View Full Version : Wisdom: Age vs Experience
:salams
What do you believe makes a person wise, is it their age or their experiences? If you believe it is the latter, can you honestly say that you have given the opinion of someone younger than you the same consideration that you would give that of an older person?
Dangit I forgot the flaymin' poll. Just discuss it then :o

Hmm interesting. It depends say a ten year old lives years through a war he/she then has the experiance of war and would be less foolish in that situation. However the older you get you could just instinctly know from other experiances to know what to do. It's quite an interesting question there.

Experience comes with age.

Yes but then wouldn't that mean you're attributing it to experience? For example the part I emboldened, you're putting that down to them utilising the knowledge from a previous experience.

See that's what I was thinking, but it's interesting to hear other people's opinions on the matter, might learn something to change your way of thinking

Also it depends what you mean by experience. An old villages spends all his life in a village wouldnt know much
By experience I mean having either gone through a situation already or having knowledge on a similar experience. It's pretty open.
Does anybody instinctually know what to do in a situation? And if they did wouldn't that instinct be avaible at any age? Otherwise once again it comes from experience.

classic nature vs nurture, some 'instincts' are the result of experience, so ultimately it all does boil down to experience. Age, on average and trivially, is one of the best 'gauges' of experience. So I'm afraid I don't quite understand your thread.
The question is, does wisdom come through age and experience. On the whole, I'd say yes. Older people are less rash, think longer term, and have less of the 'hormonal' stuff raging through them => wiser
I see the point about dodi though...I wouldn't quiet put it like that , but always puzzles me she does

:wswrwb: experience undoubtedly, age makes no difference, u can find wisdom and knowledge in the speech of children who have suffered, and nothing but foolish ramblings from an older person who doesn't know what its like to physically fight for their life, who doesn't know what its like to go hungry for days and who doesn't know what it means to live in poverty, with untold cruelty from their fellow man.

My teacher used to say that when young your brain opens up like a flower in the morning and when old it closes like a flower in the evening.
Just play your role here and hopefully we will meet in hereafter

I'm wondering if anybody out there sees a clear distinction.

Hugh Hefner being the exception.
We've been 'fortunate' enough to have this program screening the last few weeks: "Girls of the Playboy Mansion". Gotta love American TV...
Older, saggier, virtually no elasticity in that horribly gaunt face and yet he's still 'active'. Ugh, just makes me shudder. Sorry about the mental picture folks. I'm hoping one day all that peroxide causes some major chemical imbalance in one of his girlfriend's heads and she clubs him to death in a moment of rage. Now that would make for good TV viewing.

Between age and experience? I definitely do. They're two separate things.
Keep in mind elders may be a bit out of touch with the society around them.

I definitely don't, I think the boundaries are so fuzzy to be almost indistinguishable. One of my favourite quotes about wisdom is: (I like to define wisdom using it, even though I'm sure he didn't intend it as such)
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
by Niebuhr, an American theologian, and frankly that only comes with age and experience, it's virtually impossible to disentangle the two (I'd say, the wise are nearly always old, but the old are not always wise).
Hugh Hefner being the exception.

hehe, switch the American trash off, surely the Queen still sends the BBC to her colonies?

A good example of wisdom is not bringing up member's names in threads they have not posted in.
Experience and age taught me that fact.

What do you believe makes a person wise
Path 1: knowledge -> understanding -> Wisdom
Path 2: observing one's self. Gaining knowledge, Realising mistakes, understanding of others, doing small things, connection to the divine.
What matters is the Natural ability, parental love and training, personal or other's Experiences, age doesn't count so much.

None.
Knowledge & Wisdom are the two honours bestowed by ALLAH SUBHANA WA TAALA on the good on his/her maturity, so says QURANUL MAJID.(12:22)
There is a very rare wisdom that dawns on a good soul once he/she attains the age of forty. A very obvious fact but always overlooked in the absence of the glorious will of Almighty The Great.(46:15)
Age indeed seems to be a relevant factor as to handle/deal with true wisdom maturity is of a prime requirement. Nevertheless, as in the case of Haz. ISSA (SAW) a rare case can be cited where as a baby in cradle HE (SAW) could handle such a rare gift, AlhumduLILLAAH.
The wisest thing for us to do is to accept the truth irrespective of the age it is coming from, INSHA-ALLAH (SWT).

Agree
Also a person does have a major personality change after every 7 years period of his/her life.
