Question:

Is there any prohibition on sleeping without clothes on, even if one
is with one's wife?
Please note that I do not mean during intercourse, rather I mean when
going to sleep. May Allaah reward you with good.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

The `awrah must be covered in all circumstances except when
necessary, such as when bathing, having intercourse, relieving
oneself, etc. But when there is no reason, the `awrah must be
covered, because of the report narrated by Bahz ibn Hakeem from his
father, from his grandfather, who said: "O Messenger of Allaah, what
should we do about our `awrahs?" He said, "Guard you `awrah except
from your wives and those whom your right hand possesses
(concubines)." He asked, "What about when a man is with another man?"
He said, "If you can manage not to let anyone see it, then do that."
He asked, "What if one of us is alone?' He said, "Allaah is more
deserving that you should feel shy before Him." (Narrated by al-
Tirmidhi, 2769, and others).

Based on the above, it is not permissible for you to sleep with no
clothes on that would cover your `awrah, whether you are sleeping
with or without your wife. Rather it is permissible for you to
uncover your `awrah only at times of necessity. And Allaah knows best.

1. Sleep in a state of taharah (purity).

Ibn Abbas reported that Allaah's Messenger said: “Purify these bodies and Allaah will purify you, for there is no slave who goes to sleep in a state of purity but an Angel spends the night with him, and every time he turns over, [the Angel] says, 'O Allah! Forgive Your slave, for he went to bed in a state of purity.'” [Reported by at-Tabaranee. See Saheeh al-Jamee (3831)]

2. Sleep early.

Sleeping early is a healthy habit and it was the practice of Allaah's Messenger to sleep directly after performing the Isha prayer. Abu Barzah al-Aslami said that the Prophet used to prefer to delay Isha, and he did not like to sleep before it or talk after it.” [Saheeh al-Bukharee]

3. Choose a suitable bed.

Excessive luxurious or soft bed provokes laziness and makes one sleep more and become negligent. Aa'ishah narrates that the pillow of the Prophet on which he slept at night was made of leather stuffed with palm fibers.”
[Abu Dawood and Musnad Ahmad. Saheeh al-Jamee (4714)]

4. Clean the bed and lie on the right side.

Abu Hurayrah reported: The Prophet said: “When any one of you goes to bed, let him clear his bed by hitting it with his garment, for he does not know what may have come onto it. Then let him lie down on his right side…” [Saheeh al-Bukharee and Saheeh Muslim]

5. Reciting the Adhkaar (supplications) mentioned in the Sunnah before sleeping.

There are a number of Adhkaar prescribed in the Sunnah before going to bed, amongst them are reciting the last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah Verse 285 and Verse 286], reciting Surah Al-Falaq, Surah An-Nas and Surah Al-Ikhlas , blow in the palms and wipe as much of the body possible, starting from the head, face and then the front of the body doing it three times. [Saheeh al-Bukharee and Saheeh Muslim]

Ali Ibn Abi Talib reported that when the Prophet's daughter, Fatima came to him and asked him for a servant, he said to her and Ali: “Shall I not teach you something that will be better for you than a servant? When you go to bed, say 'SubhanAllah' thirty-three times, 'Al-hamdulillah' thirty-three times, and
'Allahu Akbar' thirty-four times. This is better for you than a servant.” [Saheeh al-Bukharee and Saheeh Muslim]

Q.) Someone suggested that sleeping while facing qibla is not an authentic sunnah. I want your opinion regarding this [Talha Khan]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A.) This suggestion is wrong. Baraa bin Aazib radiyallahu anhu reports that when Rasul alaihis salaam used to go to his bed he used to sleep on his right side and read... (Riyaadus Saaliheen pg. 356, Chapter no. 123 regarding the etiquette of sleeping and lying down). Refer to Tafseer Qurtubi under verse 29 in Surah Al-Mutaffifeen and also in Nasai, Kitaabut Tahaarah, Chapter on when a man touches his wife without passion.

When Nabi alaihis salaam used to perform salat at home, due to the smallness of his room, he used to touch the foot of Aisha radiyallu anha to signal her to lift her feet so he would be able to make sajdah.

From the second hadith we come to know that Nabi used to sleep parallel to the wall facing qiblah because when he used to go in sajdah he had to signal Aisha radiyallahu anha to lift her feet because she was sleeping along the wall facing qiblah.

From the first hadith we learn that Nabi alaihis salaam used to sleep on his right hand side.

After putting both ahadith together we realize that Nabi used to sleep on his right side facing the qiblah. And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

You cannot be serious? The Quran actually tells how people should sleep? If so does every Muslim interpret their religion that way? This is the first time I ever heard about this particular view point, and I have some friends who are Muslim.

If this is true, what do you do when you fall asleep and your body moves in whatever position it feels comfortable in?

