Salaam
I have heard that you have to keep the Qur'an on the highest shelf in the room to show respect for it above all other books, but other people have told me thats not true.
Where does that come from tho? and is it ok to have it lower down if it makes it easier to access it w/o having to climb up 2 get it down? & I've got a small Qur'an n I just keep that one on the table next 2 my bed cuz then I can read it at night...is that ok?
I was just wondering about this, so does anyone know? :)
a similar question was answered a few months ago....

in your hands, head, heart and actions
the pages should be worn from use
As thekid said, there was a thread on this subject, but I can't seem to locate it. From what I read, and Allah knows best, you're just not supposed to place anything over the Quran out of respect. That doesn't mean that you can keep it on the floor with nothing over it. You can place it in your book shelf/table (for easy access) or simply on your desk, if you have one. If you're travelling, keep it in a nice clean pocket in your bag or in the glove compartment of your car, again, with it being on the top of any papers you might store in there.

I have both the Quran and the Bible and I keep both of them on the second highest shelf of my book shelf, among all the other books. This may be an important question for Muslims, but for someone like myself (agnostic) all books are more or less alike.

Where you keep the Quran it doesnt matter as long as the place is clean. Beware of people giving you cultural dogma that has nothing to do with the Deen.

If you feel convicted to do something out of reverence, I say do it. At my church, sometimes we stand when the Bible is read, sometimes we don't. We sometimes we take communion, sometimes we don't. I fear that a symbol of reverence done regularly will become ritualistic and then its significance will be lost. I think that God values our intentions much more than the outcome. If we revere his word, and putting it on a high shelf reminds us of the place it has in our life, fine. If standing when scripture is read reminds us of its special place in our life, fine. But realize that these are just symbolic, outward expressions of what is always the state of our heart. And don't think that if someone sets a piece of paper on top of their Bible/Qu'ran they are sinning. That sort of legalism is completely missing the point.
I don't even think your holy book has to be kept in a clean place. More on that in "Son of Smearer."
Hey Frank, don't take this the wrong way or anything, but you're not a Muslim scholar/interpreter to say, "I don't even think your holy book has to be kept in a clean place." According to the sunnah (tradition) of the Prophet (pbuh), the Quran has to be kept in a clean place and nothing should be placed over it. There's a difference between disagreeing with Islamic beliefs and giving your opinion on a belief without any references (islamic) for evidence to support your statements.

Sorry for the confusion. Please realize that I have no understanding of Islamic standards of worship, reverence, and the like. I meant that "I don't think the Bible has to be kept in a clean place." I was just offering a counter perspective. See how I stick my foot in my mouth when I venture outside of Comparative? Please forgive me. If someone wants to delete my post, I'll gladly redo it in Comparative.
Lol, that's okay, you explained yourself, so now I understand :)

This is where "Son of Smearer" originated (http://www.ummah.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20662)
It's referring to this controversial :) thread (http://www.ummah.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19020).
I bet I'm the first to put a smilie in the middle of a link.
