaah Almighty will Sheikh be with him, When Allaah Almighty questions this person Sheikh shall answer all questions instead of him.”]

9) The Islaamic Belief : For anything to happen It is Only what Allaah alone wills

Once a companion of the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) concluded his statement to the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) with the phrase "It is what Allaah wills and you will?" The Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) Immedietly corrected him saying - "Are you making me an equal to Allaah? Say: It is what Allaah alone wills." (Collected by Ahmad)

Wrong belief: It is what Allaah and the Saint wills.

10) The Islaamic Belief : Allaah is in Charge of Creation.

Allaah (Subhaanahuwata'ala) says in the Qur’aan -

"And Allaah is a Wakil (Disposer of affairs, guardian e.t.c) over all things" (Qur’aan, Chapter 11, Verse 12)

And, in another place, Allaah (Subhaanahuwata'ala) says:

"He (Allaah) arranges (every) affair from the heavens to the earth." (Qur’aan, Chapter 32, Verse 4)

Wrong belief: Sheikh is in charge of Creation. ; [“Every thing that you know of is under the spiritual control of the Sultan ul Awliya, He is the one who is in charge of all mankind in this universe, he is also in charge of all the world of Jinns and Angels.”]

11) The Islaamic Belief : None Can Change a Bad Situation except Allaah.

Allaah (Subhaanahuwata'ala) says in the Qur’aan -

"And If Allaah touches you with harm, None can remove it but He..." (Qur’aan, Chapter 6, Verse 17)

Wrong belief: Sheikh can change a Bad Situation. [“If a bad situation is to come to a mureed of his, Sheikh has the power to change it”].

12) The Islaamic Belief : None can make anyone enter Paradise or save from Hell, Except Allaah.

The Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said in an authentic Hadith -

"O People of Quraysh, Secure deliverance from Allaah (by doing good deeds) I can not help you at all against Allaah, O sons of Abdul-Muttalib, I can not help you at all against Allaah; O (my uncle) Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib, O (my Aunt) Safeeyah, I can not help you at all against Allaah; O Faatimah, daughter of Muhammad, ask me whatever you like, but I have nothing which can help you against Allaah." - ( Saheeh Muslim, Vol 1, Hadith # 402, English Trans ).

Wrong belief: Sheikh can make one enter Paradise and save one from Hell. [“Sheikh will not allow any of his Mureeds [students] to enter Hell,................Sheikh shall make all his followers to enter into this Paradise.”]

13) The Islaamic Belief : The Angel of Death will take the soul of the dying.

Allaah (Subhaanahuwata'ala) says in the Qur’aan -

" Say the Angel of Death, who is set over you, will take your souls, then you shall be brought to your Lord." ( Qur’aan, Chapter 32, Verse 11 )

Wrong belief: Sheikh will take the soul of the dying.

14) The Islaamic Belief : No Hidden Knowledge in Islaam, Everything is given in the Qur’aan and Sunnah.

The Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said in an authentic Hadith -

"I have not left Anything which Allaah ordered you with, except that I have ordered you with it, nor Anything that Allaah forbade you, except that I forbade you from it." ( Saheeh - Al Baihaqee 7 :76, Arabic )

Wrong belief: Sheikh has hidden Knowledge. [“Vast amounts of hidden knowledge have been communicated to his Mureeds by Sheikh in this manner, Questions by these mureeds regarding day to day life, or questions relating to religion and also many other subjects have been answered by Sheikh, when this type of communication has been granted to a mureed, he no longer needs to resort to books in order to further his knowledge.”]

15) The Islaamic Belief : When Allaah Loves a Person......

The Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said as Narrated by Abu Huraira (Radhiallaahu Anhu) that:

"...Allaah said... the most beloved things with which my slave comes nearer to Me, is with what I have enjoined upon him, and my slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (praying or doing extra deeds besides what is obligatory) till I love him, so I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips..." (Saheeh Bukhaaree, Vol 8, Hadith 509, Arabic - English Trans)

Wrong belief: Directly contradicts the above hadith. [ “Certain of the mureeds of Sheikh experience that Sheikh appears within them, when this happens, they are no longer conscious of themselves as themselves, they lose their Identity and are conscious of themselves as their Sheikh, They see through Sheikh's eyes when they look, they hear through Sheikh's ears when they hear, and they speak Sheikh's words when they speak...”' ]

Wrong Belief : Sheikh can be in any place at the same time.: [Sheikh can also be present in his shape and body in several places at the same time; Sometimes, mureeds have been transported to other countries and places]

Conclusion

" Allaah's Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) drew a line with his hand and said, 'This is the Straight path of Allaah' he then drew lines to its right and to its left and said, 'These are the other paths, Which represent misguidance and that at the head of each path sat a devil inviting people to it (path), He then recited "And Verily, This is My Straight Path, So Follow It, And Follow Not (other) Paths, For They Will Seperate You Away From His Path - Qur’aan, Chapter 6, Verse 153, ( Collected in Mishkaat ul Maasabih, Vol 1, Hadith # 166, Arabic English Translation and reported by Ahmad, Nasaai & Daarimi )

The path of truth is to stick to the Book of Allaah and to the Sunnah of His Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) as occurs in the following Hadith, The Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said,
" I Have left you with two things, as long as you hold to them, you will never go astray, they are the Book of Allaah and My Sunnah " (Collected by Imaam Maalik (Rahimahullah) in his Muwatta, The Book of Decree, 46/ Hadith # 3, Page 434, English Translation )

We ask Allaah, to give all of us the Towfeek to recognize the truth, to understand it, to implement it and to call to it.
