I was best advised to continue this ramadhan. BUT to modify your workout, so you do not dehydrate your body before time of iftaar.

Before last Ramadhaan, I was alll working out proper and good and then I stopped... :o and I've stopped since. :p But I do exercise of course, just not the work outs as I did before.
Ramadhaan really weakens me, I get really tired and everything. :(

Ukhtee, while I haven't been on it much recently, I am on a strength training forum where they had a sticky (last fall) about working out during Ramadhan. It wasn't stickied anymore, so I will dig it up and post a link for you...if you would like. I am interested in looking at it myself as I am wondering what people do while fasting, ie: workout very early, workout after Maghrib, etc.???

although some people would argue that month of ramadhan shouldnt be wasted etc. but as the youth u cant really expect us to be praying 24/7 can you? esp. if ure energetic and more of an active person ;)

I train as regular as possible and inshaAllah will try to continue.
during the fasting period, I suggest you try keeping the fatty stuff to a minimum as possible, cos you actually dont need to train to lose weight...a GOOD diet will do the trick. Really.
In the past I have done running (either before closing the fast or a few hours after opening it), boxing, weights.
If you dont go to a gym, thats fine, a decent pair of running trainners and a 30 minute run a few times a week with a set of press ups and sit ups will defnetly make a diffrence.
If you want some advice on diet / training then let me know, will be happy to help, inshaAllah.

I remember jogging during ramadan in middle of the day lol.
The best way to do it is around 1,2 to 3 hours before you break your fast. When you break the fast, use something hot or room temperature. Cold food/drink will get you fatigued, training or not.
Gym training is easier to do during ramadan.
Alternatively, you can train after magrib for an hour and continue your daily routine. But you may not have to do that depending on time interval between magrib and Isha and that's depends on the country you live in and the way the local mosque do stuff(tarawi ...)

Yes being healthy feels great but for some reason i don't follow my routine during ramadan.
Anyways hope everything is well with you, see you in the urdu thread :D

fasting gives u every reason 2 hit the gym. cuz when u fast ur body goes into a starvation mode, hence u use less energy than u wud on a normal day! so u hang on to ur fat much greedier:o. big no no rite. n if like me u have an entire feast wen breaking ur fast u really need to excersise if u dnt wanna gain weight. best time i find is straight after salatul fajr. one of ma brothers goes with me for a long walk, and takes me to the gym afterwards. look for a gym in ur area that opens early.

yeh but if you workout after fajr, wont you work off the food you just ate and then what will help you survive through the day?
I think going gym during Ramadhan should be avoided, or if you go do weights only and none of the cardiovascular exercises.

yes but you cant eat and then start exercising, by the time you have given the meal about an hour or two to digest, it will probably be 9pm/10pm and i would be shattered at that time to even do a work out

Ok, I went through the thread and picked out 6 decent posts. Please remember, so of these posts are from bodybuilders, so take what info is useful to you. I numbered them in the order I found them, but did number them to show differnt posts.
1. Asalamu alaikum wa rahmutallahi wa barakatuhu,
Brothers and sisters,
As you know, Ramadan is right around the corner. I'm excited about it. I don't know what it is about that month, but I always welcome it. It is a time for us to strengthen our hearts and minds. Inshaallah we shall try to keep our bodies strong as well throughout this great month.
My question to you all (and non-Muslims feel free to post) what tips do you have for trying to keep size/strength during this month?
Here are a few that I recommend:
-Don't go all out on the first meal. Make it a small one so you can eat others that same night.
-Fill up a gallon of water and constantly sip it after aftoor. Make sure it is empty before you fast the next day.
-Drink a large casein shake with milk before sunrise.
Any other suggestions?
Jazakum Allahu Khairen
2. -Avoid doing anything too physical during the day. If you're a student or have an office job this is very helpful.
-Avoid the hot sun, as it can make you feel weak and drained.
-Get a good meal in at "sahoor", the pre dawn meal..
3. It better to stick to the basic and do what the prophet does. I really think that the casein stuff is abit expensive and wast of money because you body takes what it want naturally.
Start with dates and milk first and then go to pray eat before you sleep is better than eating after you wake up for suhur