We are advised the various things *before* going to sleep.

Sleep early so we may wake for the morning prayer with ease.
Wipe down the bed (to remove bugs).
Sleep in a clean state incase our soul is taken whilst we sleep.
And again recite the duas before falling asleep incase that night we shall be taken to our grave.

What we do in the night, whether it be turn to our left, say bad words, have wet dreams we are not answerable for.

What is above is the correct and best manner in retiring to bed, not actually orders of how to sleep. (did you read it even?)

Our Creator knows when we sleep we know not what we are doing.

I heard that if you do wudu before you go to sleep its like being in worship all night, which is another reason why you should make sure you have wudu every night b4 you go to bed :D
and another good thing is to say shahada before you fall asleep incase you die when your asleep
then if you wake up in the morning you should say :
alhamdulillahi aladhy ahiyaana ba'ada ma amaatana wa ilayhi annushoor

in all seriousness

the next time a post of islamic ettiquette is posted and some najis kafir has a snide remark to make, he will be reading the posts as a guest

asking a question is normal and considered proper ettiquette

snide remarks are rude and obnoxious

Long story short... someone just simply told me that sleeping opposing the qilba is prohibited...

As far as I know, this sleeping etiquettes is just a good recommendation to people. This thing is not obligatory, it just shows us the proper way to sleep that will benefit us the most.

Its all up to the individual... Besides, who is bamboozling enough to reject good things?

Thats why I argue with that person about this matter... It's not a must, just a good way... It's not a sin if we didnt to it, but we will be rewarded if we do it...

What a beautiful deed it is!

SO, what do ya guys think?

I fall asleep on my left side reading as my right hand holds a book open to lull me to sleep.

Sometimes during the night I switch sides, sleeping on my right side and holding the book open with my left hand, which is very difficult since I am right-handed.

This is a lifetime habit that I cannot believe Allah would be any more interested in than you are, as you read this.

rajii becareful with your disparaging remarks

the companions would cup his water from wudu and wipe it all overthemselves

abu bakr was being stung by a scorpion, and was in so much pain he cried, but he dare not moved, for the messenger of Allah was sleeping on his leg

when abu bakr was beat, half to death, when he awoke from his injuries, the first person he asked was about the messenger of Allah

the companions had a saying, may my mother and father be sacrificed for you

there is much love for the prophet from the believers, and they would ask the prophet many things and try their hardest to emulate his every deed

sleeping was one
going to the bathroom was another
eating with the right hand was one
making dua before entering your wife is another
entering the bathroom with the left foot is another

there are many

dont be so cynical

No disrespect is intended...that behavior is inspiring, but not a necessary part of Islam, is it?

going to the bathroom was another

I thought you and others told me earlier what simplicity was in the belief of Islam.

And yet the more I read, the more complicated you and others make it all seem.

Sorry about my cynicism, it came with me to Islam.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was used to sleep immediately after ‘Isha Salat, after having some Zikr. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) never liked to remain awake after ‘Isha, with out any sound reason, for falling asleep lately reduces the chances to wake up at Tahajud and even at Fajr. Following are the steps and Zikr, which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was used to perform prior to falling asleep, after ‘Isha.

[list=1] Making use of Siwaak and then performing Wudu with the content of the heart. Performing Wudu before sleeping gives pleasure effects to health and make it ease to enter in sleep.

Reciting Surah As-Sajda (32th Chapter) and Surah Al-Mulk (67th Chapter). He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) informed that these Surahs will keep its reciter safe from the fire of Ka’bahr (grave). (Mishqat)

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was used to recite the last three Surahs of the Qur'aan, every morning and every evening. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was used to recite each Surah three times and then blow out from mouth to his hands and then wipe his hands on face and body, as possible. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) informed that by doing so, one remains safe from magic, evil eye and bad effects of health from Allah. Hence, this Zikr is very important and provides many benefits (safety from magic, evil eye and bad effects of health) and we should perform this Zikr once every morning and every evening. (Mishqat)

Surah Al-Ikhlas (112th Chapter)

Surah Al-Falaq (113th Chapter)

Surah An-Nas (114th Chapter)

He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was used to offer Tasbhe i.e. to say 33 times "Subhan-Allah" (i.e. Allah is pure[?] "I think its Glory be to Allah"), 33 times "Alhamdulilah" (Praise or Thanks to Allah) and 34 Times "Allah-u-Akbar" (i.e. Allah is greatest). It becomes total 100 Times and it has heavy reward. (Mishqat)

He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was used to recite Ayaat-ul-Kursee (i.e. 255th verse of 2nd Sura). By doing so, Allah appoint an angel to protect him or her from Shaytaan (during sleep) till Fajr. (Mishqat)

Finally, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was used to offer the following Zikr to enter in sleep and was used to lay towards right side by keeping right hand under his face. Turing towards right side to sleep and keeping the right hand under face avoids pressure on heart and provides easy sleep and in this form, it's very easy to get up early in the morning. (Mishqat)

( باسمك اللهم أموت وأحيا )

"bis'mika Allah hu'ma amu'tu wa ah'ya."

