View Full Version : Can you criticize your own culture or you receive that as an attack?

All societies have negative traits that even Islam couldn't even out.

1. Do you try to hide those negative in your culture?

2. Do you try to fight these negative sides of your culture?

3. Which negative traits? There is nothing bad about your culture since it is yours and from your ancestors.

who are you to accuse me of lying?

because every single culture, except one that is fully islamic, has a host of negative things in it...which is why I added that conditional "If"

The other day I was telling my mum that a lot of cultural practices in the world are a pile of crap and should be thrown in the bin like rubbish. Not only are they not from Islam but the amount of difficulty and problem they can cause is really quite disturbing not to mention sickening.

There are a lot of negatives in my culture that I proudly speak up against but in saying that there also just as many good qualities.

If the principles of Islam were fully implemented and followed it would be a great culture. :hidban:

Perfect culture is a mater of opinion. Some say Islam is the perfect culture.. well maybe for them it is. However, there are a few billion people who disagree with Islam being the perfect culture.

In some people's eyes, small town America might be a perfect culture...
For some, Japan might have the perfect culture...
etc. etc.,

It is all a matter of opinon.

The last people in past twenty years to say such things were people like Milosevic and Karadzic.

Hmm..

Well in my culture, when celebrating people go out into the street and shoot guns into the air... sometimes live, great...

I laugh at Iraqis all the time :p especially the ones called the "im3aydis" which are basically like, borat-style iraqis lol, get amazed at seeing something that has existed since the 80s...

I always criticise my own culture and I dont receive it as an attack but more like an observation that I have made due to my life expereinces. Cultural answers to problems are deemed as being unsatisfactory, which is why I prefer islamic solutions as it uses a more proactive approach to tackle certain issues. E.g Free-mixing amongst relations.

You are being harsh on your own culture but then who else can? :) rather be harsh on self than others.

In every culture there are bound to be a few practices or beliefs which are contradictory to Islam. There is nothing wrong in criticizing and avoiding these.

Yes matter of opinion and Islam is not a culture but I know what you mean (the islamic way of life).

Tribalism is pretty huge in my culture. FGM is also practiced in some parts. That being said, there are good qualities too.

Actually tribalism is everywhere in Europe (in the Balkans) in Africa (worst around the lakes) In Asia (subcontinent) etc.

Lol, culture gets such a bad rep here. :smack: Indeed it is true that it’s okay to criticize one’s culture but holy hell if somebody else tries to. Problem is that it usually takes somebody else form another culture or seen another cultures (in this case, it’s us who were born and raised in the west) to recognize it wrongs or abnormalities because those who are in it see it as the ‘norm.’ :)

As far as i'm aware there's nothing -ive about my culture. i wouldn't criticize it nd I wouldn't let others either.
If i respect other people's way of life nd traditions i'd want the same respect back. it works both ways.
