As salaam alikum brothers and sisters,
Warmest greetings to our non Muslim users,
This notice is for anyone who shares a computer with another forum member or who uses a university computer suite or who has more than one account.
Due to recent incidents of account sharing, including sisters allowing brothers to use their accounts, we have had to tighten up security in this regard. Account or password sharing is not allowed at ummah dot com for the following reasons:
Many users have access to private forums. Sharing accounts or passwords compromises the security of these forums and therefore the security of everyone who uses those forums. In particular this is much worse when the user(s) involved have brothers or sisters forum access and are sharing their account with someone of the opposite gender, or who has not disclosed their gender.
If you let someone access your account, you are giving them access to your private information including your contact details in you account and your private messages which is a violation of the privacy of anyone who has private messaged you. In addition you are giving them access to your online persona which could be used for all manner of dodgy purposes or even illegal activity. We have had ummah.com members who have turned out to be Israelis pretending to be Muslim in order to defame us, Nazis pretending to be Muslims in order to spy on us or defame us in one way or another.
It should be clear then, why we do not allow password sharing. This rule has not changed. All that is changing is we are being more careful about enforcing it.
We know when people are logging on from the same computer and several users have recently been caught logging on to each others accounts, and some have found themselves and the person they allowed to access their account banned within moments of their account being accessed.
We are now being a lot more thorough in checking up on this. We are aware that there are perfectly normal and legitimate reasons for two people to be using the same computer, and as such we are asking users to notify us if they regularly use the same computer as another forum user, for whatever reason. Also please notify us if you use a college or university computer suite to log on, because there may be another ummah member at the same college/university that you are unaware of and who may inadvertantly log on from the same machine as you. Users with more than one ID, whilst we discourage this it is not against the forum rules provided the alt IDs have the same gender as each other, similarly someone may have had an old ID in the past that they don't use. All users that this applies to should also notify us.
Also in the future, if you log on to your friends computer, if they are an ummah member, please notify us. Or if two forum users get married and start using the same computer, again, please notify us. We are not interested in your private life, we simply want to avoid banning people who have a legitimate reason to share a computer.
You can notify us by private message or via helpdesk, and we ask that you don't delete this notification (a copy of the pm should be made automatically in your sent items folder) - in case we make a mistake in the future, you can bump the helpdesk thread or forward us the pm copy in your sent items folder, and inshaAllah we can rectify the mistake.
Thank you for your co-operation,
Ummah.com moderators and admins
