define ages? how much data are you trying to back up? whats your upload rate?

what time have you set the back up schedule?

dunno back up rate or whatever or how much. I think I've got a fair amount to upload - the thing says it might take a few hours. Its first time Im doing it aswell.

Before I was doing back up on norton, and it was taking AGES - like an hour later and only 10% done, then I backed up on disc and it was like 10 mins for the whole thing?

so what ya reckon?

let's say you are backing up 5gb worth of data. If your upload rate on your connection is 1 Mbps then at best you can expect about 100KB of backup per second.

Which means 10 seconds for a megabyte. 10,000 seconds for a gigabyte. And 50,000 seconds (almost 14 hours) for 5 gigabytes. This is the theoretical best case.

So depending on your actual connection speed, and how much you are backing up, the first back up could take a long time. Subsequent incremental backups will of course usually be much smaller.

well hopefully it wont take too long. been loading now for a couple of hours and 95 files of 300 been done. I can pause it I assume, shut off my comp and resume later I presume?

Depends on the backup software and service you are using. But it should be able to handle a pause.

I'm trying to get online backups to work too, but I'm not having much luck

I am trying to rdiff-backup into a truecrypt file, then wput the truecrypt file onto an ftp server...

Is there are better way of doing this?

I got norton and some pc customer care thing. But both are a waste of time, it takes ages and I get frustrated. Im just gonna ditch that idea.

The nice thing about online backups is in case, God forbid, you should have a fire in your home or office.

What I do is I backup certain folders of critical documents and records online in two different locations.

But my full backups with operating system and software and all of that I do with local drives.
