Well I am starting to see a sign of what is called a cold sore on my lip. After doing research it says that this is Herpes, my heart is racing, right now because I don't know where I got it. I don't understand... am I a bad person. what are the Islamic ruling about this if any?

Brother/Sister calm down. Yes cold sores are herpes, but it's different from genital herpes. If you looked up Herpes in wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herpes_simplex_virus), it says "Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) are two species of the herpes virus family, Herpesviridae, which cause infections in humans.[1] Eight members of herpesviridae infect humans to cause a variety of illnesses including cold sores, chickenpox or varicella, shingles or herpes zoster (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and various cancers, and can cause brain inflammation (encephalitis). All viruses in the herpes family produce life-long infections."

So there are different forms of herpes, this is just one version of it. Just get it treated and it will go away inshallah.

Only you know if you've done something wrong. If you know you haven't, a cold sore isn't a guarantor that you have.

You can catch the herpes virus that gives you a cold sore from anywhere, not necessarily anything 'dodgy'. In fact, you can catch it in a crowded environment or a packed train or a class room.

HSV-1: the cause of a cold sore isn't the same as HSV-2 which is the cause of the STD Genital Herpes.

herpes does not mean what you think it means.

There are many strains of the herpes virus in circulation. Even Chicken pox is caused by a type of virus called herpes zoster voster. Herpes simplex virus which causes the commeon cold sore, is transmitted very easily between people. even in the same household, sharing a towel or drkinking from the same bottle or glass as an infected family member. It's spread in the saliva and is very very contagious, just like a cold.

approx 80 percent of the population carry this form of herpes , so many many Muslims would have it in their body.

Another forum of herpes simplex virus is considered a sexually transmitted form.

Having a cold sore doesn't make you a bad person. it just means you have probably got the cold sore virus in your family and it's being shared around by common family activities ,.
If you are prone to cold sores, take the following precautions:


use high-factor sun creams to avoid sunburn
try to avoid becoming run down
eat a healthy diet, including plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

ask your pharmacist for a cold sore cream which should be applied to the skin as soon as the telltale symptoms heralding a cold sore appear (that is, localised pain, or a tingling sensation on the lip). These creams are very safe and can reduce the duration and severity of a recurrence. However, it's best not to use it in pregnancy unless the pregnant lady gets severe cold sores.
