View Full Version : Need help - Of Mice and Men - English Exam
Asselamu Aleikum brothers and sisters
On Friday I will have my English exam. By the way Iam not living in England/USA. I took the english course as foreign language.
Well the topic of the exam will be the book "Of Mice and Men" written by John Steinbeck. In the exam we will watch accessorily the movie to it. The teacher said he will show us only the first scene. And he said that we will get tasks in which we have to describe what function has the music.
And my biggest problem is that I mostly do not know how to start my sentences when I have got to describe some situations.
I want to ask you wheter you can help me and give me some good formulations which could be quite helpfull for my exam.
I heard also that courses in England or USA got the same topic in the 11th grade. Maybe one of you wrote an exam to it, too. Or do somebody knows a good page where describtions are how to describe some situations in movies?
I hope you can help me Inshaallah
Yeah, I read the book and read the movie.
Ya akhi, I have read it as well. I'm confused in how you need assistance with starting your descriptive answers though. Could you elaborate?
My main problem is that I dont know which words I should use to describe some situations.
For example.. The music has the function that it wants to create an excited atmosphere.. or something like that.
I need such formulations and good words which I could use in the exam, you know what I mean?

Kind of Akhi, I will try to help as much as possible but forming sentences is on a case by case basis.
Instead of 'The music has the function'
It would be better 'The function of the music in (explain the situation you are asked to describe) is' [eg The function of the music after Lennie kills George is to express the mourning of George for his brother]
Describing words are kind of a complicated thing in English, are you allowed to have a thesaurus at your desk while taking the exam?
Edit: This website may help if you need assistance understanding the BOOK

It will not help with the movie though.
Thank you brother. Iam allowed to use a dictionary but what is a Thesaurus?

A thesaurus is like a reference book to give you different words that mean the same thing. Here is an example
http://thesaurus.reference.com/
Type a word into the top and it should give you other words that mean the same thing. It often helps when you are stuck with little words, and helps you expand to more meaningful and more intelligent words. I would definitely recommend that you bring in a dictionary and a thesaurus. Insha'Allah akhi you'll do fine, your english is very good subhanAllah.
Thank you brother but Im sure it could be better. Iam always doing little mistakes.
That is a very nice thing but I suppose that we aint allowed to use a thesaurus.
Can you give me a list of intelligent words? I hope Iam not causing you too much trouble. Iam sorry akhi :(
For example other good words for "express"

Sure, let me dig down and see what I can find.
Express:
announce, declare, enunciate, proclaim, describe, communicate, convey, put across
I would use enunciate, proclaim, and communicate. BTW I am grabbing a long list from a website and then filtering out the ones that don't make sense. Its all situational though brother. Can I help you any further?
Also, why are you sorry? Don't be sorry... Maybe someday I will need your help with a language that you speak :)

:salams akhee Said.
I would also use the word 'convey' as all fictional books and music in films can be interpretative. Also, you could say that this passage in the book, or this piece of music in that scene signifies this theme, or that moral, or creates an atmosphere which indicates whatever, etc, etc. In particular relation to music, certain passages are usually designed by the composer or sound editor to evoke certain feelings, or create a certain mood, or highlight a certain conflict within a particular character or action; 'evoke' is a good word to remember. You should also be aware that in popular American films, composers create certain musical themes to identify with either a specific character, sequence, or narrative theme. You may be asked to identify one; I have never seen the movie "Of Mice and Men" (I have only read the novel), therefore, I don't know if it contains any of things I mentioned above.
Aside from that, I would like to advise you akhee to try your best to avoid courses that contain music, in the future, insha'Allaah. I know how hard is to try and discern what a course will exactly contain during its duration, but music is indeed a fitna and not to be enjoyed.
I hope this helps you insha'Allaah. May Allaah Ta 'Ala let you pass your exam.
Thank you sister. Your posting is very helpful for me
By the way you are right sister but I have got no opportunity, I alreday deselected the music course but I fear there may be no way around.
Well, I will write my exam tomorrow. I wrote these as exercise. Can you give me a feedback wether I wrote everything right? Damn, Iam such tired
At the beginning of the movie the viewer sees a woman who is scared of something and runs away while she screams loud. A part of her dress is disrupted. The director used a long shot and medium shot. The camera pans to left and right follows the running woman though. The function is to evoke tension and to express anxiety.
The piece of music in the scene where George and Lennie are running away from those peoples who follows them creates an atmosphere which indicates that both are feared of getting catched and probably getting killed.
Who is the crying lady that is running over a field?
This lady runs away because Lennie touched her dress to feel the cloth. That has happened in Weeds. She thought Lennie is a pervert due to his mild mentional disability.
By the way http://www.meelu.com/video/347-Of_Mice_and_Men_1992.html that is the link to the movie. I suppose you can also watch other films on that page.

Said, I've tried to edit this piece and I've used red to highlight the changes I've made - I've cut out words, edited them, and replaced them. Have a look, and hopefully you will do well tomorrow :insha:

Oh sorry, a mistake yet :smack::D
Ahm, actually I meant disrupted. Something is disrupted. Is it wrong?

I told you I was being picky! Disrupted is fine, but it is usually more appropriate for an event . eg 'the party was disrupted'. Disturbed is more appropriate. But the ultimate choice is up to you