If so, just eat like crazy when you are allowed.
actully people eat less, because they are hunger but eat pretty quick so they get full up pretty fast
In Ramadan it is not only food but you have to do more things.
4. During the final 10 days of Ramadan, stop working out and worrying about your diet altogether. Focus entirely on worshipping.
5. Try to work out in the morning, after a good pre-dawn meal.
Try not to miss taraweeh congregational prayer in the evening just to work out
If you can handle it, work out before sunset then break your fast.
6. Usually working out in the morning keeps you energized most of the day. You might want to slip in a nap some time before asr prayer though.
I try to sleep some time between Midnight and 1 AM and wake up with enough time to eat a huge suhoor meal before dawn.

Salam all!
Ok, so this is the first time I'm in a "serious" workout/training plan, which involves a lot of Kms of running... and I'm just wondering how I'll cope during Ramadan...
(the plan in my head is to cut out the Cardio workout, and only keep up with my weight training... haha! yes, lazy me.. :p)
Is anyone else in the same situation? has been? How did you manage to keep up with your fitness program during Ramadan? There must be some trick out there.... ;)
Thanks!
M.

im not too big on gyms. i work out at home with treadmill and aerobic DVDs. i rarely workout during ramadan. but this ramadan im planning to make sure i at least exercise 30 minutes 4 times a week.
it's difficult exercising during ramadan because after a long day of fasting im generally tired. then me and my family usually go to tarwee salat. so im too beat when i come home from the majid

walaikumu salaam wr wb,
i will still train during ramadan but probably not as often and as hard (probably three times a week). i was thinking of doing my cardio before fajr.. and the rest after taraweeh salaah. subhan'Allah i will be so exhausted. just so nothing effects my ramadan i have also booked the last ten days off work and study. im just worried about my sleep and water intake. usually if im not drinking plenty of water i tend to get these dark circles around my eyes. how horrid.

the best thing i wasted my money on. its so convenient to have some sort of work out machine at home.. you can work out any time.
we actually get tired due to the sort of food we eat, if your eating and drinking right... you should be more energetic.

Usually people who go to the gym a lot, like my self, build up a fast metabolism. So what i have been doing for the past month is slowing it down, but fasting Mondays and Thursdays and also have slowed down/altered my routines. I used to eat about 6-8 small meals in a day, but now I only eat about 3 meals a day, breakfast lunch and dinner. The first Monday that I fasted about a month ago, I almost died!! It was exhausting! but now its getting easier and I still go to the gym :) Besides I go to the gym very late since my gym opens late, so I can even after Taraweeh insha'ALlah :D , if its too big of hassle, i'll just stop going period.

ok, I've read through people's comments, and I think I'll try working out just before Iftar. I usually go to the gym right after work, so I guess I can keep doing that and then just go home and enjoy my Iftar. I'm pretty sure the weights training won't be a problem, I'm just "scared" of the cardio part... :p

It can be done. A good thing to do would be to have some cottage cheese or casein protein (slower release than other protein supplements) before you go to sleep. During ramadan your body can spend a lot of time in a catabolic state (even though it is good at adapting as the month goes on) so sleep is a good time to help it recover.
Other than that, a nice high carb, lowGI and high protein diet in the morning used to work best.
When you say gym are you referring to aerobic or anaerobic activity?
PS. I used to play games of hockey whilst on my fast; they used to finish at around 1pm - the next 4 hours were the most painful and excrutiating imaginable. Thank goodness for winter fasts.

I would've imagined the best time t workout is right before magreb, as in say, an hour or half an hour before for a quick cardio workout, as this speeds up the metabolism - then all that food digests quicker.
After Fatoor/iftar, wait until after salaatul Tarawee7 and do another workout - avoid too much carbs especially during iftar which makes us very tired (which won't help your khushoo during tarawee7!) - stock up on water and fruit and insha'allah you should be able to work out until its time for bed! Giving yourself a good sleep till Sa7oor :)
