:wswrwb: well we only have a choice of M&S , or "checkers" (all owned by M&S ) safeway which changed hands to "morrisons" i think ( and its filthy in there looks like they never wash the floors or clean it :o and mouldy fruit and veg and spillages on the floor every time i have been in there its lethal ) or the co-op ..so i stick with the co-op for a few reasons, they deal in fair trade goods, their prices are up to 30% lower than the other mentioned supermarkets on many items , they dont deal in unethical companies and they give u 4p back for every pound u spend, and 8p back for every pound u spend on tuesdays and wednesdays, which u collect at the end of the year.

local shops are better, round here we have got mainly turkish ones. their milk, eggs etc is nearly half the price of morrisons  & fruit n vegs are better from market than morrisons aswell (both price and taste..)
but if i do go supermarket it is morrisons because that is the one which is nearby or else i order it online from tesco
(btw our morrisons is not actually disgusting like what asiya described, otherwise i wont go!)

No, they're usually in good condition, they're never wilted. If i see that they're even slightly wilted, I don't buy them. They last almost a week, sometimes longer.
Asda, I noticed always have wilted roses at full price.

Other...none, except Aldi are in the US (that I am aware of). While I may ocassionally shop there at Aldi, it is not my primary grocery store. Mine would be Jewel Foods.

18-05-08, 09:15 PM
Believe it or not ASDA are also in the USA. It's just that you know it as WalMart ;)
I usually buy stuff like bread, cereal, rice, pasta, lavatory paper, cheese, fish, margarine, tinned and frozen veg and various other items from Aldi. Milk and some vegetarian stuff I get from the Pak (can I say that?) supermarket down the road, and eggs from the little cornershop near Al Falah (except when I want to buy them with my debit card... in which case, Aldi again).

Clubcard points you can get some good deals when you convert them for 4 times their nominal value
I get most of my shopping from Asda, mango and organic drinks from Tesco, spagettii from Lido oh and my halal meat from our local paki shop, so i guess you could say i shop around alittle.

I get the basics (milk, bread, fruit juice, cereal) from tescos.
I try and get the rest from the turkish shops,
the fruit and veg are always tasty (but don't last that long). Supermarket fruit and veg are tasteless. They have been specifically chosen to last longer and look better, at the expense of taste.
cold meat.
I get a bulk of organic halal chickens from yasir halim on green lanes, and then freeze them.
and i get my new zeeland lamb legs from costco's

well here in da u.s we gotta store called aldi's and its retarded... u gotta pay 25cents for the cart, and i forget how much for each BAG...they so stupid...plus its so tiny...
now the best ones here are like giant eagle, acme, mayb wal- mart, k-mart,...y'kno.
Muhammad2
19-05-08, 05:41 PM
Sister. You are aware you can get the 25¢ back after you've finished with the trolley, right?
It's a hire charge. Not a tax.
The Aldi here in Leicester is quite a nice size :D

25 cents only? We have to pay a pound, but of course you get it back after! Doesn't make the whole store seem cheap, makes the people that shop there seem dodgy, they wouldn't hafta protect them like that if it wasn't for people stealing them :p
And aren't american local shops HUGE? I once walked into a shop local to my hotel and it was flaymin massive! Granted, it was on broadway but I thought it was a local and hence supposed to be small? Unless fairway is a large american chain?

wherever they have offers on :o so basically all of them at some point! We usually get told to bring home certain stuff if we're passing one of the shops on our way.

20-05-08, 09:58 AM
paying for the trolley is normal, u have to do it in all the supermarkets.. not aware of any where u cant, because then people take it and mess around with the trolleys, dump them in river and things like that? and 25 cents is cheaper for that anyway its less than 15p, even if they didnt give it back then big deal :S
lidl and some places u have to pay for carrier bag, it doesnt make the store seem expensive, those places are usually the cheaper places which do that bc the price of carrier bag etc not included in their product like wholesalers will do it aswell... plus if they encourage ppl in using less bags it helps environment
they just started doing that in all the supermarkets here anna, even the co-op 5p per normal thin type carrier bag, and 15p for a slightly thicker reusable one, the supermarkets claim this is to help "the environment" which would be fine if they were giving all the money to charity.. but it all goes straight into their profits.. so now u have to go shopping armed with half a dozen bags on u, its such a pain cos if u just go out to do something else, then end up going shopping on the way back it adds more to ur bill, and we have a stupid new tax here now just came in this month, "goods and services tax" so we have to pay an extra 3% on absolutely anything we buy now, lol even the pound shop became the £1.03p shop :p

