View Full Version : My parents are buying a dog for the house
So yeah, as the title suggests, my family is preparing to have a dog within the year. I know Islamically that dogs are haraam, so......I'm not really sure what to do.
Would it be okay if I kept the dog out of my room? Because that's where I keep my Qu'ran and where I pray and everything.

Wolf Im sure the only way it would be halaal would be if you were to keep it in the garden, make it a nice doghouse and look after it well,
I've always wanted one but when I found out its haraam to keep it in the house.. I thought forget it,
Im 100% sure you cannot keep it in your house, regardless of if it is outside your room, angels also do not visit the house where a dog resides :coolbro:

Dude, the puppies in the picture are about to cry because you said that. :torture:
But yeah, I know angels won't enter a house with a dog. Therefore, my room is sort of my house. Eh?

:salams Dogs are also nijaas too, so having them around in the house would be a burden seeing as how dogs get very excited easily and jump around (and can subsequently lick you).

Ahmad are these the very puppies your parents are planning to buy? Black dogs (completely black) are shayateen as mentioned in a hadith of Prophet :saw:
Also:
The Prophet :saw: has said that the black dog interrupts the prayer and he gave the reason for that that it is a devil. Ibn Taymiyyah (RAH) said, “The black dog is the devil of the dogs. And the jinn often take its form. Similarly, they take the form of a black cat. [Excerpt from, "The World of Jinns and Devils" page 40/262 by Dr 'Umar Sulaiman al Ashqar (hafidhahuLlah)]

Akhee Wolfn, I can give you some tips, since like you, my parents are non-Muslims and adopted a dog from the Humane Society several years ago.
1. Do not wear socks inside the house as much as you can, since you can occasionally step into slobber, or, in the case of puppies who need to be house-trained, urine or feces.
2. Train the dogs/puppies not to jump up on you or lick you, therefore minimizing the risk of them doing so, insha'Allaah.
3. Have a pot of earth in the kitchen (if you can swing it, or someone else near a sink), in the case that you get some dog saliva or your hands.
4. Be sure to always set aside a set of 'praying clothes' in your closet in the case that some dog saliva gets on your current ones one day and you don't have the time to wash them.
5. Be friendly to the dogs, do not tease them, and do not hurt them. (see the hadith about the Israeli prostitute and her giving a dog water to drink)
6. Dog hair is not unclean, therefore it is okay if you get some on your clothes. However, keep the dog(s) out of your room or their hair will get everywhere (you don't want that, trust me).
7. If dog saliva gets on your clothes, you need to simply wash them in the washing machine. If you touch their noses by accident, simply wet down that area yourself (you don't need to use earth or whatever). The washing 7 times rule is for when dog saliva gets on food 'vessels' (which, depending on interpretation, could include the hands).
8. If dog saliva gets on any part of your body, simply wash it off properly, but there is no need to repeat your wudhu if you already have it.
I have gotten the last 2 of these answers from 'ulema and I thought I would list them here to save you some time and worry. Insha'Allaah, everything will be fine. I suggest you also help your parents feed, clean, and walk the dogs as it would lift some burden from their shoulders and will earn you 'ajr insha'Allaah.
Edit: The hadith in brother Sulaiman's post above means that the dog is COMPLETELY black, including its eyes, mouth, paws, underbelly, etc. Most black dogs are not absolutely completely black. However, if a completely black does cross your path during salah, then you need to repeat it (and it's a jinn).

this is a problem i too have faced. i reverted a few weeks back, and i have 4 dogs! i have had them since i was non muslim and can not just simply give them away or let them live on the streets.
i am making sure their saliva does not get on me. when i play fetch with the dogs, i put on rubber gloves(lol) so the saliva will not get on me. i only play fetch with them outside now days.
i still love my dogs and pet them and all that. i just dont get saliva on me.
and i do not allow them in my room. absolutely not.
that was what my imam advised me to do since i am a revert. he said that after these dogs, i should not get anymore. which is harddd for an animal lover like me!