"In the name of Allah, O God, I die (fall asleep) and wake up."

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded that if any one of us saw a bad dream and if they get up from sleep, he or she should read Aouzbillah(...) three times and should blow out from mouth to their hearts and should change the side of sleeping and ask Allah to safe them. And if some one saw good dream, he or she should make Du’a to Allah that same may happened. Moreover, remember, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade to tell every one about one’s dreams either that dream was good or bad.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was used to offer the following Zikr, while awaking from sleep, in order to have good start, after coming out of sleep. (Mishqat)

( ÇáÍãÏ ááå ÇáÐí ÃÍíÇäÇ ÈÚÏ ãÇ ÃãÇÊäÇ æÅáíå Çáäト )

"Alhamdulilah hil lazi ah'yana; baa'da ama'tana; wa alay'heen nu'soor. "

Volume 1, Book 4, Number 247:
Narrated Al-Bara 'bin 'Azib:

The Prophet said to me, "Whenever you go to bed perform ablution like that for the prayer, lie or your right side and say, "Allahumma aslamtu wajhi ilaika, wa fauwadtu amri ilaika, wa alja'tu Zahri ilaika raghbatan wa rahbatan ilaika. La Malja' wa la manja minka illa ilaika. Allahumma amantu bikitabika-l-ladhi anzalta wa bina-biyika-l ladhi arsalta" (O Allah! I surrender to You and entrust all my affairs to You and depend upon You for Your Blessings both with hope and fear of You. There is no fleeing from You, and there is no place of protection and safety except with You O Allah! I believe in Your Book (the Qur'an) which You have revealed and in Your Prophet (Muhammad) whom You have sent). Then if you die on that very night, you will die with faith (i.e. or the religion of Islam). Let the aforesaid words be your last utterance (before sleep)." I repeated it before the Prophet and when I reached "Allahumma amantu bikitabika-l-ladhi anzalta (O Allah I believe in Your Book which You have revealed)." I said, "Wa-rasulika (and your Apostle)." The Prophet said, "No, (but say): 'Wanabiyika-l-ladhi arsalta (Your Prophet whom You have sent), instead."

The Etiquettes of the Bed

(Excerpts from The Master’s Thesis “Rulings on Marriage Life” by Zayneb Hasan)

Translated by Memphis Da’wah Team

>

Mentioning Allah’s name: From the Sunnah of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) is to mention Allah’s name before sex. Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet said: “If one of you wishes to come to his wife (i.e. have sex) say ‘Bismillah, O Allah keep the devil away from us and keep the devil away from what you have blessed us with’. If Allah decrees for them a child Satan will never harm him.1 ÌäøÈäÇÇáÔíØÇä æ ÌäøÈ ÇáÔíØÇä ãÇ ÑÒÞÊäÇ Çááåã ÈÓã Çááå

Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) and Ataa’a (May Allah be pleased with him) explained Allah’s statement ( æ ÞÏøãæÇ áÃäÝÓßã )2 “ and send before you for your ownselves” by saying it means let “bismillah” precede sexual intercourse.3

It is mustahab to be covered and it is makruh to remove all covering and be nude. The Prophet said: “ If someone comes to his wife let him cover and not get naked like the nakedness of two camels”.4 And A’isha said: “ I never looked or I never saw the Prophet’s (Peace and blessings be upon him) genitals ever”5

It is makruh for a man to kiss his wife or touch his wife sexually while front of people or with a sound that is heard by people or another wife because it is despicable.

It is makruh to face the qiblah (direction of the ka’bah) during sex out of honor for the qiblah.

It is mustahab to engage in foreplay before the actual act of sexual intercourse.

It is makruh for a man to discontinue sex before his wife has reached sexual satisfaction.

It is mustahab to make wudo after sex before sleeping. Narrated Ibn Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Oh Messenger of Allah : Is okay for one of us to lay down (i.e., sleep) while he is junab (in sexual defilement)? He (Peace and blessings be upon him) said: “ yes if he makes wudo”6

It is from good manners and decency for the wife to offer the husband a cloth or tissue to clean himself.

From the etiquettes of sex is that it is preferred the woman to be not above the man rather the man above her. This is because it is abnormal and fysically less suitable.

It is forbidden for the husband and wife to share what happens sexually between each other with other people. The Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed from the most evil of mankind with Allah in status on the Day Of Judgment is a man who is intimate in private with his wife then he spreads the bedroom secrets.”
