As-Salam-O-Laikum,
Is it true that if a male has not shaved his pubic hair or hair for 40 days then his prayers (i.e. salat) is not accepted?
im pretty sure that applies to both men and women - for not just pubic but also under arm hair.

As far as i'm aware, there is truth in what you have written. Inshallah, it won't be long until a brother will respond to this thread with a backing quote. Jazakullah for being patient. ;)

Just be careful where you splash on the aftershave!
I havent heard of that before....? Is there any strong hadith on this?
What did they do in the old days when women didnt have razor blades or scissors? Hmmmm.

:start: - In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
It is a Sunnah to remove the pubic hair and hair under the armpits for the purposes of general hygiene and cleanliness.
"…Truly, Allah loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves (by taking a bath and cleaning and washing thoroughly their private parts, bodies, for their prayers etc.)." (Al Baqarah: 222)
Hair in such areas is considered unwanted. It is makruh to let them grow for more than forty days, ie sinful, but the prayer is NOT invalidated.
Anas reported: A time limit has been prescribed for us for clipping the moustache, cutting the nails, plucking hair under the armpits, shaving the pubes, that it should not be neglected far more than forty nights. (Sahih Muslim, Book #002, Hadith #0497)
...and Allah knows best.

The Prophet Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said;
Five practices are characteristic of the fitra (the natural state, or tradition of the prophets): circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, cutting the moustache short, clipping the nails, and removing the hair of the armpits.
[Sahih al-Bukhari]
I hope it answers your question.

This sentence does not make sense to me "Hair in such areas is considered unwanted. It is makruh to let them grow for more than forty days, ie sinful, but the prayer is NOT invalidated."
Makruh means disliked. If something is sinful, it is haram. If you commit haram, you commit a sin. So how can something disliked/makruh be sinful?

my bad I shouldn't have summarised like that, allow me to clarify.
Taken from SunniPath,
"The validity of prayer is not affected by the state of one's armpit hair. However, the sunna is to shave or trim one's private bodily hair once a week; it is not disliked up to two weeks; after this, it is somewhat disliked and blameworthy to delay this (because it is contrary to the sunna of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)); and it becomes sinful to delay shaving or trimming one's private bodily hair beyond 40 days"
- It becomes sinful when you deliberataly delay, after 40 days, with knowledge of what you are doing.
