this may sound like a stupid question but when you do istikhara, the instructions are that you sleep facing qibla that night. What exactly does that mean? Does it mean, the top of your head should be facing qibla or does it mean you should sleep horizontally on your side so the whole of your body is facing qibla?

yes one should sleep one ones right hand side body facing qiblah
in the sunnah position ..right hand under right cheek, knees slightly bent and left hand on left thigh.for some time.
sunnah for normal sleeping
of course we can move even after a few seconds ..
What has Istikhara got to do with the way you sleep. I have not heard of that.
If you want in-depth details of Istikhara, buy the book "Dua, Weopon of the Believer". by Abu Ammaar Yasir Qadhi.
