I'm an avid reader of the aha! books of logical puzzles, questions, etc. and this particular question caught my attention. again, post answers in the answers thread.

In the tower of the medieval church there are two priceless old bellropes. They pass through small holes in a high celing. The the two holes are 25 centimeteres are apart and just big enough to allow the ropes through.

Tony is an acrobat who became a thief. He wants to steal as much of both ropes as he can by cutting them with a knife.

Tony thinks to himself: How shall i do it? I can't get to the room above because the door is triple locked.

Tony <again:>: I'll have to climb the ropes and cut them as high as i can. But the ceiling is so high that if I cut them off one-third of the way up i can't drop to the floor without breaking my legs.

Tony thought about it a long time before he hit on a way to get almost all of both ropes. what would you do if you were he?