Asalamalikum.
As far as I am aware it's not just the saliva it's also the dog hairs. So everytime you touch the dog or sit down and get dog hair on your clothes you need to change your clothes and wash your hands
I have been told the following - dogs should only be kept as work animals and are not permitted to enter private dwellings. It is haram to keep them as companion animals.
If a dog does enter a building (and even when it leaves if it's hairs remain inside) then the angels wont enter which can obviously cause problems in the home environment because Jin will still be able to get in
Every time you touch a dog you must wash your hands. Dog hairs also cause depression as well as being impure so every time you get hairs on your clothes you must wash them and change into fresh garments.

Do you have a valid reference that dog hair is haram? I only know of the hadith that dog saliva is haram.
Ukhtee, the rule of thumb in fiqh is that everything is halaal except for what Allaah Ta 'Ala has declared to be haram due to these ayaat:
:start:
He it is Who created for you all that is on earth. Then He Istawā (rose over) towards the heaven and made them seven heavens and He is the All-Knower of everything. (Al-Baqarah 2:29)
O you who believe! Fulfill (your) obligations. Lawful to you (for food) are all the beasts of cattle except that which will be announced to you (herein), game (also) being unlawful when you assume Ihrām for Hajj or 'Umrah (pilgrimage). Verily, Allāh commands that which He wills. (Al-Ma'idah 5:1)
O you who believe! Violate not the sanctity of the Symbols of Allāh, nor of the Sacred Month, nor of the animals brought for sacrifice, nor the garlanded people or animals, etc. [Marked by the garlands on their necks made from the outer part of the tree*stems (of Makkah) for their security], nor the people coming to the Sacred House (Makkah), seeking the bounty and good pleasure of their Lord. But when you finish the Ihrām (of Hajj or 'Umrah), you may hunt, and let not the hatred of some people in (once) stopping you from Al*Masjid*al*Harām (at Makkah) lead you to transgression (and hostility on your part). Help you one another in Al*Birr and At*Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allāh. Verily, Allāh is Severe in punishment. (Al-Ma'idah 5:2)
Forbidden to you (for food) are: Al-Maytatah (the dead animals - cattle-beast not slaughtered), blood, the flesh of swine, and the meat of that which has been slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allāh, or has been slaughtered for idols, etc., or on which Allāh's Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering, and that which has been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by the goring of horns - and that which has been (partly) eaten by a wild animal - unless you are able to slaughter it (before its death) * and that which is sacrificed (slaughtered) on An*Nusub (stone altars). (Forbidden) also is to use arrows seeking luck or decision, (all) that is Fisqun (disobedience of Allāh and sin). This day, those who disbelieved have given up all hope of your religion, so fear them not, but fear Me. This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islām as your religion. But as for him who is forced by severe hunger, with no inclination to sin (such can eat these above-mentioned meats), then surely, Allāh is Oft*Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Al-Ma'idah 5:3)
Allaah Ta 'Ala first says that everything He Created in this dunya is halaal for us, and then in Surah al-Ma'idah, He goes on to Say except for those He things He has Made haram. Therefore, it is incumbent on those who say something is haram to bring proof of the validity of their statement.

Labs are great family animals too, loyal, loving, some are protective, others are just big teddy bears, but they take several years to outgrow their puppyhood. Hide your shoes and remote controls. My friend's Golden Lab, Nell ate the book "Divine Canine: The Monks' Way to a Happy, Obedient Dog" by Monks of New Skete..... before the lessons could be absorbed.... :(

If they get the dog (Despite you disagreeing) then yeh atleast keep it away from your room iA. and only the dogs saliva is impure. Dogs are not shayateen ...some shayateen take the FORM of black dogs.
umm, all 100% black dogs are shaytan, no exception.
While 100% black cats can sometimes be a jinn(though I don't know if they can only be evil jinns= shaytan, or just any jinn, good or bad) , but not all completely black cats.
That was what one of my shaikhs said many years ago when I asked him about it, though I don't know why I didn't ask him for the evidence about the black cat, maybe someone can do a search on it.
I remember one time seeing a completely black cat, at night sitting a close distance to me while I was doing something in the garden, looking at me, so I was wondering if it was a jinn.
Because cats usually would run away from you if it doesn't know you, and not sit close to you.
It was a little freaky at night.
