When ignorance in the face of learning flaunts
When in boldness sinners the pious taunt
When youth before the aged have no shame
and still to itself attributes no blame.
When you follow your mind but not your mentor
When you obey your heart but not your lover
When you pride yourself over your wealth
and forget to thank the bestower of your health.
When the sunnah you smartly shun
and of its lovers you make jest and fun
when in your faulty judgement and tainted eyes
his noble companions you critisize.
When you fame and fortune seek
and haughtily override the meek
When you aspire to posts unfit
and meddle in matters ill equipped.
When in slyness you your deception hide
And in politeness you disguise your pride.
When you your crooked fancy ideas propogate
and in your foibles others you implicate
When your cures for the world prescribe
but are helpless to your children chide
When you resolutions pass and speechs make
but for the daily prayer you are unable to wake.
Then please call not yourself a muslim
Contradict not so the demand of Iman
please sully not such a noble name
to its founders at least show this much shame.
Hold,hold,cause no more harm
To your ugly sores try to apply some balm
As for your journey after this
Do not vainly hope for eternal bliss.
(an interesting poem from an old copy of the 'the advice' quarterly islamic journal.)