I don't think Sister Asiya lives in the EU.
lol..is that on top of VAT? or instead of VAT?
oh no we dont have any VAT here :D alhamdulillah never had it, and if we buy goods from the uk online etc, then they have to remove the VAT off them and theres not much tax on earnings either, i think for a single person youre allowed to earn £13,000 before u pay any tax at all, and for a married couple the allowance is more than that about £20,000 ( alhamdulillah here if ur married they dont expect the woman to be working so the man gets more allowance for his wife masha Allah ) although were part of the uk we have our own laws and government and economy and even bank notes.

3% is like a bargain..here its 17.5%..ad in some europe countires its 20%
they tax you on what you earn..and they tax you on what u spend
lol i guess it is a bargain then at 3% but the whole island is in uproar against the politicians about it, because it will effect the poorer families by taxing them on basic necessities like food and clothing, so were all saying they should have just put a 1p tax on every millionaires pound here ( this pace is full of multi millionaires with offshore accounts cos they keep it all here so the UK gov, cant tax their cash) then it would have more than covered the deficit the government claimed they had to make up for, but seeing as 8 out of the 11 government ministers are multi millionaires that wasnt likely

Wa Alaikum wa Assalam,
Icelands primarily then the local Asian/ halaal green grocers.
Reason: Convenience as they're local to us and are not listed as those that aid the Israeli occupiers.
I don't know about where you are sis asiya, but here they're considering a government mandated 10/15p price for a plastic bag. I think it's an excellent idea...in Ireland the same thing made plastic bag consumption vanish overnight (well, not quite, but close).

yes its a good idea, but not if the supermarkets are the ones picking up the profits because ppl will still use them, but pay for them... ok some ppl might bother to bring their own. but like here a lot of ppl can afford to just pay each time . to them 5-15p is nothing, and so what the supermarket used to provide for free will now be an extra bonus for them. so i think it should be made compulsory that all the money goes to charity for the bags, instead of in the supermarkets coffers because theyre already charging way over the odds for basic necessities

Sadly ukhtee, that is how many of these "green" campaigns are going...right into the companies' pockets.

Yes, I can see why it's a problem in Jersey...all those fat cats who're their to evade UK tax don't care do they?
InshaAllah when they bring the legislation here the money will have to go to cleaning up the environment - which is actually worth it.
What also happens when the government mandates a price is that people start using cartons/boxes/reusable bags and the supermarkets end up not making much - what they do make goes to cleaning the place up.

Costco's New Zealand lamb is halal!?
all new zeeland lamb in the uk is halal.
The vast majority of new zeeland lamb is sold in the middle east, and so around 10 years ago, they decided to turn all the abbotoirs into halal abbotoirs.
I have personally contacted the uk representative of new zeeland lamb , and various uk halal monitoring organisations, to confirm it.
If you ask any halal butchers in the uk, they will tell you the lamb from new zeeland is halal, (this is what they buy)
but just in case there is any doubt, the pack of 2 new zeeland lamb legs has halal written all over it.

Sainsburys too because its closest and Mom likes it.
Hmm, my shop is not in there... well I could go to Netto, it being Scandinavian as it was pointed out earlier, but I prefer another shop here with a name that always makes my English speaking friends giggle. They do carry some halal meats such as minced lamb or beef, frozen, we get lamb from an Arabic shop though. As for other things mentioned in this thread:
Tax/VAT here is usually 25%, less on foodstuffs though but I can't remember the exact figure. 6% on books and newspapers.
We have paid for bags for a long time and I hope it encourages people to recycle. I bring a shopping trolley if you know the kind I mean with me from home.
We also "pay" for trolleys/carts and the money is of course returned. I use a plastic coin so I don't have to remember to have change with me at all times. Having worked in a grocery shop I have to say it's rather necessary as those trolleys are quite expensive and people tend to just take off with them, dump them in the river or such. Amazing how a coin, worth less than 50p, can make so many decide to not demolish the thing but return it instead! Then again, people in my hometown are well known for being cheap...
